Re: 2017-03-13/14/15 TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, Holland
The third day's recording of Rick's set is the best quality. Just has a bit of Stimpee and me talking in the beginning, trying to decide if we could put the recorder somewhere on the balustrade of the balcony where we were standing, but in the end I just held it in my hands as I didn't want it to fall down. After that it's pretty clean and good quality, and it has Confusion the Waitress :)
For the other days we were up front near the stage and the recorder was basically on the stage next to one of the stage monitors. The first day has some clipping and distortion as I was still getting to grips with the recorder settings. |

Another vote of thanks, King of Snake!
Rick's sets are really great. A few repeats from night to night, but a wonderful build and it's fun trying to spot the UW tracks/samples/snippets/new works(?). Much obliged, sir! |
Re: 2017-03-13/14/15 TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, Holland
any idea who the female singer is at the start of Rick's Day 3 set? his daughter perhaps?
edit: im in love with this track; this set. |

hearing the 'improved' opening to Skyscraper gave me goosebumps as I thought back to how listening to a bootleg used to be.

Re: 2017-03-13/14/15 TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, Holland
My attempt at a setlist for Rick's set, night 1 (13th)
1. Good Morning Cockerill 2. Surreal Carnival / Lenny Penne 3. Unknown (Mosaic Confusion) 4. Unknown (Cars) 5. One Turned In (Rick Smith's Version) 6. Witness 7. Billy Goat (Remix) 8. Bass Interlude 9. Blue Bowler Commentary 1. 0:00-6:14 Extended mix with vocoder on Karl and additional synths. Might have been a version considered back in 2007-2008, before settling on releasing the 'acoustic' version on OWB. Percussionless. 2. 6:14-15:05 The track used in the Surreal Carnival Experiment promo videos. Vocals are from Lenny Penne but there's nothing instrumentally similar - just as easily a remix of Bamboo. 3. 15:05-23:17 Harder to identify. The melodies are different but the synths sound taken from Confusion the Waitress (live and studio versions) and there's some atmospheric similarities to Mosaic. 4. 23:17-30:15 The beat in this track is familiar but I can't place it. Karl's singing the colors of cars similar to "To Dream of Love". 5. 30:15-39:10 Slow moody dream-pop like song, somewhere between Witness, Motorhome, Antirom 3, and Moon In Water (particularly the early mixes) without using sounds from any of them. Features Nina Nastasia on vocals, an artist Rick has played a few times on radio shows. 6. 39:10-40:59 Witness, pretty much exactly as on record. 7. 40:59-46:16 Plodding track with a great deal of percussion taken from Billy Goat. Witness vox "you smell good" continues through it. Ends on a few rapid synth lines like Nuxx, one sounds a little similar to the early version of KoS 8. 46:16-48:21 Long interlude with a deep modulating synth (might be considered the outro of the last track). The intro to Surreal Carnival comes back for a bit in here. 9. 48:21-END The big piano track as posted earlier. Can't hear any similarities to existing material. |

I believe track 9 ("the big piano track") is called Blue Bowler... by comparing Stimpee's photo below, and a vid I made during the track ;)

Re: 2017-03-13/14/15 TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, Holland
Here's the other two nights...
Night 2 (14th) 1. Unknown (Amnesia DNB) 2. Surreal Carnival / Lenne Penne 3. Unknown (Mosaic Confusion) 4. Witness / Billy Goat (Remix) 5. Downpipe (Dub) 6. Blue Bowler 0:00-6:16 Bubbly drum and bass track with some old school hatwork and the "amnesia" vocal loop over it. Recording cuts out once or twice during it, fades are clean though. 6:16-11:50 Mostly the same as before. 11:50-21:14 Begins with a reprise of the Amnesia vocals on delay. Mostly the same as before. 21:14-32:15 Starting to think Witness and Billy Goat (Remix) are a proper sequence like Shudder / King of Snake. Witness is still the same. Billy Goat (Remix) differs significantly from the last performance, and this time the outro segues into breakbeats (which are mostly adapted from the Pearl's Girl pattern, but with other elements I can't place) that eventually fade into reverb. 32:15-41:49 Dub mix of Downpipe with Japanese vocals similar to Rick's Bungalow with Stairs work, and Karl's vocoded breakdown lyrics. Begins with a looping 'heavenly' pad and ends on the breakdown build synthline long and drawn out. 41:49-51:49 Blue Bowler, mostly the same as before. Night 3 (15th) 1. One Turned In (Rick Smith's Version) 2. Unknown (Cars) 3. Confusion The Waitress 4. Unknown (Not Quite Nimbey Boing Pop) 5. Unknown (All The Birds) 6. Surreal Carnival / Lenne Penne 7. Blue Bowler 8. Downpipe 0:00-8:56 Didn't compare closely, seems to be mostly the same as last time. 8:56-18:50 Didn't compare closely, seems to be mostly the same as last time. Ends on a modulating delay. 18:50-25:30 Actual Confusion the Waitress this time! Rick takes his time on the intro, no vocals are used, and there's a fair amount of new synthwork in the outro. Reminiscent of the 1996 European Club Gig performance. 25:30-29:07 Segueing cleanly out of Confusion we have an outro that sounds a little like Nimbey Boing Pop, or one of those minimal bridge tracks they played occasionally in 2008 sets. Elements of Confusion carry on along with it but the song never fully returns, and the section ends on a looping pad (which I think is from a Beaucoup Fish era track, but I can't place it, also sounds eerily similar to the intro of Ignition by Paul Hartnoll). 29:07-35:25 Slow minimal style house track with lots of pitch tom hits and lyrics from Karl that I don't recognize. Karl's lyrics and singing sound a bit like Barking era song writing, Boy Boy Boy, or even their Mk1 material - less abstract than usual. Doesn't appear in the other two sets. 35:25-41:28 Surreal Carnival / Lenne Penne again, this time with a different introduction (comes a little abrupty out of the last track). Mostly the same as last time. 41:28-50:26 Blue Bowler, a little faster on the uptake this time but mostly the same. 50:26-59:05 Downpipe, pretty much exactly the same as last time. Quote:
