Swift, thanks again, and again! Great new revelations, if only in listening to familiar tracks in a different order which creates a different feel entirely! I've probably listened to AHDO at least 50+ times, so anything unexpected or out of order makes me reevaluate and reappreciate the original.

TheBang, you beat me to it! I'm at DA3D and making notes! Definitely love the "Twist" drum outtro freak out-- they should have kept this, just to punch up a solid, but midtempo track! "Momove" - expected on the LP sequencing to be DA3D, in this sequence it has even more power than the original. The transitions into The "Little Speaker" piano feature and "Ansum" sounds make perfect sense.
'Ballet Lane" - always one UW's most subtly beautiful tracks, here gets some suble chances, and the closer "Luetin" - somehow sounds even more punchy, though fundamentally the same as the released version.

Could it be that listening closely for differences from the familiar version makes us take notice of bits we hadn't noticed before? Even shuffling the sequence of tracks can have an emotional effect!

Identical to album version:
Two Months Off
Trim
Dinosaur Adventure 3D
Luetin

Differs minorly:
Sola Sistim (just fades out a few seconds earlier than the album version)
Ess Gee (album version has additional wind chime sounds starting at about 2:00, and the final bass note)

Differs majorly:
Ballet Lane (a lot of differences, subtly, starting at about 2:00)
Twist (extended ending)
Mo Move (Ansum mixed onto the end)

In my estimation, the piano part is from Ansum (in the works at least since 2001, when Quick Bit for Web was released), and was borrowed for Little Speaker (an apparent late addition to the album). The piano part is significantly longer in Ansum, and in this Mo Move/Ansum mashup, than the amount of the piano part used in Little Speaker.

Yes, definitely! I noticed bits of Ess Gee and Ballet Lane that I'd never "heard" before. It's given me some new appreciation for the album.

Some additional thoughts, I've had:

Has anyone ever seen it spelled "Sola Systim" anywhere else? Just wondering if that's a typo.

swift, do you have any information or sense as to when this promo made its way to V2? The album wasn't released until Sept. 2002, but it was being worked on back to 2001 at least.

The track order isn't too different from the final release. Ess Gee moves down a couple slots. Mo Move/Ansum becomes Little Speaker, and Mo Move goes to the front.

hey... any chance someone could hook me up with a dropbox link or whatever...

I really can't do torrents. I'm behind a firewall at my studio and I'm on shitty pay-as-you-go internet at my flat - so to download ANYTHING is reeeeaaallllyyyy expensive - like I downloaded something (scans of a few old comic books) that was less than 1GB a while back, immediately after I "topped up" to have 3GB of internet (£15) - and when it was done - I had to top-up again... costing me another £15

thanks in advance!

TMO doesn't have a different intro than the album version?

Re: Ansum — A Hundred Days Off industry promo

oh wow...

Just listened to "Mo Move" so far... it's a really really really great version.

Sure, it's basically "just"

Mo Move -> the second half of "Little Speaker" -> the intro to "Ansum"

but it works so much better than you'd think. I always found the percussion on the intro to "Ansum" to be slightly grating and out of place. Like, I preferred the "Quick Bit for the Web" version (where it just started with those ambient tones + synth). But... how this is - where the "Ansum intro" comes at the end... the percussion TOTALLY makes sense now.

Wow, the "new" Twist outro is fantastic! I can see why they took it off the album version though; sounds a lot like the outro to TMO. BTW it's really nice to have some actual segues between tracks!

Yeah, I agree that that's probably why it got axed. I think it still has tons of merit and should've been kept though. They could've just separated the two tracks in the album and let it be a callback motif.

no, but it does have a different ending— the fadeout is about 10 seconds longer with some odd beats here and there. nothing major, though.

anyone else notice that the actual *mix* of twist is different even before it gets to the fadeout?

No, it's the same, but the difference is that it fades into the beginning of Twist, rather than fading out to silence like on the album.

I didn't notice anything significantly different, other than some minor pre-mastering level differences. Do you have any specific examples?

MoMove was always up there with my favorite UW tracks, this just distills the better/best parts of Ansum/Quick Bit and Little Speaker and makes it epic.

Yeah, can't get enough of the drum barrage at the end of "Twist". I do hear a loop or two from TMO, but with enough new whooshes and Karl's saying something i can't make out, i can't complain.

around 5:25 to 5:55 there is a woo-woo-woo-woo sound sort of like a siren on the album. it seems to be missing in this mix.

also in mo move the instruments, at least to me, seem to be at different levels throughout.

Probably. That's all part of the mixing and mastering process.

I quite like this mix of MoMove. And I can totally live without Little Speaker. Other than that, and Twist, the rest of the album is pretty much as on AHDO proper.

Has anyone converted to MP3s from FLACs?

I did this several (3, maybe 4) days ago, and submitted an access request for the Tracker, and I still can't log in. I know that I won't be notified when access is granted, but is there anyone reading here that might be able to verify what my status is? Or, point me to someone to ask?

Waiting for someone to do the side by side spectrum analysis :)

You dont really need to. They have done some subtle mastering on it, and removed a lot of the high end area where ambient noise from the original recording is still heard on the promo. I quite like it because to my ear anyway i feel the individual elements have a lot more "room" to move.

The compression added at mastering pushes out this subtle noise and spreads out the sound so that it doesn't bounce around as much. You notice it hugely on the drums at the intro to TMO... you dont need a spectrum analysis... just listen at a decent volume. The bass is really tightened up on the mastered version and not allowed bounce around in all that ambient space that you can hear on the promo....

To my ear the whole album sounds hugely different as a result. I can hear bass lines that are now more hidden beneath the rest of the music.. i can hear extra percussion elements...

But what it isn't is subtle. And at first i was thinking it was way better to be able to hear this stuff but when you listen to the original you realise that by burying certain elements and cleaning up the sound, there is a more subtle use of sound... you dont neccessarily need to distinguish all of the individual elements for the effect to work.. it means it is less tiring on the ears and far easier on the brain... Im learning a lot from this actually, its great to be able to hear a before and after!

Also listen to the vocals on TMO... especially around 4.30 you can hear far more of Karls voice underneath the vocoder.. this is also cleaned up hugely.

Really Really value this recording.. it is a dream to hear an unmastered version of anything let alone a whole album because it gives you a chance to listen and learn.. and even try and replicate .. Brilliant!
