I bought both, 02-02-02 and phonestrap, in wav form and I am downloading them right now.
Can't wait to hear them...
Thank you Underworld for finally releasing them for us.
I hope the money goes directly in your pockets (you deserve it!) and I hope that this is only the start of many more digital releases in the near future...!

:D

damn... I think UW live went down again...

I was able to get to the part where you could listen to the streams of 020202
but then when I went to actually buy them, the screen just won't load!

Yep, t'was a smooshed server problem. It's all sorted out now, so I've downloaded and all that 020202 yayness. Pretty abstract stuff. I like the non-lyrical layered voice loops in this Phonestrap 6 Autotrader 4 thingy. Unlike Spikee, I can't really "sing" along with this one, too much going on at once!

Thanks again, holden.

I was a little surprised that the catalog numbers were different numbers for the WAV and MP3 releases, rather than being different sub-numbers.

Finally got around to buying the phonestraps and 020202s. Yes yes, more releases like this please. Even getting a piddly 38p for my Aussie peso they seem like excellent value :)

Just stumbled across the "one-and-a-half second new album bits" talk of Karl in on the old broadcasts from 2005.
"Swing up high" was the very last bit in there.
(amongst other riverrun stuff and Globe)

Haha, nice. That was the 2005-04-11 broadcast for those keeping score.

Swing Up High (Version 2) now in Audio. Thanks for asking, Jan! I think I prefer the purity of Version 1, which I've grown to rather like over the last week.

Also, Always Loved a Film (Version 4(?)). Rick, while Biro and Strumpet may hold the records for longest development time, I think ALAF takes the cake for most radical permutations over time.

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

So, I just noticed that Phonestrap 4, as posted in the digital bundle, is different from Phonestrap 4 that was originally posted on the website. The website version has recorded street noise in the background, while the digital bundle version is missing it. Version 5, on the other hand, has the street noise in both versions. 4 is the only one that seems to be substantially different from the originally posted versions.

I agree with you on this. I do like both versions, but IMO version 2 is more dancefloor material, where version 1 is more laid back and really nice to listen to at home. The posted ALAF version is very nice as well!

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

Swing Up High seems like a completly different song once some groove and bite has been put in to it. Liked the first version, but it was never going to be released in that form - i assume. Could definatly see that being dropped in various clubs and various producers having a good go at remixing it in various styles. Version 3 [if there is one] could see it be turned in to another d&b tune imo.

I wonder if we will be able to purchase Swing Up High both versions as its gorgeous!

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

I definitely prefer the old ALAF (the one we heard on the radioshows a couple years ago) to this new version. Sounds too much like Glam Bucket part 2 now. The earlier versions had this awesome bassline that gave the track a lot of groove, and they've not just removed that completely.
A case of working too long on a track maybe? Sometimes the initial ideas are the best...

dubman 11-01-2008 11:43 AM

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

i disagree

i initially wasnt a believer and sticking to the smooth'n'hard MO of the version with 'i'm a big sister' lyrics but this new iteration is really gorgeous. really all it could need at this point is a light dash of something extra, but now i see the where it's been crawling to and i finally dig it a lot.

I'm with you. Frankly, i think this track just keeps geting better. And with each version, there's some amount of resistance on my part to the change (for example, when they first added the "I'm a big sister" lyrics, i didn't care for it; the rolling bass that came with the last radio version, the staccato strings of this latest offering)...but they all grew on me pretty quickly, and this version still has the original spirit. They might be getting close to overdoing it (i'm still not sure about the strings, since they're present lmost throughout), but it's still a rockin' track.

I don't like this version of ALAF at all. I agree with King Of Snake, the bassline in the very early version was what made the song so nice.

potatobroth 11-01-2008 05:40 PM

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

i like the new version, but the VERY first is still my fave. the one in the video of Karl turning the pages of "In the Belly of Saint Paul". THAT one really grooved.

Leon 11-01-2008 05:44 PM

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

And also, the cymbals on the kickdrums are kinda ugly, I have never really understood why producers think that sounds good. But that's just my opinion :)

YES! I just watched that again last night after listening to this new version again. I'd love to see that version of the track live in video form be put up on the audio archive to show the initial version.

Could we please see that at some point?

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

i agree with Leon and KOS here too. the bassline is what made the track. have to wait and see what happens from here i guess. Globe got mangled when it appeared on Oblivion With Bells as Holding The Moth so there's a precedent for UW fiddling all the funk out of a track.

I agree with the bassline lovers... Is the bassline Silver Boots?

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

I prefer the orignal stuff heard on webcasts, but then again I guess this is the whole point of UW letting us hear progressive stuff - our opinions seem to matter which is unique for most mainstream bands. They could easily ignore us and bang a version out they feel is the best and not care what we think, so much respect for them to share the songs stages with us. Personally I think Phonestrap 1 is the best, the other versions are just remixes imo.

I agree about all of it. I thought the May 2006 broadcast version with the "Maggie is a doll and I'm a big sister" lyrics is the best yet. The newer ones aren't bad, but I love that bassline and those lyrics. Although Karl really sung his heart out at the Brighton show with the new version/new lyrics.

I love how UW releases songs like this to us their adoring fans. In stages so you can see how the song evolves. I tend to like the simpler/original versions best though. Cases in point Telematic Peel, Phonestrap, Biro the Leggy. (Although I do love Beautiful Burnout, but to me it is totally different then Biro the Leggy).

haha yeah in total agreement about Globe/Moth here man. The live versions of Globe prior to the album were allright though not remarkable, but Moth just turns into piano noodly crap halfway trough the song. :)

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

Who knows what Bamboo will end up sounding like! The first time it was ever known of was at a Boston gig I think, its been roadtested for so long now, but it could take some other form. We've heard the brilliant glitchcore version and a studio version on various webbycasts

dubman 11-03-2008 12:37 PM

Re: UWlive Audio: Now Open

personally i think we're overrating what was globe simply because many of us didnt like how it ended up as holding the moth. it was def. unfinished and needed to go somewhere, and they went where they did with it.
i agree it was probably a bit much with the noodly jazz chill that plagues the comps sections and everyone could do away with forever, but it's not nearly as bad as that and i'm even in the mood for it a lot.
