haven't heard the album but the single seems a bit lightweight to me.loooks like they've got their sights set on radio play again.it always seems to work for them that trick.bet they're playing radio one's big sunday or whatever its called.
"the brothers gonna work it out" can not be beaten

Feel free to disagree, but for me:

Dig Your Own Hole > Exit Planet Dust > Come With Us > Surrender > Push the Button.

i just want some classic big beat with a lil psychodelia or a Beth Orton track thrown in! i'm hoping...

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

no way Surrender is that low on the list!

for me..

Surrender -> Dig Your Own Hole -> Come With Us -> Exit Planet Dust -> Push the Button

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

Surrender = Exit Planet Dust > Dig Your Own Hole = Come with Us > Push the button

(dig your own hole and come with us are about same for me etc)

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

"exit planet dust" for me.in the days before the term "big beat" was coined the chems where doing something fresh in dance music.america seemed to catch on next album but then so did norman cook, monkey mafia and a whole host of other cheesers.

The track "Das Spiegel" sounds absolutelly fantastic, reminds stuff from 2002 Come With Us, I think that new album will be bomb if the track will be like this "Das Spiegel" bomb.

sigh. standard downward trend. only slightly better than push the button because the title track was pretty exciting to hear from them, EBW8 made it on there, and the last track is a good fuzzy one. but most of the rest is either uninteresting or kinda bad

There are some fun tracks on it, but it's basicly kinda meh. Of course, this is first impression.

It feels as if they're using the same tricks since Dig Your Own Hole. That album was original, but I could hear similar build ups and other tricks in every following album. Kinda tired with it.

The video for Do It Again is amusing.

undarrenworld 05-21-2007 06:17 AM

We Are The NIght

The new album reminds me somewhat the old albums, especially Come With Us on some songs, where was chemical sound taken to the perfection. Its still there, its Chemical Brothers, but
its knows that since Push the Button the sound have changed, I like very much Push The Button, its album that contains pretty big tunes like on this new album. But its not conceptüal album like Surrender or Come With Us. This new album is the same concept like on Push The Button, you meet some tracks that you will really like.
Its not wicked beat ride like was on Come With Us, its album that contains big hits like Push The Button, so I like it.

You will recognize the Chemical Brothers from the first sound, its the one of the most unique electronic bands, Im glad that they are still with us.

Mikes Traffic Light Review

Nice Track
Listen again
Yuk!

No Path to Follow - War of The Worlds ;) You will hear the vocal later on..
We Are the Night - Yeah, reflects pretty much the same sort of theme opening tracks on the Chems albums - good track.
All Rights Reserved - Heavy bass, nice work - will probably be the next single - sounds quite different to previous stuff, progressive.
Saturate - EBW8 - Dirty.
Do it Again ft. Squeeky Man - Yeah, i love it, great bassline.
Das Spiegel - Airy, light, builds up - i feel like ive heard it before.
Salmon Dance - Embarasing, annoying, SKIP
Burst Generator (HOT TRACK) - Part of it sounds like a slowed down version of EBW6 / Hoops - i keep on seeing dancing white horses when i hear it. Actually, this is a really nice track, it feel like its the wrong tempo, but it does appear to speed up...
Modern Midnight - Sounds like a really cool retro pop song, proabably from 1986 when Ghostbusters was made, and proabably just failed to make the soundtrack. I don't like the loud synth though, i don't think i will play this one lound in my car.
Battle Scars - Same vocal as the opening track, i hate it. SKIP next time.
Harpoons - The Test (pt1) - its an abient track, it could bold on as an intro to The Test.. And i reckon they will use it as their intro on their live set - i just feel it could build into something more, it just goes no-where.
Pills Wont Help You - Its that pop synth again ;) It builds up nicely at some stages, but for me it just doesn't flow - i just get irritated listening to it..

Overall - Some really nice tracks, nothing that makes me go 'WOW' - but maybye in time...

Food Review Coming Soon!

EDIT:

I just listened to it in the car, the best place to listen to any CD.

It has grown on me already, compared with Push The Button it is much more listenable, only a couple of annoying tracks - and some fantastic bass :) It vibrates my eyeballs. (and my other balls).

