what would everyone think if say the itunes music store lowered it's quality a step? would you all take it then too? there would be some apple apologists that would try to justify it though. i love apple, but i think they already sell their music at too low of a quality...

yes, these are not that expensive. yes, it isn't the end of the world. yes, it doesn't have anythign at all to do with the iraq war(i dont know who, how or where that was brought up, but it was in this or another of the threads somehow), but we did get two higher and then this one was lower...

i don't see a problem with raising an issue. obvoiusly no one is forced to buy this, but i'm pretty sure a few bought it before they knew that it was lower.

and i do realize it got fixed and it's better now... it was a mistake, but if it was intentional i would be mad

and i'm not mad, because i agree that the rr releases are more of an experiment, and that rick is probably not super conserned with the mastering/quality rather than the actual music, however i think that it was valid for some people to raise the complaint

would someone step up and prove that they can tell the difference between the 160 and 192 files. please. i want to know what equipment you're listening on. and please, don't say you didn't download it because it was too low quality, because you'd be proving that you didn't know what the fuck you were talking about.

Have you ever tried to play an Underworld record on one of those old record players you can get at the library? The speaker is so close to the record that all that bass just makes it skip all over the place.

The cool thing is you can fit all of the RR on a C90.

I'll wait for the vinyl or the MiniDisc 8 track with BetaMax webcam broadcasts. Samples on 5.25" floppy disks. Flexi discs and wind-up music boxes.

I just purchased it and missed the whole panic attack on the bit rate...

My mint condition download is 192kbps with a file size of 44,152,041 bytes.

i bought it/downloaded it this morning, just tried re-downloading and it's still 160... will only new customers get the 192 version? *mock-whimper*

(i've been a latecomer to the riverrun series, only bought the 1st two last week... mainly because the live in tokyo cd set whetted my appetite to hear studio versions of those new tracks. been good to ride in the underworld wagon again!)

Sure, it's at 192 now, but there's not as many beats in this release as I like, and not enough clear vocals by Karl. I can really hear a difference there. When I pay out the ass for music, I expect it to have exactly what I want. I mean....I might not be able to pay my mortgage this month because of Big Sister, and I find it unlistenable as it is. Rick, Karl, I think you owe it to me to hop back in the studio and cater to my personal wants and needs. :rolleyes:

(However I have to say that the posts from the "shut the fuck up" faction on here are about ten times as irritating and offensive as any complaints that have been posted. Really out of line.)

I don't think anyone was saying 'shut the fuck up' everyone's entitled to their opinion its just how you go about making it that bugged us "anti-moaners".

Personally, I was just politely pointing out how best to go about making a point rather than flaming the band and the guys at the Lemon, because they are doing this for us, and if the download wasn't to someones liking, shouting and moaning about it doesn't generally help. Frankly I was embarrassed and felt the need to say something here.

Had someone just calmly wrote that it seemed odd that the download was at a different bitrate this time around, it would still have been sorted, from what i understand it was an honest mistake, why else would they change the bitrate this time (not that it really mattered) - a nice calm discussion about this would have been just as welcomed rather than some of the nasty posts that were made.

My overall point really was about the contstant moaning from everyopne about the whole recent output by Underworld, including the Tokyo CD release, lack of touring, CC problems with the downloads etc., some people here want everything yesterday and want it hand fed to them, there are ways and means, and proper channels, i don't wanna preach forum etique because i think that sucks, but we are all grown up people, and by not thinking before you post some nasty shit from the comfort zone behind your computer screen is just weak.

No one is trying to screw over anyone else, and i'm sure if people here write their posts in a way that allows for a decent response then it will come - whoever its from - there are enough people posting here who are polite and know a fair bit about what goes on behind the scenes at Lemonworld and Dirty, and will answer your questions or comments, but being angry and shirty doesn't convey a friendly forum atmosphere which we generally have 99% of the time here. We want more people to join in and talk here, please people don't frighten them away with the constant whining and moaning.

I do understand. And agree that there is definitely a fair amount of give that has to be allowed for considering the circumstances underwhich the material is being released.

But, I'd like to hear their work in all it's "unmastered" goodness! Rather than a congested, artifact-ridden, bottlenecked version.

Or as absolutely darn close as allowable. And Underworl can surely afford to release 192-320Kbps mp3s!

That's the (trivial?) issue.

But then again, I suppose that most people aren't listening with $400 reference headphones and a $300 DAC. (I mean this in the most uncondescending manner possible, really. There are those with $3000-$4000 reference headphones/$5000 DACs... and so on. It get ludicrous in "audiophile" land!)

My point is that's it's all relative. Those who are content with run-of-the-mill consumer grade set-ups don't understand the issue.

Someone in this thread wanted proof (not gonna go searching through this abortion of a thread to pin-point who exactly) that there's a difference between the 160kbps mp3 and the 192kbps mps. Well, go blow a few grand on some decent equipment and prove it to yourself. I'm not gonna ABx this stuff and fill up screens with subjective mumbo-jumbo in an attempt to convince anyone what I'm hearing. But I do hear noticeable differences.

I wonder if anyone thought...about why Underworld are releasing this stuff the way they are...both in format and bitrate...and whatever else.

It's released how it is...if you hear sound artefacts...great! That's part of what makes it what it is...just as with the extra hiss before dolby casette tapes, and crackling on old vinyl.

It's the character of the sound....my 2 cents/pence.

About your previous post missing the point in this thread... (although i agree with you regarding the bit rate thing - and it bothers me not, its like 'why buy a HD TV, but the quality is better'... its a matter of preference, and affordability)

But this entire thread has got nothing to do with bit rates at all, its about how people go about voicing their concerns - and not whining, moaning or spitting out their dummies when all is not 100%...

