Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
I thought in a small place like the RFH it would be more like a classical concert.
Seems like the hardcore U/W fans, those who like sophisticated soundscapes and lyrics are not many, obviously not even to fill the RFH. Members of the South Bank Centre are not automatically people with certain musical or art maturity. Maybe that's why they felt they need to please with a floor-filler. Quote:
Well, maybe there is some homework left to do. To learn people how to listen and enjoy music as art could be one. |

As far as I am concerned this is the best Underworld gig I have ever seen. Everything was perfect. The sound quality was superb (apart from that blip in Minneapolis that gave rise to some classic comedy moments nonetheless, including the poor roadie who slipped and fell on his bum trying to fix it), the lighting was inspired, the minimalism of the art-work was spot on, the crowd were great and just hearing Dirty Epic played like that means I can die a happy woman (well, ok, my lurgey isn't actually that bad...) |

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Speaking of nuxx, I was kinda happy as it was a little like the DubNoVersion...
In the recorded version (and bootleg babies) It has rising note patterns through the second half. Instead last night's version has the beepy-drunk-trumpets that are all over the tramway 94 version (like the bit right at the start). I have no idea if it were deliberate... I guess that's a little trainspottery... |

If you think the crowd was boring, you must have been outside the main hall. I've not see such a keen crowd in years.

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
I couldn't agree more with the above post. The crowd was amazing.
It was like the good old days of clubbing. Rez was amazing. I certainly felt that a vast majority of the people there were Underworld fans and NOT casual RFH members. Best atmoshpere of any Underworld gig ever! |

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Hi all,
Long time lurker, formerly of this parish back in the brown era. I've seen UW in several formats over the years - there's the big festival UW, the smaller university tour UW, the academy tour level UW and the Karl Hyde mini UW - all of which have been different experiences. Saturday's gig was one of the most fun and enjoyable gigs I've seen them do. Watching Karl sitting at the side of the stage cheering Rick on during Surfboy and Rez is another example of why this band has always been about more than just the sublime music - there's love there. From the beautifully stark typography to the minimalist lightshow (I loved the rising sun during Bigmouth) and the chance to hear tracks we'd all never expected to hear live (especially after the run of disappointing setlists in the past couple of years), the whole show was staged perfectly, which quickly dispelled any fears of it being a boring, seated run through. I'm still slightly suspicious of a laptop based set up that, to my mind, removes the opportunities for spontaneity that used to be so key to UW live, but that's a tiny gripe in an album run through format. Being up on the balcony meant we had a great view of what Rick was doing throughout and it's clearly a step forward from what was a fairly embarrassing set of KCRW videos, but it would be nice to see some more synths come back in to play. I really hope revisiting dubnobass... and who they were when they made it has an influence on the live direction they take in future. It's not necessarily about having Karl hoon it up and down the stage as he used to 15 / 20 years ago, but feeling part of a unique, live event has always been the appeal and that, to me, has been lost in the last 5 years or so. But anyway, an awesome gig in a surprisingly appropriate venue. Roll on March! |
Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Hey dss,
I think you pretty much nailed my exact feeling on the live setup over the last few years - they have changed from the early days no doubt, every tour brings its own unique "feel", venue, crowd, etc all play into it. The Festival Hall gig was amazing, up there with Somerset House & Vienna (for me) , great sound, great crowd, stripped down visuals, cool security staff letting people do their thing (dance). I got a massive kick out of just seeing the varying age groups in the room - everyone got into the spirit and danced their socks off :) Great to see Rick & Karl back in action after their Olympic hiatus - hopefully this will energise them further for more dates and future material. It's been an absolute honour to see these guys live and have their music as the soundtrack over the past 20 years. Thanks guys, you never fail to deliver the goods. Was lucky enough to bump into Rick before and after the gig, what a humble guy, had a nice chat, got an autograph for the kids (6 & 3) already fans - photo with Rick, the missus and myself. We couldn't have asked for more - the perfect night out. regards Will. |

I agree mostly about the barking tours as a whole but the KCRW video was a joy. It showed the chemistry of the two of them and I really liked watching karl come from being groggy and sick to ecstatic by the end. And that rendition of bird1... oh man. |