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

impressions after a couple of listens:

No Path To Follow
- well, just a little looped intro, not much to say about it

We Are The Night
- This is good. Nice up-tempo happy song to get us going.

All Rights Reserved
- Meh, this is not so good. Why do the chems insist on whiny out of tune backing vocals all the time? Maybe without that annoying wailing in the background it might be a decent track. The main vocals are pretty forgettable as well.

Saturate - Nice instrumental with good buildups.

Do it Again - Yeah I like the bassline too, too bad about the whiny high pitched vocals (again). Leave that to Justin Timberlake please.

Das Spiegel
- I guess it's the flute thingy but this reminds me of New Order. I like the sort of vocal giggle/screech effect that's used troughout the song. Nice bubbly happy track.

The Salmon Dance - Errr, it's quite funny actually. It sounds like it would fit right in on a Bloodhound Gang album or something (ok I kinda like the BG ;))

Burst Generator - I agree with Mike, this track is great, but feels somewhat slow. I think it would work better as a full-on dance track but it's still a nice "hands in the air" moment.

A Modern Midnight Conversation - Ah some vocal that are not annoying for a change. A nice groovy bassline, lots of echoying space sounds and some sitar in the background make this pretty classic Chems. The 80's synth sounds a bit out of place though.

Battle Scars - I don't know what to say about this. It bores the hell out of me that's for sure.

Harpoons - This sounds like it should build up into the big fucking huge closing track but sadly it doesn't. Still a good ambient piece.

The Pills Won't Help You Now - Well as usual this is in some ways the most epic track on the album. It's not the big banging dance tune I was expecting, but actually reminds me a lot of Radiohead. Goosebumps time :) Probably my favourite tune together with We Are The Night.

Just picked it up, I think it's pretty good. I know I'll get lynched for this but I honestly think that every Chemicals album is as good as any other one, so I was happy to see the new one was just as good. Burst Generator is amazing, and I like Modern Midnight Conversation a lot too. The single is pretty lame though...

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

Hey i agree with you, i don't really dislike any albums - to be honest i much prefer the newer stuff to the older stuff.

I only really got into the Chems about 3-4 years ago because of the 'singles' album, and i tended to skip to the second half of the album because thats the stuff i prefer really (maybye its just that the 1995 / 1997 stuff sounds a bit dated to me?)(except the live re-worked tracks).

Its the same feeling im getting about Underworld at the moment - im finding it difficult to listen to dubno / stiti. I just don't find them easy to listen to anymore, because my music tastes have changed.... i need to hear some new, fresh material other than web releases that are nice, but not finished material. I thought Silver Boots was quite good. The silver boots / year beat / push jam from the dirtyradio broadcast were fantastic.

Im gonna stop jibbering now.

Only other song I've heard so far is We Are the Night and it sounds like Golden Path and Psych Reel kinda.....dumb vocal sample though. Not too bad of a tune, I think it'll grow on me.:)

i think it's a pretty damn good albumn. like a lot of the same stuff as mike, except that my favorite song is easy battle scars which is in his "yUk" section... very strange. i wonder why no-one else likes that one.

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

I'm really not feeling this album much at all. The standouts for me are Saturate, Das Spiegel and Pillls Won't Help You. Salmon Dance is just embarassing, if they have to resort to gimmick songs like that to pad out 60-odd minutes nowadays, then god help them. Harpoons goes absolutely nowhere but sounds like it shouldn't. Maybe it'll all eventually grow on me like PTB did.

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

Ok, I quite fancy this mix of "Do It Again" that's on their MySpace page now. I'm hoping this is the album version, because it's growing on me and I'm starting to like it.

Same thing happened with "Galvanize." At first I thought it sounded like some total mediocre shit. But once the actual album version dropped it sounded more like a finished track. *Even if I wasn't completely satisfied with it*

Liking the album cover for "We Are The Night," too. Nice one, mate.

The guest vocals are not that great. I like Saturate, Das Spiegal, and Burst Generator. Harpoons is ok.

I wonder what samples were used on this one.

This record is a limp, uninspired piece of shit, and anyone who hands over cash for it is either a) in denial that a duo who once mattered now absolutely do not, or b) retarded.

