adam 06-22-2007 04:22 PM

Re: Justice - †

You file it under the artist you primarily associate it with. What about soundtracks? By composer or movie title? I'd say title, but what about when the composer is also a pop artist - like Neil Young's Dead Man?

kid cue 06-22-2007 04:24 PM

Re: Justice - †

i'm actually going to reorganize my 12" collection by "feel"

adam 06-22-2007 04:25 PM

Re: Justice - †

I can sort my entire record collection blindfolded, feeling the grooves by touch.

BrotherLovesDub 06-22-2007 04:25 PM

Re: Justice - †

that would depend on how much of a soundtrack fan i was. if soundtracks were my thing, i would file under movie title and have them all in one section. since i'm not, i'd file Dead Man under Neil Young. generally i file Soundtracks with other Pop/Rock compilations unless it's all electronic or all reggae/dub. those go in the compilation sections under their respective genre sections.

Salvation! soundtrack is filed under New Order, btw.

BrotherLovesDub 06-22-2007 04:31 PM

Re: Justice - †

btw, i filed Paul St. Hilaire's solo albums under Basic Channel. How does that make sense? Well, i also put the Rhythm and Sound stuff under Basic Channel and I associate him with R&S. Chain Reaction goes here too unless i have other LPs on diff. labels (see: Monolake)

i also put all my vinyl in poly-lined inner sleeves and plastic outer sleeves.

Re: Justice - †

According to some of my friends, I'm uber-specific and particular with how I organize my cd's and records b/c I (gasp!) organize them alphabetically!

but yea - alphabetical by artist (within artist's releases => chronological), then compilations, then soundtracks, then boxsets (if they're too big to fit in within the normal filing space) then bootlegs

and yea - sometimes, the fans of a band can make it really hard to like an actual band... like I just can't stand the average NIN fan... and how people will roll their eyes when you say in an excited manner 'I just got the new album, and it's actually pretty damn good!"

...wait - what were we talking about?

Shit, this thread has more turns than...uh...something with a lot of turns.

I'm so out of any music scene that I wouldn't be able to recognize a "scene" if it was giving me a blowjob.

(I love this album, btw. Thanks, dubman!)

No I haven't. I had a link to their webpage before though, I don't know if it was through these forums or other place, but didn't get a chance to listen to them because I was at work.

I'll check it out right now.

I wish I could just copy & paste my friend's myspace comment about Tool/APC (I would b/c her page has so much shit on it, despite the fact that I'm on a cable modem, it still freaks out my browser)

but anyways...

it's pretty indicative of every single Maynard fan I've ever encountered

basically it boils down to: "I love Tool, I've seen Maynard's cock"

[she ditched her ride to a "A Perfect Circle" show to go backstage, when she got back there, Maynard and James Iha basically had their pick of chicks... she then rode on Maynard's tour bus to Indiana (she lived in Iowa at the time) and while she 'didn't fuck him b/c she respected him as an artist' she still "dyked it out with another chick for him"]

I have no idea how this is all relevant, but my friends were lame tonight, and decided that at 12 o'clock it was time to go home, and I'm drunk now... and bored as hell

[edit]
and I feel that I should add...
no - she's not really my friend anymore, as her b/f doesn't let her talk to any of her old "guy friends"

Isn't the same with any popular rock band?

joethelion 06-23-2007 11:10 AM

Re: Justice - †

well... I didn't think that that was so common nowadays

and the just the 'devotion' or whatever to a band to
a) ditch your ride
b) not know how the hell you're going to get back to your state
c) the whole "I respect him so much as an artist that I won't sleep with him, but I'll demean myself enough to put on a 'show' with a random stranger"

...but maybe I'm a bit biased as - I can't stand maynard's voice whatsoever

dubman 06-23-2007 11:31 AM

Re: Justice - †

yeah, whereas most bands will just get flashed or something, tool will inspire the right kind of guy to really awkwardly say that he'd give maynard a blowjob.

tool fans are incredible and by incredible i mean hilariously defensive.

adam 06-23-2007 11:43 AM

Re: Justice - †

Yeah, but you guys are missing out on some fairly unique and amazing music because of the fans. I get it though, and also all the things about the band that would put one off, regardless of the fans. Also, it really, really rewards repeated listens, which I understand most of you aren't inclined to spend the time on.

