Thanks Europium, glad you enjoyed it, and good to know people can still hear the details in there despite it being squished down to 160kbps!

Yes, as far as I can tell, you do need to be signed up to vote... it's quick and easy to do though, and I've not had any spam on the address I gave them when I signed up a few months back.

Do you need to be signed up to beatportal before you can vote on this? Does that mean friends who aren't on can't vote?

Hey man, nice remix! Yea you need to be logged in with you beatport account to vote im afraid. So all you can ask is that you get your mates to join up.

Mine is here http://www.beatportal.com/remix/deta...ack-box-remix/ been breaking my ass trying to get people to vote but like you say the problem is none of my friends have a beatport account so all i can hope is that other people keep the dream alive and I get considered as a top pick from the beatport crew.. but it annoys me when i hear "remixes" that are just new songs with the vocals over the top.. and they do real well.. its a bit depressing.. ah well.. there are some absolutely fantastic remixes in there that deserve a good listen and pretty much all of the Dirty remixes are up there with the best of them!

Cmon People VOTE DIRTY!!!!

Done, had to get onto a real computer to spin the track and press all the buttons.. my phone struggles with even the simplest of web pages!

I quite like the changing chord progression in yours.. really working with the singing.. adds nicely to the original

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

Does anyone know if Joe Bellingham's mix was officially submitted to the competition? I only see a soundcloud link, so there's no way to vote for it yet.

Current chart positions for dirts on page 1 (the top 40):

16th Uncles of Wise
18th Marshall Watson
27th LX Nen
28th Dunwho
34th Buji
39th Unwound Floors

So, we've got nobody in the top 10 'guaranteed a listen by the band' positions, and we have quite a few people not on page 1, who *really* need votes to get that first page exposure that leads to more spins.

Thanks! :)

I didn't start listening to the submitted remixes yet - there was 1 bird in my head for the past 2 weeks, and I definitely need a couple of days without it to make sure I can enjoy them, but I'll spin all the dirty stuff soon (and leave some feedback here, too).

ok both of them spun now too.. were gonna have to get inventive if we want to compete with some of these mixes... its rediculous how some of these top few songs can be called "remixes" some of them are just completely new songs

Oh actually i just thought of something....

We should all start commenting on our songs on the actual site... be real active... if we have comments we will stand out.. so i am going to start leaving comments on everyones songs and hopefully drive some new interest... itd be great if everyone else here does the same!

EDIT: Shit my bad its not possible! how crap is that!?

Sadly, comments are disabled for individual mixes. The only place to connect with other remixers is in the discussion on the competition rules, here: http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item/...remix-contest/ - I think I've picked up a few spins that way already :-)

Thanks to everyone who spun my mix: I am on the main page!

If you haven't checked it out yet, please do, and PM or leave me your remarks. Thanks.

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

...and I couldn't agree more with the sentiment about what constitutes a remix.
Some of the tracks (in the top 10, even) are clearly original productions that someone pasted the Bird 1 vocal hook over. I guess its a nice way to draw a little attention to an original artist work that might not otherwise get any. While a few are indeed nice productions, I am disappointed to hear these kinds of tracks passed as remixes. I want the flavor, the groove, something of the original...
...and, please, tempo match/sync your loops.

They can't all be great, i suppose, but I sure hope the cream floats to the top before the 16th.

Please excuse my minor ranting. The dirty mixes are killer, and I am disappointed that they aren't yet taking the top spots.

I'll do my part with the "Spin it" button.

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

I doubt very seriously any dirts are going to even come close to winning. The top picks all have massive amounts of spins. Maybe we should create 10 gmail accounts each, register 10 diff. accts to beatport and use those to increase the spins on the dirty submissions. That's the only way anyone from here will get close. The gap is too big already to close. Your casual friends will click a link to press play but they're not going to register on the website just to click play again.

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

It's not as bad as it looks, the ones that get judged are the top 10 most spins after 2 weeks, plus 10 picked by the staff. I think Beatport know they have a problem with 'ballot-stuffing' (actually, it's bleedin' obvious when someone has 41 spins but the track has only been played 27 times!), which is why the 3 big prizes are not awarded on number of spins, there's just a small $50 prize for that.

If you look through the other contests that have closed, they nearly always say that the top prize winner wasn't the one with the most spins, so I think we just have to aim for the front page, where we stand a decent chance of spicking up votes from in dependent people, and of being picked by the editorial team on quality... because having heard about 50 or 60 so far, I can say that the Dirty mixes do stand out on quality!

reactorstudios 11-03-2010 09:02 AM

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

It looks like the guy that won the Kaskade competition had only a single spin and was plucked from the bottom of the list by the Beatport editors for inclusion in the twenty that went on to Kaskade for review.
While it's great to be at the top of the list, I think talent will stand out in the end.

There is just a lot of talent in the pool. I think I counted 318 mixes submitted.

I've already spun yours, Timsk :-)

Sad to see three fairly unexciting mixes high up the list with more spins than plays... if you're going to turn it into a popularity contest (and let's face it, a lot of this is so far), at least try not to be too obvious about it?

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

I have done a little investigation and as if to confirm the obvious...