I think the problem with Battle Scars is that it doesn't really sound like a Chemical Brothers song (Pills doesn't either that much).

*Update*

Yesterday, i decided to give Salmon Dance a try again without skipping...

Its very FUNNY! Its great for the humor element, i think they had a lot of fun making the track....

Check it out, try not to think 'i don't like this to be from the chemical brothers' - try thinking 'ah something different'...

Oh yeah,

I saw New Young Pony Club in Bristol on Saturday night - they did a DJ set in a small club there, didn't realise until i saw the tiny poster hanging up at the bar...

They opened their set with We Are The Night ;)

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

No Path To Follow - dumb intro crap

We Are The Night - Good song, grows on you after a couple of listens

All Rights Reserved
- Don't like the background vocal thing, nothing of real interest here. Meh.

Saturate - Battle Weapon 8, sounds great. Love this song.

Do it Again - Great gym/club track that does what it was intended to do, make you move. I like it.

Das Spiegel
- Really dig this track, it's like classic psychedelic Chems.

The Salmon Dance - What the FUCK are they snorting?!? Mildly amusing, but I wouldn't be caught dead playing this in my car.

Burst Generator - Would've worked as the 'cave rave' song in Matrix Reloaded. Don't know if that's good or bad.....I'm thinking a bit of both.

A Modern Midnight Conversation - Nice dance oriented track that makes you tap your feet. Nothing special though.

Battle Scars - My ears fell asleep.

Harpoons - Mellow track that is too short and unfinished.

The Pills Won't Help You Now - Slow moody song about pills.....not the grand slam final track I was hoping for but it's got nice production.

Overall impression - C+:):(

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

well - I think that that's a bit unfair BSS

I think they've always had really strong singles from every album, and at least one or two great 'album tracks' (well - debatable w/ Push the Button). I would rate their Greatest Hits package as one of the best I've ever bought (up there with New Order's "Substance")

although, I am a bit disappointed with this newer, 'shiny' version of the chems
like - tracks like Denmark, Do It Again, Galvinize...

like before, there was this slight edge of kind of embracing the darker effects of drugs (setting sun, private psych..., under the influence, etc etc) but now - they're aligning more towards the whole "hey let's party" sort of vibe (inhabited by the likes of Fatboy Slim *yawn* and so forth)

it's almost as if - instead of progressing like their counterparts like the Orb or Underworld, they're going through a reverse evolution. In fact, I'd say this started happening around the time they did the remix of that one FBS track (which, I think was post Come With Us & pre- GH)

that being said, I still haven't heard the new album (PM anyone?) and I'm just going by their post Greatest Hits releases

holden 05-29-2007 11:29 AM

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

Yeah, they've been responsible for a lot of great singles, but as an album band, though the quality may have dropped over time, there are still a lot of great cuts, imho. DYOH and EPD still rank among my favorite LPs. Almost 100% killer. Though i'm not a big fan of the more pastoral tracks on Surrender, it's still 70% great, same with Come With Us. Only with Push the Button do i feel they're retreading and not too enjoyable. I agree joe, with the "let's party" vibe that comes out of recent singles like "get Yourself high", "Galvanize" and "Do it Again", but then, most of the singles have been about havin' a good time...you have to go deeper into the albums to get the really trippy, dare i say "meaningful" tracks...

But like every Chems release since Dig in '97, i'll be looking forward to release day and replaying the record a hundred times. Hopefully it'll strike a nerve quickly (as 4 of 5 records did from first listen before).:D

Re: new chemical brothers album and tour

i read an article when come with us came out and the guy had it right on. said that basically the chemical brothers had lost their spirit of experimenting in the studio. maybe because software/hardware had made things a bit more cut and dry 2000 onwards (recycle instead of manually cutting and mapping breaks/samples comes to mind), but everything that made the production so gritty and beautiful from e.p.d and d.y.o.h. was gone. they werent setting loop points in strange places, werent distorting entire mixes with guitar pedals. it all became too clean and lost all of that funk/experimental/drug fueled sound. they were never ones for amazing song writing. they were good at making these ridiculous collages of samples (the first two albums and singles were almost entirely created with samples). and theyve suffered since they stopped doing it.

personally i think surrender was still an amazing album even if clean. it was a strange marriage of styles.
