Re: the 2006 dirty poll: the results

I'm with Holden, Adam and Myshkin on this (with a big ;) to Duckie and his "ivory towers" - missed the point again, dear? :p). Yes, of course, people with intelligence and a variety of musical tastes should be able to express those opinions on that, as Fish Boy says. But yes, of course, people on an Underworld forum are far more likely, in general, to pay attention to an otherwise obscure film sound track that would not necessarily have so much of an impact in the wider music world.

So yeah, of course the views expressed by Dirts are likely to be different from those overall. Does that mean that we are unintelligent? Or does it mean that we have a particular kind of musical taste that encompasses the creative work of the band we (presumably) support by our adherence to this forum?

This is not a poll of all music lovers everywhere. It is not even a poll of all dance music lovers everywhere. It is a poll of Underworld fans.

Nobody is asking you to cloak anything. Just don't expect people to bow down and say "Wow, my God. You are so right. I am so dumb not to agree with you. Jeez. I really must stop loving Underworld."

i don't think that anyone expected people to say that. just in some peoples opinion (and i'm included), having that ost up at #4 is a bit crazy (i can see how it happened) but there is just so many completely fantastic albumns that were put out this year that should be ahead of it

wooohoooo

I dunno why I'm wasting my time but it must be wonderful to be able to dismiss the content of what is said based on an infantile mental projection of who you think the person is that is making the point. But there really isn't any need for you to stretch your little mental muscles to understand that as, oh fuck, it's Myshkin, isn't it? Swatting flies is a very tedious occupation, don't you think? Could end up making one think one is something special based on very paltry achievements. Hopefully you don't take that the wrong way, as I'm not suggesting that responding to you is the intellectual equivalent of swatting flies, or that, to pick a random phrase out of thin air, you're "thick as shit" or anything like that. No, I've enormous respect for your wit and imagination and unrivalled ability to place small words in some kind of order in the heroic attempt to make sentences that convey some kind of meaning, however insipid that meaning may be.
Looking forward to your placing of small words in some kind of order.

albums suck ass anyway - buy singles its easier and less hassle...

can we have a best 'singles' poll next year.... ;)

(btw - i didn't vote in the poll - mainly because of my opening comment and as the self dubbed 'numberonesuperfan' of Underworld wouldn't have voted for it as an album in my top ten had i bothered to... just to clear that up)

wow this was fun!!

I'm already excited for next year when we we send in our top tens and then other people lament the community's poor/mundane taste in music, other people defend the right for other people have opinions, a few personality conflicts emerge, fans of x can't believe it ended up at position number y when z is all the way up at w! and finally the whole thing is swept under the rug because the list "blows" and nobody can stomach talking to anyone else anymore about their favorite albums.

sigh. it used to be so easy to sift through headset to get good recommendations. and I used to get so excited this time of year when people threw down their favorites and I got to go on a shopping spree to make me stupid happy for months

thank you matt for doing the list.

i don't think this list is that bad, anyway (order aside) ... Underworld is always near the top, and i was half-expecting to see the Chemical Brothers on there or something (i know they didn't release an album this year, but you get the drift...)

anyway, i'm definitely going to use it as a reference, so thanks matt!

Here lies the problem I think. We barely get any discussion on new releases in Headset anymore. Come on the old guard, tell me about good new stuff!

here is the list that i sent: it's a bit all over the place, but i had a hard time narrowing it down a lot... now that i think back i should have maybe put hot chip and the knife in, but i never listened to those as much as some of these:

burial - burial
bonobo - days to come
k-os - atlantis
trentemoller - last resort
gnarls barkly - st. elsewhere (i know i know, i do liek it though)
the album leaf - into the blue again
working for a nuclear free city
cut chemist - audience listening.
infadels - we are not the infadels (wore it out, but was also obsessed
for a while)
matisyahu - youth (i wasn't SURE on this one)

i am interested in seeing yours kid cue if you made one! nevermind, i just remembered the 2006 top tens thread that is found here: here which has your list... and other peoples specific list...

i hear ya on the jay dee albumn, although i think that his two albumns should have been one, even though they are so much different... somehow make it work, have of the stuff on donutes is breathtakingly good, and half is kinda weak for me... same with 'the shining'

people's individual lists are here:
http://www.dirty.org/forums/showthread.php?t=5065

i've tried starting threads on new bands, records, etc ... but the discussion almost never takes off. there used to be a lot of enthusiasm about hearing new music on this board, which i think peaked back when audiogalaxy was still around and we had our own group where we passed around music that had been talked about on the forum.

as matt himself has said, these days the ratio of people here solely for UW (and Darren Emerson, and maybe Trentemoller har har) to people who are constantly looking for new music seems to be a LOT higher. anyone who says "well duh it's an UW forum" obviously doesn't know/remember how it used to be. :p

i think there just needs to be a critical mass. a bunch of people left.