I googled "bird1 - (DeadHouse Remix)" as a tester...and also the same with "Bird 1 (Nas1 Remix)" (including the quote marks to make sure just that phrase was used)

Both times the only thing that came up was the remix on beatportal itself.. and a link to their soundclouds.. (uploading it on any other place is not allowed but clearly the rules are irrelevant)

interestingly Deadhouse has only 58 followers on soundcloud.. a few plays maybe 49... its not like this guy has a huge fanbase! andwhen i refreshed the beatportal page after 5 mins he suddenly had 5 more spins...

its just a bit silly really.. and i know i went to a lot of trouble to confirm the obvious but I had to be sure

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

I wouldn't worry to much about those guys at the very top. Quite frankly, the mixes just aren't very impressive and it is painfully obvious that they are gaming the system. ...and for a $50 top spot prize. Not worth it, really. The real prize is getting your mix in the top twenty, and heard by UW themselves. Winning the whole thing is a nice extra. Yes, a couple of dopes will steal as many as ten of the twenty spots, but that still leaves ten spots for the talent among us. I'd rather be in the talented 10 than the 'popular' ten.

That being said, please spin the hell out of my mix. Legitimate attention feels good.
I am also in this mainly for the feedback I hoped to elicit from the lot of you. It's my first completed production, after a dozen years of piddling, and I'd love to hear where you think I'd be wise to direct my attention in the future. Areas to improve?

Thanks, again.

Wow – have to say I like this almost as much as (or possibly more than, depending on mood) the original. Nice work!

Whether or not it wins, I'd love a copy for listening. :)

Hopefully UW will get a chance to give it a spin – one of the very few remixes that's actually a substantively new take on the song.

shame the decent mixes are not top of the 'spins'

Re: VOTE DIRTY: Dirty Beatport Remix Submissions: voting period is 2nd-16th November

I submitted a mix hoping for some feedback, and I figured I shouldn't expect any without being prepared to offer a little. After a few days away from the song entirely, here is my collected feedback on the dirty mixes. I tried to offer the good with a little (nit-picky) criticism, as I'd hope to receive in return. I am certainly not a pro, so take my opinions for what you will.
Thanks to everyone that submitted. My own skill set is improving just listening to all the other works. Thanks for the ideas and continued inspiration.

Buji
Synthpop. Killer. This needs Andy Bell or Neil Tennant dropping some oohs and ahhs in the background. Damn that was fun.
I might have dried up the vocal just a bit to give it some pop. ...but I'll just shut up and dance.

LX nen
The opening pad feels like it is gonna lead us into Madonna's Rain (!).........yeah, guilty pleasure.
I love the very UW-ish groove throughout the song. Very, very beautiful take on the track. I can hear the vocal EFX track low in the mix, and I'd love to hear that brought forward more with the main verse vocal dropped entirely. The refrain vocal locks beautifully into your groove, but the verses don't sit quite as well for me. It's tough to remove the drive from the original vocal phrasing, and your mix is too wonderfully chilled-out for those advancing verses. Your treatment of the OSCar lead is fantastic. Brilliant transformation of the track.

Marshall Watson
Another nice job of sneaking the OSCar in the mix without it smacking us in the face. I love the FM that invades the otherwise smooth and round bassline in the track's breakdown. Great to hear all seven stems in the mix, manipulated into a completely different groove. This track just works. Blown away.

In The Black Box
That main gritty synth reminds me of a Gearwhore track or two. Nice use of the robotic vocal as a lead-in to this section.
I could move to this in a very dark club in the deep, dead of night. This a "louder is better" track. The arrangement offers a few nice surprises; I guessed wrong on the direction of this one a few times as it played out. This stays true to all that I love about Dave's radio show. Well done sir.

Autoimmunity
Oooh. I like that flamming cymbal at the intro, and the really hollow kick. I don't love the spoken word bit because it doesn't sit in the mix quite right, but I like where it is in the arrangement. The glassy bell tones really make this a wonderfully eerie track.

JoeBellingham
I am digging the mellow vibe. I think you landed right in the early-underworld groove you were aiming for. I am missing that one extra layer that makes me want to hang around for the entire track, though. I feel a bit like I've taken it all in at the halfway point. Of course, If I were just chillin' on the couch with the lights down low, I'd gladly groove on this for a half hour. I guess it just depends on the mood.

Blue Smoke
You've tracked some great parts here, particularly that mildly squelchy bass line, and the chord changes suprised me (wonderfully) in places. I am a little lost in the mix on this one, though. The vocal seems too low and distant, and at times the bass, pad, and accent synths begin to compete for the same space. The bass could stand to go down a dB or two, and I think an alternate mix where only one component is truly in focus at any given time would really firm up what is a great track.
I struggled mightily with mixing my own track, since I had never done so before. I read in a manual somewhere that always having a single element in focus, and only one element in focus, is key to a great mix. I am simplifying a bit, but it really helped me to understand where to pull things up, and push them back throughout a mix, to keep it interesting. Of course, I have no idea whether or not I was succesful...

Invasion
This one feels so familiar. Whoever put this together just gets me;)

Soccermomsfix
I wasn't aware there was a class of music geared towards soccer moms ;)
I love the classic surging bass tone. There are a lot of great sounds playing here, but there's no real focus and somethings not gelling for me. Everything seems to be happening all at the same time. Maybe a little ebb and flow... I feel like you could take the vocal out altogether and it would be a step above.

Defrost
I love the ominous, cinematic build. I wish the vocal sat a little more in the mix, rather than on it, in the early parts. Almost an Aphex Twin sort of vibe to pieces of this one. Then it goes NIN in the middle. I didn't think this song could be made creepy. I am impressed.

Phaseblue
I like the isolated "time" sample in the intro. The drums, particularly the "laser" percussion are beautifully programmed and show great restraint. The pad that hits about 2/3 of the way in feels like the payoff that the track builds to, but I am left wanting a bit more from it.
