wow. downloaded this morning and had my first listen. its got superb mixing, great new sounds with a few beats, but overall not my cup of tea. this doesnt have any of the repeat-listen value that other UW music has for me. i did enjoy my entire first listen, but i just dont see myself popping this back in as oftern as RR1 or DNBWMHM etc. Way too chill for my personal liking.

But it's great that this recording apparently was not compressed and/or limited. :)

That shows that its not clipped. Post a spectrum wave and you'll get a better picture of the quality compared to the other releases.

What will you see besides the lowpass? (which is the same btw: IABS~16000hz, LBT~16000hz)

I think clipping/limiting is much worse than a 16000 lowpass. Look what they did to old classics (on 1992-2002):
Pearls Girl (STITI top, 1992-2002 bottom, both normalized to show the difference)
Dirty Epic (dubno top, 1992-2002 bottom)
You'll definately lose 'punch' here.

Thank god that they did not do that to their new release.

Okay Okay Okay!!!

I'm EXTREMELY sorry. It's my fault. I messed up.

You're right - the audio was encoded at 160k rather than our standard 192k.

I've corrected this - and the new zip is up for you all to download at your leisure. Lucky we let you download more than once really!

Very sorry to you all and thank you for being so on the case.......

ha, i never even really noticed that but yeah it's quite a difference.
I do love the "open" sound of STITI, even though you have to turn up the volume a bit more than most modern releases, at least you get dynamics.

I didn't realise which version of Quicktime I had and the stupid auto-updater doesn't tell you that version 7 exists. I don't want itunes, so I'll try the VLC player and the the QT stand alone if it doesn't work.

I think I'll just keep the 160 version for now.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

i'm just playing "I'm a big sister..." over and over. It's so multifaceted and full of subtle yet effective sounds. and though i'm not a huge fan of ambient music, this release does what UW always do so well... challenge expectations and take you on an audio journey. With the preference for vocal sounds and samples rather than lyrics, the voice as instrument is explored here perhaps more than any other UW release.

Just wondering, though...are the tracks listed anywhere? Jan, i appreciate your making the cue sheet...just not sure what to make of the last piano bit. Is it a separate track? Interesting that it's not mixed with the previous.

Here's another cue sheet. Thanks, Jan, for the initial one. Pretty sure the first part is all Peach Tree, and the last track is 11 Hundred Hz.

Code:

TITLE "I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and This Is My Horse"
PERFORMER "Underworld"
FILE "05 I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and this is my Horse.mp3" MP3
  TRACK 01 AUDIO
    TITLE "Peach Tree"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 00:00:00
  TRACK 02 AUDIO
    TITLE "Mowed Path"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 10:03:00
  TRACK 03 AUDIO
    TITLE "Showlder"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 14:58:70
  TRACK 04 AUDIO
    TITLE "Wedge"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"
    INDEX 01 18:35:27
  TRACK 05 AUDIO
    TITLE "11 Hundred Hz"
    PERFORMER "Underworld"

I Agree with you TheBang, this should become the official cue sheet except I feel that 11 Hundred Hz should start with the note right away as in Jan's version so I suggest change it to :

TRACK 05 AUDIO
TITLE "11 Hundred Hz"
PERFORMER "Underworld"
INDEX 01 28:12:44

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

Loving this more and more with each listen. Certainly not as urgent as the beat-heavy "Lovely Broken Thing" or darkly lyrical as "Pizza For Eggs", but these soundscapes are just beautiful!

Anyone catching the vocal samples, some we've heard before: "I'm a lonely bollock. Sometimes, happy bollock"! Throughout "Peach Tree" there's a phased and vocoded female voice, sounds to me like "I'm not imitating..."

Also, have you noticed that this latyest River Run, but indeed all of them, have made a lot of use of inserted silences? That is, the music or Karl's vocals have short spaces of silence at various frequencies, so it sounds very spaced. "Peach Tree" does this with the two pads, but the frequencies at which they alternate are different, so that sometimes they construct and sometimes they are out of phase. Karl's vocals on "Mowed Path" are also very spcaed, making them sound "beep"-like. I think the delays are used a lot on the guitar parts on "P4E", especially.

uck, lovely broken thing is good... but since then the series is getting progressively worse.

they need to stop releasing these b-sides and crack on with the full album!