I had a big long post about the virtues of Tool, jokingly indulging GreenPea's joking call for discussion, but fuck it. Who cares but me? No one. That's who.

The Transformers movie is going to suck. I got tickets to a sneak preview for free, though. Fuck am I ever going to go see it and hate it.

I've definitely tried to enjoy Tool but I just can't. I need a little sex in my music. This is not meant as a slam on Tool - it's just not my sort of thing. It's the same reason I became really attracted to the band Suede when grunge dominated American airwaves.

adam 06-23-2007 03:11 PM

Re: Justice - †

Tool's tension and release has some weird similarity, for me, with what I got out of really good fighting game matches. I don't know if anyone will understand that, but I said that to my buddy whom I used to play a lot of Tekken with and who also likes Tool, and he claimed to get what I was saying. I do find it fairly unique...I don't know another band that seems to operate on me in terms of the same parameters as they do.

There is no doubt she is a fucking idiot but I seriously think this sort of thing goes on with any band that has female fans. I am not a Tool fan btw, I really only like their first 2 releases.

Adam, listen to some Neurosis. Their sound has nothing to do with Tool but they definetely are able to build a lot of tension + cathartic moments with their music. Their vocals tend to be on the side of modern hardcore yells or something though with some clean passages that are still quite harsh.

Some of their new tracks are available at their MySpace page here:

There is something about catharis in music though that is almost like having an orgasm even though the source is not sex or there is anything "sexy" about the music itself.

No album should be under 30 minutes? No, there are a lot I can think of that certainly SHOULDN'T be longer than 30 minutes. To bring up an example from this thread Human After All shouldn't have been longer than that. I just don't think you should have to pay $15+ for only that much music (unless it's really great).

The Justice album is pretty good, I would love to hear these tracks in a club. I don't quite understand the whole "album of the decade" mentality. It's fun and has a few pretty solid tracks but it's not quite Discovery, you know? Which is an album I have some problems with besides.

This thread does bring up a good point...is it ever okay to hate the music because of the fans? To be honest, there are a few bands that I won't listen to because of the fans (TOOL), and a few I don't really like admitting to (Nine Inch Nails) because the fans are really obnoxious. It was kind of a hard realization...a few years ago I got into King Crimson, Yes, and Genesis hardcore, basically hoping that someday I'd meet someone who likes those bands and it was pretty disappointing...have you ever actually MET someone who's big into Genesis? I think caring about what the fans are like really destroys the point of the music. So what if a guy who bugs you is their biggest fan?

i'm really big into genesis, actually. i have like 50 bootlegs of live concerts and at least 3 copies of every album from 1970-1986. no kidding, i even did this live compilation last year:

so... i hope i don't annoy you. ;)

i never said i didnt like tool. i dont feel one way or the other about them. they're lovable as much as they are loathable, it just didnt inspire either in me.

all i said was that their fans are really funny. especially when the mere mention initiates discussions on "the point of music"

one of my oldest friends is a big genesis fan. can't say i share it.

Okay, so I apparently fell in love with an early cut of the album. I finally bought the album last week, and was surprised to hear some big differences in D.A.N.C.E. and especially TThhee PPaarrttyy. When I heard the insertion at the 1:16 mark in D.A.N.C.E., I had to go back and make sure I heard it right. And then, they gutted TThhee PPaarrttyy! The drums don't come in until nearly halfway through the song, and the rap is different. WTF? I so love the early version compared to this. And Waters of Nazareth sounds less amazing too.

grumble grumble grumble
