oh good.

i'm really really loving this more and more.

it's one of those falsely understated albums that sounds minimal at first blush but is written so brilliantly well that it's really just distilling the best parts and melodies into something special.

but it takes awhile to warm up to because you have to get "in" the record as it isn't aiming to blow you away from the beginning

You guys have to remember than 99% of the buying population doesn't know what the difference between 160, 192, MP3, or any other bullshit. They just know HEY IT'S ON MY IPOD.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

I'm enjoying the shared experience that the net is having with hearing this record at the same time. It feels like an event.

It's a long way from when I saw this band with 50 other people at a free show at Tower Records on the Sunset Strip on the day 'The Bends' came out. I saw "Fake Plastic Trees" on 120 Minutes, determined it was the greatest thing I'd ever heard and was surprised to discover they were playing the store two nights later.

Highlight of that evening: Radiohead playing "Creep" and Johnny's trademark distorted stab being completely silent even though he was trying to do it. He looked genuinely perplexed and never got it together the whole performance. :)

If they don't know the difference then make the 1% happy! ;)

Ranking the new albums: In Rainbows == Kid A < HTTT < Amnesiac

joethelion 10-10-2007 05:14 PM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

you know... this album really sounds very much more organic than their previous efforts (or is it just me?)

hmm... sorry - brain's a bit fried... just got out of an exam, and I was basically just in the litho studio all day before that (other than when I was cramming)

(edit)
and for me it goes
Kid A -> Ok Computer -> (bit of a gap) -> the Bends = Amnesiac -> HTTT -> Paplo Honey

it's still a bit too early for me to say where "In Rainbows" will go... probably just after Ok Computer...

Amnesiac just kinda ticks me off, b/c all of the tracks were finished as a part of Kid A. It just seemed like a "more profitable option" than anything to release two albums, instead of a double album... and the fact that Cuttooth was a b-side. Although, I think it's sort of a better album than 'the Bends' - which I've never really liked beyond the singles, but it's sort of one of those deals where the singles are soooo good, that you kinda forget that the rest of the album isn't so hot (which is sort of reminiscent of Orbital for me).

HTTT also isn't a bad album... there's just something about it, that doesn't really grab me as much

crank 10-11-2007 10:39 AM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

maybe radiohead were putting out two records to speed the inevitable exit from their record deal. One Double doesn't count as two no?

just a thought.

and i can't rank INRainbows in the pantheon of records yet... I want the whole thing (read: Both albums together). I think this record should properly be marketed as a double record as Videotape kind of leaves me dangling when i get there...

I think I'll reserve judgement when i have both together.

Radiohead would be so much cooler if I had never heard of Warp Records or Sigur Ros.

Still like it though.

House of Cards is my current favorite, but I like Weird Fishes/Arpeggi too. Bodysnatchers sounds great turned up loud.

Interview with Johnny Greewood on pitchfork today re: the album:
http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/page/n...-iin-rainbowsi

Interesting discussion of how the tracks formed/were reworked. i haven't yet heard the album (just a few of the tracks from live shows), but he says it more experimental than HTTT, more along the Amnesiac/KidA lines. Agree?

(bit off topic, but i prefer my radiohead experimental to rock. OK Computer is a classic, sure, but even on that LP, the turning point for the band, there are too many rockers that kind of sound dated to me now. Whereas, like it or hate it, Amnesiac still seems fresh.)

radiohead aren't really my cuppa tea anymore, even tho i liked kid a and some of amnesiac.

that said, in rainbows is good, much better than that hail to the thief dribble... some very nice songs here.

I've been informed by someone who's opinion I trust and respect that the sound quality if impeccable.

Sean 10-12-2007 10:46 AM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

There seems to be a bit of complaining about sound quality from some. I just downloaded my copy and haven't listened yet myself, but it sounds like the same old same old as far as the complaints go. I find the suspicion of "ulterior motives" regarding the bitrate to be somewhat unlikely given the fact that it's Radiohead we're talking about. More likely just that they're the first to try it and maybe they didn't handle it perfectly. I for one appreciate the original approach they're taking with this digital release.

It was mostly crap, but it hit the spot, and he let himself be drawn in.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

but 15 step is one of the boring songs on there next to house of cards and jigsaw.

Nude is finally done, and in a way i'm glad they waited this long, because as bad as i wanted it then, they have vastly improved on it. might be my favorite radiohead tune EVR. reckoner is this album's There There moment, except it's much better. and i could put videotape on again and again it's so friggin good.

HEY, why are the mp3s only 160kbps?

dubman 10-13-2007 01:31 PM

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

because they basically they said "mp3 will never be CD quality, so those of you holding out for all that detail wouldn't get it until the CD actually comes out."

it's pretty acceptable to me, honestly.
but i guess i proved awhile ago that my hearing isnt up to audiophile standards with the whole riverrun thing, so whatever.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

they played the whole thing tonight on a local radio station, 99x. unfortunately, i only caught the last two songs. the second to the last was a pretty good song, but the last one i didn't like at all. is the last one the worst of all or is a lot of the album kid-a bzzt beep beep murmur piano moan slit-your-wrists?

cos i don't want to buy the album yet because i might buy the download and realise i've wasted money, but if i pay too little and end up liking it, i'd feel bad.

Re: Radiohead, new album "In Rainbows" next week

Nah, they're not all in the flavour of that song ("Videotape"), in fact the general consensus among most of the forums I read is that people like that one the least. I actually have found it growing on me quite a bit, but I love the whole album to bits so that probably doesn't mean much.

I say take the risk and buy. :)

Two things:
One: Stop listening to crap radio. It's a waste of your braincells and time. Listen to 88.5 if you can stomach the kids who are "DJ'S"

Two: The solution to you feeling bad is: Buy it again if you like it. It's worth "owning".

Listened to it all the way through today and first impressions to me are that this record is a grower. Some gorgeous stuff on there but i don't know if i like all of it. Going to listen to it all day tomorrow to form a better opinion. Definate change from some of the live tracks ive seen them do live.

Anyone else buy the boxset like me?

hmm.
alright.

i do listen to 88.5, i was listening to their jazz show the other day. but 99.7 isn't all bad, they play some good stuff during the day. for example, i heard them play the smiths and depeche mode one day. and i have a soft spot for some of the 90s stuff like filter and collective soul and stuff like that.

there's a couple of new bands that aren't that bad, a little pop-oriented, but not bad. 92.9 is good, too, they play a lot of the 80s stuff and have selected stuff from the 90s and now. 97.1 would be okay if they weren't so predictable. it's like fox 97 was 10 years ago, too much lynyrd skinnard and not enough blind faith, too much eagles and not enough beatles. and they don't play any prog rock. even 92.9 plays some prog rock.

i listen to 90.1 on saturday night 'cos i love h johnson and garrison keillor. i used to listen on sunday night for 'my word' but the idiots cancelled it for more news programs. npr in atlanta has way too many talking shows and not enough music shows.

i guess that's about all the radio i listen to in atlanta.

Just came across this. It's a survey that finds only about 40% of people opted to pay for the album download. I don't think it's anything super-conclusive though when you consider that some people, like myself, opted to download it for free since I know I'll definitely buy the cd when it's released next year. I like Radiohead, but not enough to buy their album twice....