Karl already said that these releases are from the archive and that work continues on the album. Some tracks may be considered to be b-sides, but some of Underworld's best work has been on a b-side :) If these releases really were slowing down their album release proper then I might see how someone could complain, but since theyve been working on the album and on the soundtrack (and now another soundtrack), your argument is a bit redundant. Horses for courses, as they say. Some like it, some dont.

Yeah, I was using a bad splitter on my Mac, and when I used that timing, it cut the first part of the piano note into the previous track. I tried it with Cue Splitter on a PC though, and that timing seems correct, so I've fixed it on my cue sheet. Thanks.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

Personally, I thought LBT kinda blew it, what with the first three tracks being awesome and the rest being boring as hell. I do like the sound of the release though...I think that it should be longer, as UW doesn't get much of a chance to just sit down and chill out. Sort of the direction I was expecting them to take with the RRP, but this time I don't really hear any standouts, nothing like "JAL to Tokyo" or "Back in the Fears" that could be played live.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

I have been listening to this loads over the past couple of days. For me, Peach Tree is a masterpiece. The transition from Peach Tree into Mowed Path gives me total goosebumps every time, it is so beautifully crafted and balanced. And the final piano piece is quite lovely, with undertones of Keith Jarrett about it (as I prolly already said somewhere, I think).

In terms of what will be on the album and what won't, though, I would be surprised if much of the RiverRun stuff made it to an album at all. Not because it doesn't deserve to be there, but because it strikes me that this was a very definitive non-physical project, a new way of marketing music as complete "pieces" rather than singles/EPs/albums. From that point of view, all three releases have been a great success for me. Each has its own flavour and emotion about it. I am still not decided whether Big Sister is my favourite of the three or not, but it is a difficult decision to make. :)

more like 1 a-side with 4 c or d sides (for the other RRs)... :(

but as for this RR i feel this is final a RR that I can
FULLY sink my teeth into (for the other RRs I could
only listen to select tracks). This release doesn't
really have stand out tracks, but it doesn't need it
AT ALL and I wouldn't want it.

...now that it has been re-encoded to 192 I have no
complaints at all.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

listening to "I'm a big sister" these past three days has inspired me to revisit my old Orb records! Not too bad, this ambient music (provided it has a beat every now and again!);)

It could be the longer track times or the sparse (in placed) arrangements, but i agree with BeautifulBurnout that the transitions are tops! Most seamless mixing of the three RiverRuns, i think.

Too bad the total time for the three releases comes to ~84 min...can't get it all on one CD ( i know, try overburning, right?). But even if i could, i'd not know how to order them..such different styles! Do you shuffle? Do you keep em chronologic?

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

Just curious, but those splitting programs produce gaps at track transitions, don't they?
If you have foobar2000 0.9.x or a newer Winamp or a DAP which supports gapless playback (my rockbox'ed iriver H120 does) you could also use this tool, that cuts mp3s perfectly.:) I'm not going to destroy that wonderful mixing with gaps.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

As has been discussed before, cuesplitter for both mac and pcs will cut mp3s perfectly. I have studied the mp3 file and have made minor adjustments to the CUE provided here and will publish it soon (Adobe Audition crashed on me! :()

I have now listened to this about 6 times since d/l.

The ambience is brilliant. It's a wonderful journey and I definitely intend to take this trip a few more times this week.

This was definetely a treat to my ears. The last 2 releases, although great, and good, did not have have this kind of impression on me.

There's no feeling like the feeling of goose bumps while listening to music.

R&K - bravo!

After about 8 listens, I agree, this really has moved me more than the previous riverruns.

Peach Tree is just epic, especially on repeated listens. There's a lot going on here that totally transports me. I love it :)

This is also the first riverrun where I've hesitated slicing it up into individual tracks. I think I'm going to keep this one whole.

Re: "I'm a Big Sister..." thread.

I think i probably come over as i'm not a big underworld fan as many of the things i post are negative, but its not so!

I do own 20+ underworld cd's, majority of which i appreciate, but i just feel that time on the riverrun project should be spent on crafting the new album which i have high hopes for. Maybe its a case that the current releases have never fit my mood, as i think with most ambient music you have to particulary be in that "zone". Months down the line i may love the new release, who knows!?

I want the new album to be very much upbeat, ala 2 months off style, to make me happy!
