Anyone else having serious volume issues with this release? I had my iPhone earbuds in, and the volume CRANKED, and could still just barely hear the overture as well as most parts of the other tracks.

It is fairly dynamic (like most classical music) therefore gets very loud when a lot of stuff is happening, but tends to be quiet when not much is going on.

no I mean barely audible thru the iphone earbuds. I can't listen to the Overture on my phone. It's practically silent for minutes at at time.

On the comp, I need to turn the volume way up -- much higher than any other album.

hmm... well - when I played it on my laptop - it was really hard to heard the majority of songs - except for those HEAVY CRASHING NOISES

As far as my actual iPod... I've only listened to the Overture and did like a reeeaaaaalllly quick skim through the other tracks. .... but anyway

yea - it is hard to hear some parts but it didn't seem as bad as when I played it via computer speakers (I mean - it was easier to hear on headphones than on my speakers - but I don't use those standard white iPod headphones, I've got Shure headphones/earbuds - forget model number). I could hear definite things going on on the "Overture" - there's just a lot of low drones and soft synth

But I think this is down to the fact it's not an "album" and it's not even really a "soundtrack" in the sense of a normal soundtrack. I mean - this is for the theatre, where it's more sound effects and cues for actions within the play

I used to help with audio stuff back when I dated a girl who was getting her BFA in technical theater, and more often than not - they'd only use like... less than 30 seconds of any track -> be it ambient tone, instrumental track, or even a full on song (or with a "full on song" you'd get more than 30 seconds - but like never the full length song... unless it was a musical... but now I'm just rambling)

Yes, the volume is fucked up and won't play very loud in my car. Even cranking it doesn't sound much better. On the computer it is not as noticable as stated by others above, and I haven't yet converted to iPod to check it as well....

Not sure I understand the question? The digital copy and physical CD are separate products. But AFAIK, they are identical in content.

As for the volume, yes, this hasn't been brickwalled like most music releases are today. It has a large dynamic range, so the softs are going to be softer, and the louds are going to be louder.

potatobroth, regarding your inaudibility on the iPhone, do you maybe have the Volume Limit function turned on?

If you're going to try to do that, you'll probably want to apply some dynamic range compression first.

OT :KMFDM vs underworld web shop

Look at KMFDM. I would venture to say that on a worldwide level, they have a similar level of success, if not LESS so than Underworld.
Yet they have a well-run, user-friendly, consistent web shop that offers fans nearly all of their catalog in physical/digital formats, one-offs, exclusive merch, etc. with (from what I can tell) few complaints.
Maybe it's apples/oranges here, but it IS possible to do this well and it guts me that my favorite group can't seem to get it together.

funny you mention them, i worked on one of their websites
a long time ago, and know the manager and representative
that handles all that.. he's a good friend of mine..
we have a lot of discussions about music, and the future of
digital downloads, etc.. he's a big believer in offering as much
product, and as many formats as possible..(however digital is
taking over)...

their situation is different when it comes to the copyrights, back catalogue
etc... i'm pretty sure that underworld's situation is a lot more complicated..
or they might be in the process of doing it now.. not sure about that..

but yeah, underworld need sto work on it, and get someone in charge
to straighten it out, and finally put some order to it.. i'm sure there
would be a lot of volunteers (or even hire somone! hint hint!)

Do I only get the instant download for wav/mp3 purchase? I'd have thought I'd also get the d/l for buying the physical product.

Listen to more classical music CDs... you will find this to be an attribute of the music and its documentation than a recording flaw.

Wasn't too keen on the folk guitar songs at first, but man are they growing on me. The build up to fast strumming and the energy is really nice.

Also can't seem to get "Lift up your voice and raise your wine to bless the house of Frankenstein" lyrics outta my head! Aaaah!:)

Trent Reznor surely approves of "The Alps" and "Come Scientist Destroy". ;)
I hope Underworld explores this darker side a bit more after all the bubblegum of Barking

Re: Frankenstein - The Album, March 17

Has anyone figured out all of the recycled UW tracks used in the intro track: Overture

Here are my obvious selections... I know there are tons more

at 3:30 - 11 Hundred Hz from RiverRun series- I'm a Big Sister, and I'm a Girl, and I'm a Princess, and this is my Horse

at 11:44 - Cuddle Bunny Vs The Celtic Villages from Oblivion With Bells

at 15:12 - Small Conker And A Twix (or part of Trey's Fate from Sunshine soundtrack)

Other recycled bits from old UW tracks that are now part of the Frankenstein sounds:

the melon man - Mr & Mrs Christmas AKA Distortions - Underworld (Sunshine soundtrack)

choppo - Mr & Mrs Christmas

the girl - Mr & Mrs Christmas

belfort novatel kipper - Mr & Mrs Christmas

Corazon Finds the Seedling - Underworld (Sunshine soundtrack)

At what points do you hear:

the girl
belfort novatel kipper
Corazon Finds the Seedling

?

I'll have to check the timing, but i'm pretty sure i hear them in the overture. Such a mish-mash of UW loops and favorite bits from the full soundtrack.

I had no problems with the download (thanks, UWLive!) and have listened through several times. Excepting the UW influences above, this is very different from previous efforts... even from Breaking and Entering, which was very orgainc-sounding. This has choir, baroche guitar, industrial/noise, orchestral passages...a bit of beat and vox to recall UW but decidedly a departure from what we knw of the band. Excellent, intriguing, engulfing listen.