Had someone started a simple thread pointing out the differences of bit rates and engaged a nice friendly discussion on it then i wouldn't have got so stressed out by people 'moaning' (and i know i'm not the only one ;) ) but someone started screaming and shouting and then people jumped on the bandwagon and i just thought it was not on - and now its been rectified by the powers that be, and people are still not happy beacuse they should have made the bit rate higher, or released it in Flac or whatever...

people - just start a discussion, but don't bash anyone... we can talk this through... Underworld are watching and they do take note, but keep it freindly eh???

Agreed Matt. I'm not for people discussing the difference in bitrates or any other problems they may have but its this purely negative and attacking atttitude that annoys me. People, take a deep breath and count to 10. Think about what youre posting before having a good old moan. Ask for help, how to fix a problem, who to contact etc before going off on one, making demands in a hissy childish fit. I'm not talking about any particular person or any specific situation here before people start pointing fingers.

We're not a hippy community here but I'd like to see more positive vibes and less hating going on. :cool:

Ok, so this is where we differ. I see a lot of complaining, but none of it is "OMG this is shit Rick and Karl are bastards I hate UW and want my money back!" When you love a certain thing, sometimes no gentle constructive (or, not negative) criticism can come across as that, sometimes it all sucks to hear.

But to top it though, the responses to the disappointment that some people are feeling has been much more scathing than the expressed disappointment. And the fact that I'm typing in this thread, on page 7, a thread that was started to tell people to quit with airing their disappointments... is just wrong. Eventually people would've got over their frustrations, eventually people would've learned that the bitrate would've been improved, yada, yada, yada. But no, because of an insatiable need to sweep the negative comments under the carpet, we've carried out this saga in it's own thread (we should've installed neon blinking lights in the title :rolleyes: ) and what good does that do?

And me, I've just been having a laugh at how stupid and trivial these complaints all are. And that's what you get when you knit-pick and get idiosyncratic -- immature banter from me. :D But in the end Matt... I wouldn't be talking about the forums being filled with whining and moaning when you yourself started a thread just for it. And if you'd let people have their own differing opinions about R&K's work and allow them to voice them without demanding they be prim and proper like Alfred The Butler in Buckingham Palace, then we wouldn't have 7 pages of whining, moaning and gnashing of teeth... all in it's own thread, the thread that you started.

So, will everyone kindly voice their opinion to the sales team at underworldlive.com and let these threads sink, and take this just as one to grow on?

Again, I say that just because you love Underworld doesn't leave them exempt from the norms of business, being that people go head over heels when you deliver, and complain when you don't. People don't have to be positive (and let's face it, a complaint is not a positive thing!), but this air you all exude that people are taking things to the next level when they're not is having more of a negative pull on things than people mentioning that 160kps sounds worse than 192kps.

Well I chimed in straight away because of a particular person whose posts will still be found in the forum posting three cursing posts in the space of 5 minutes, then continuing by starting a separate thread also moaning (which was subsequently merged into the main thread).

So yeah. That was pretty damn negative imo. I found it embarrassing, and I know I am not the only one, particularly after the guys at Lemonworld had released the download early for us.

There is a bit of a difference between voicing a valid complaint and whining on and on about something in a little hissy-fit of a temper and foul language.

I am sorry if I picked on just this one example, but there was also the multiple posts of people who couldn't get their credit cards to work. What is anyone on the forum able to do about it? I am reminded of stimpee's disclaimer.

I understand that people could be frustrated, and they were pointed in the right direction, i.e. email uw sales to get it sorted. But whining on and on serves no useful purpose other than to annoy people. Just because someone says something half a dozen times doesn't mean I have to agree with it. As soon as Lemonworld realised their mistake they rectified it. End of.

Yeah, people have posted concerns and complaints about the 160 kbps bit rate and other things, but it's the "shut the fuck up" faction that resorted to personal attacks and name calling, and I'm surprised that stimpee and Matt and a few others here seem to be oblivious to that fact.

Well, no one's able to do anything about it. I don't think though that this was the point, the point was for these people to talk about it, see if anyone else had problems, et cetera...

And those people should be left off to the side to talk amongst themselves. Going in and waving your finger doesn't help, it only fans flames. Go to anyone else's forums, go to software forums, car manufacturer forums, whatever... people go to them go talk about their problems as much as to talk about how cool that product is.

This is becoming more and more a matter of deadlocked opinions. And it is in the matter of such things that you probably won't reach a settlement between the two or more factions. So why not concern ourselves with other topics?

The people who have been really angrily bitching about the sound quality, that's who. None of the so called "shut-the-fuck-up-ers" have been using the word "fuck" or "shit" and ":mad:" with anywhere near the same ferocity and frequency as the complainers. I'm still in disbelief (or at least I would be if I wasn't so jaded ;) ) at the way the complaints have been delivered by some.

i think it's more just an example of what some people wanted the complainers to do. yes, they didn't say it so blunt, but the vibe was there, and i remember (don't have time to re-look through the whole thread, and the other one too to find the posts) but people were saying that 160 is fine, you should be happy with what you get, you can't hear the difference, etc etc, which IS dismissing their points, and essentially telling them to shut up because they are wrong (I KNOW there are differences, but having your point of 160 sounding worse than 192 shut down is rediculous, since it is an absolute truth, because there is less information)

i agree with future proof 100% on this, i'm impartial to the whole thing, i dont' like the 5 posts in a row about the same thing, quick and emotional, but his followers who agreed that they wanted 192 got shut down too