Yes but how can you expect the old guard get isnpired to discuss new releases if you "walk in" in headset and you find threads about people feeling happy about the police reunion and diserting about the greatness of Billy Joel and Elthon John. About the whole UW issue, i don't know because i don't even listen to uw anymore, but i guess i got an OD in here. hehe..

My opinion is that there is not much room anymore for good discussions. The people that were really into talking about music left or limit their replies to the basic, i assume because the bar just drop really down around here or something....

But yeah.. it was a lot lot better.

I miss Slippy Epic's stuff. He was still around when I first joined, and really got me into Boards of Canada at the time. And discussions of new music are fantastic and should be encouraged. I don't download stuff from p2ps though, only mix sets from the web. So unless I am really inspired to go out and buy something, sometimes the discussion is all very interesting but I don't have much to say because I haven't heard it and can't really comment.

Where I do get bored is with the "LOLZ u r teh suxx0rz cuz u like Underworld still" thing that seems to go on from time to time. This is the official forum of the band - most people (aside from those in a very small circle of friends of the owner) found this place as a result of their love of Underworld. Most people are open to all kinds of new music, some are more restrained in their tastes.

But yeah. Anyway. More threads about new music please. Preferably with links to a site or a clip that we can listen to/watch and evaluate without having to download it illegally, which I cannot do no matter how much I really want to. ;)

As you well know, you've cast several insults my way in the past to which I've not bothered to reply. But now, following another unprovoked snide remark, I spent a whole paragraph responding. A whole paragraph! That's astonishing, isn't it? To think, I'll never get that few minutes back. Tragic. And what's more, I've followed it up with another entire paragraph. Will I ever learn, I can feel the lifeforce ebbing away.

The only threads on dirty that have been half interesting outside of the interrupt forum have been the ones which kid cue has been active in.

Therefore, the decline in interesting threads is his fault, for going away and breaking my heart and then coming back and not making a new post in the 'introduce yourself' thread so I could send him PMs about how he broke my heart but I forgive him because he is kewl.

Fair enough. What else on the list shall we discuss? Given that 2 Bit Pie is at 26th, someone other than myself must've voted for them. Though it's not a redefinition of electronic music or anything, this latest incarnation of Fluke & Syntax is quite adventurous by those band's previous standards. Heavy guitar, dual vocals, even a space opera jam (think "Fifth Element" but harder).

well this is the problem! i hadn't even heard of this 2 bit pie project, but i love fluke to death so i would have loved an entire thread based on it, and for one, then i'd have found out about it soon enough to get it into my top 10! ;)

:D i'm excited about this one, my heart actually skipped a beat when you said fluke

edit: kid cue, if i did my list right now i'd probably have the clipse albumn and the black grass albumns, but i only got them a week or so before xmas, so i didn't have time to get into it... i'm just a bit far behind

i liked annie a lot, and i see what you're getting at with the comparisons, but the modern fourishes for annie were in how the tunes aggressively attempted to bowl you over half in its throwback and half in the saturation.

shapiro and her friend seem to just be relying on a sense of timing (it's 1980 in 2007! quirky!) to revive an exact same thing that i regularly channel surf through in late night infomercials. i've been told that there's minimal modern tweaking to distinguish this from a bad abba compilation, but if it's there it doesnt affect how positively stale it sounds. and to me it's either calculated or just unwelcome.

i think we just disagree.
to me, this is a terrible excuse for pop. it's taking advantage of everyone's conception of the genre and assuming naivete and bald-faced vacuity sould charm everyone to her because it's all the same, weightless magical stuff.
and it's not, really. the biggest lack there is the lack of edge. there's always a rough snare to most good pop songs that you still come back for 2 months after it's out.
and if what JT and timbaland are doing isnt necessarily "new" for pop, it could certainly be considered to be a mix of different pop elements in ways which sound really fresh.
it exemplifies excellently what i heard someone else once say, that the people who hate on this and in the same breath insulate themselves with warp records fail to see that it's essentially using the same spirit of these bloops and blops for different ends that no one can get on a pedestal about..

i dunno, maybe i just prefer shameless hedonism rather than sexless disco.