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
I too got a set list from the mixing desk, we were the first into the auditorium from the left and the guy in the red tee said I could have one at the end. 3rd set list from an uw gig.
Sonically, the event was great, though certainly more heavy on the bass and dance vibes than the album. Reminded of the tramway recording. It was euphoric, fast and slow and very rich in texture. The projection just added to the tomato vibe, simple, though I don't know if many of you needed a reminder of the track. Never thought I'd see Minneapolis or Bigmouth live, both amazing, and the amount of tracks played that had no vocals from Karl was a surprise, great Harmonica from Karl I thought the crowd were great, seemed like they knew the tracks - not just lucky with tickets or RFH pre - pre sales. "Christ on Crutches" was the loudest crowd response by far. Amazing gig and experience in a tiny venue, we made a proper weekend of it, class hotel and swanky meal on the Sunday. Picked up a Rez disc, a t-shirt and gig poster - they gave a freebie red bag too. We acquired a RFH event insert, the ones at the door to the venue. Very accommodating staff. Thanks guys, see you in March at Manchester, think this is smaller capacity than 2.5 k |

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Yes, Darren was largely doing the between song stuff, so removing the paper synth lists and making sure all the kit had booted up correctly and the patches etc were loaded. He was probably on stage for a minute per song.
(Talking of which there is a fascinating shot around 41 minutes into the KCRW video where you can see the sample discs Rick uses for his sounds) |
Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
anyone have pics of the merch?
|
Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
It was fairly boring merch tbh : the £50 box set, the vinyl, yellow Rez 12", three Art Prints as a set at £100, a gig poster, and a dubnobass shirt. Some of the dubnobass shirt had the date/ venue on the back, and I missed out on the shirt.

The crowd was astonishing. Truly "good vibrations" as Karl likes to say. I've seen this band 10+ times and I've never felt energy from the crowd like I did in London - and for music everyone knew by heart. Brilliant audience. No topping it.

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
i understand the rationale behind the show, and doing the tracks as they are on the album.
they sound good, and from the clips they did a great job on them. however, for the last several years, i fear they have gone away from what made them exciting as a live band. doing improvs. and that saddens me. listening to the early shows, and even the one jam on the boxset shows they have the capability to do a lot more than just individual songs. maybe next year they will consider that. in the meantime, getting a recording or if they make a dvd, watching it once would be enough for this type of show. because it will not change much. later -1 |
Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Having seen the show, I assure everyone that if there is a live recording / dvd etc, that it will be worth watching and rewatching : it isn't just "album in full", but a recreation of the record using new instrumentation and kit, with many live debuts and very rarely played songs... and a crowd as fervent as any show of theirs I have seen.

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Yup thats my video. The only video I got on the night, sadly. I was tempted to record Surfboy, but I wanted to enjoy it and I saw plenty of cameras recording at the time, I thought one of those would end up on YouTube... however no sign of it yet!!
Anyway, I have updated the Gigography http://uwlive.rowla.com/gigs/view/496 Any photos people would like to share for the gallery, please send them my way! |
Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Who maintains the gigography? I found some old setlists I kept at the time (Wolverhampton 1999, Brixton 2002) and want to add those in.

Re: 2014-10-11 Royal Festival Hall
Hi there,
So I got about 30 shots I am half happy with and I have shared them on my Flickr here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidd...7648378984668/ I had my long lens but was told by staff to put it away after The first song. So I snuck it out once Rez started up and grabbed a good few more before the end of the show. I tend to prefer to enjoy the gig rather than shoot throughout so it wasn't too shit to have to put it away, I grabbed a few extra shots on the iPhone anyway. Had a great night and it was nice to meet a lot of the Dirts before and after. Aesome gig and very different from anything else I will ever see from them. As a side thing, I also have some nice shots from the Dublin gig during the Barking tour, I think Stimpee was at this one also (in the snow!): https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidd...7625481867532/ |

Just wanna say it was great to meet the dirts, amazing bunch. Gig was phenomenal as everyone here said. It passed in the blink of an eye for me. Can't wait to hear the recording, and I really hope an official video does end up getting released, even though that might be a pipedream.
