Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009

I got tickets to go see them in London when they anounced their original reform shows earlier this year, myself and my girlfriend are gona head over and dinally see them live. But wouldnt you know it, in typical orbital fashion, just like the final tour and every gig was their "final" gig...the reformation now is a whole festival circut and a best of album...ANOTHER best of album with no doubt the shitty 5min version of halcyon etc...

Going to see them live twice now because they were anounced for Electric Picnic too.. hope Underworld have a gig in London some time close to the Underworld gig in September... would be nice to see them both..

Still while im excited to see Orbital, its really just to say ive seen them, i cant say there are many more than 5 songs which really make me sit up and take notice..wheras underworld...well the prospect of seeing them live and experiencing what they have performed infront of me in the past...well thatd make me wet my pants

From the Loopz Orbital official site: (plus some pithy comments)
20rbital:

CD 1
CHIME (LIVE STYLE MIX) (available on the Rest EP)
BELFAST (Orbital 1; also on Work 1989-2002)
SATAN (Orbital 1)
HALCYON (TOM MIDDLETON RE-MODEL) (hmmm?)
LUSH 3 (Orbital 2; 3.1 was on Work; wonder if this is 3.1+3.2?)
IMPACT (LIVE FROM ROYAL ALBERT HALL) (was on one of the Satan EPs, i think)
ARE WE HERE (WHO ARE THEY) (that's cool; prev. on Are We Here EP)
THE BOX (In Sides; Work; yawwwwn)
NOTHING LEFT (MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING LEFT) (Nothing Left 1; also 2nd disc of The Altogether)
ONE PERFECT SUNRISE (RADIO EDIT) (Blue Album; the dreaded Edit)

CD 2
OMEN (hey, there's something from way back!)
CHOICE (Orbital 1; also on Work)
THE NAKED AND THE DEAD (Radiccio EP; nice inclusion, this!)
SAD BUT TRUE (Snivilization)
STYLE (Middle of Nowhere; also on Work)
FUNNY BREAK (ONE IS ENOUGH) (Altogether; also on Work)
THE GIRL WITH THE SUN IN HER HEAD (Insides; nice inclusion)
REMIND (LIVE FROM NEW YORK) (also on one of the Satan Eps, i think)
LUSH (HERVE’S ‘TREE AND LEAF’ REMIX) (???)
IMPACT (Orbital 2; Peel Sessions/Diversions/Work)

the little blurb promises reworked and remixed tracks - would be nice if this was a continuous mix by the Hartnolls...as it is, a few repeats from Work 1989-2002, but also a couple more rare mixes; non-singles and remixes i'm not holding my breath about, but will probably buy anyway!

It`s funny, because I went to their supposed "last (public) show" at Wire 04 in Yokohama!
I had only been in Japan for 2 months, so this was a nice welcoming gift! I remember Phil
Hartnoll taking his lights of at the end of Chime and coming out and bowing to everyone!
People in the audience were getting teary eyed and hugging each other.

It was the end of a golden era...or so I thought!

So much for stopping while you`re ahead!!!

Oh hell, I`d probably go see them again just for nostalgia!:o

I just think it's ridiculous that this release is for 'newbies to Orbital' as, we - wasn't that the point of "Work"????

aaaand - I mean... come on.

clearly this release is for nothing other than added publicity for their new live shows
and it's a bit silly to be celebrating their 20th Anniversary if they "broke up" for a few years...

Not very good. I've been told that there is very little interest from promoters here in the US to get Orbital to play live here. It really sucks cuz even before they broke up, they didn't get much respect in the US and weren't very popular, except back in 96-99 when "electronica" was the next BIG thing. Going to try to drop the word to the Ultra Music Festival promoters, maybe get them to play in 2010.

Yer, they seem to be doing everything which stinks of desperation now.

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009

I'm alright with this new best-of, "2Orbital". I mean, 5 years away is a long time, and although this is by no means indispensible or even that interesting a comp. for fans, it does serve as a "remind"er:rolleyes: for those with a passing interest in the group.

"Work 1989-2002" suggered from lousy radio edits, but did include Frenetic, which is one of my faves, even from its Kinetic roots.

The "halcyon" compilation a few years ago was a totally random, unofficial release, and had a prety poor tracklist.

With this new collection, sure there's a bunch of repeats from Work, but hey, gotta include those hits. There are a few rarer tracks to maybe attract new fans, and remixes to attract completists. Is it desperation? I dunno...maybe the brothers Hartnoll need some cash and that's why they're expanding their reunion tour and releasing this. I'd like to think it's building momentun for something new and inspired.

By the by, how many New Order "best-of"s are there? At least 4. And the Chemical Brothers released "1993-2003" and 5 yrs later added "Brotherhood". Sometimes these are at the record company's command, or a slick way to fulfill contractual requirements.

at least the Chems released NEW material between "1993-2003" and "Brotherhood"

and the bonus disc on both were quite nice

Not so keen on the remixes. Waste of 79p.....
But i am intrigued by Remind!?
Not heard this version before. Its not Live and it must be an earlier version than the Brown Album. Now i need to find the version mixed with Meat Beat Manifesto. Used to have that. Arrrggghhhhhh.....

It's the Mind the Bend the Mind mix on MBM's Mindstream single.

Can't blame them for doing what they love but I really wish they'd release some new material out of this. They ended Orbital at the right time IMO but you have to wonder if the Hartnoll brothers are afraid of vanishing into obscurity.

Yes the new release is just publicity for the tour, which is not really uncommon, but Work was a really bad attempt at representing what was great about the group (I started with that album and couldn't have imagined how great their classic albums were), and that new-ish Halycon greatest hits thing was trash. Hopefully this one turns out much better!!

yeah, this cd release seems pretty silly. at the same time, i'll check out the remixes on there and probably buy a few a la carte if it's an option...

friends who've seen the 'new' set are pretty happy...

...bbc website has 'satan' from rockness - a bit revamped - a new guitar riff here, new samples there; but lacking in punch overall. fades out just as they start 'belfast' unfortunately...

So, some friends have just cancelled on me, so I've got 2 spare tickets for the Brixton Academy gig on Friday.

If anyone is interested, PM me.

Tickets are standing, £25 each (face value).

Cheers...

Well i saw them in Electric Picnic, the set was great and had an amazing time. Hoping on a plane in the morning to see them there tomorrow night with my girlfriend.

If they blow my socks off i may see if we are interested in a second night, but i have a feeling it wil be the usual Orbital playing the exact thing every night and so i may give it a miss

Re: Orbital reform - Tour 2009

Just to say, saw them play at Brixton Academy on the 24th (Thursday Night)

They were ok, i saw them play at electric picnic and while it wasnt the longest or the most experimental show, they stuck to the point, got everyone moving and there wasnt much fiddling about.

The show in London was nearly boring at times.. although saying that they did have a few banging moments, but with every great tune they did a very long and meandering mix that didn't really do much at all for me..

Ah well, still had a great night.

They also need to sort out Halcyon, my fav song, but they have some high tones that sound like feedback and it just sounded shockin at times.

I somewhat agree with that. I saw them at Sonar earlier on in the year, and although it could have been to do with seeing them already, I didn't think the London gig was as good.

The Sonar gig got straight to the point with Lush, Impact & Remind, but with the London gig we're treated to Out There Somewhere which ambles along for 20 minutes or so before the gig seems to start properly.

Everyone did wake up when the Lush started, though and the atmosphere was great. The sound system there definitely wasn't the best - the bass was turned up to the point where it was slightly distorted and drowned everything else out...
