Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
barking version 2...
its certainly very good to have but it certainly sounds 'unfinished' i like to hear how the tracks have evolved but i kinda want more, and feel that the standard version gives that 'more' its empty for me, only the version of grace is as good, i certainly won't be spinning this as much and as often as the official released album. i like the raw version of Diamond Jigsaw but really wished that either version had those synth stabs we heard on the live version... Hamburg Hotel Essex - reminds me of the dobrapet mix of Bruce Lee, its shorter here and better for it. sorry UW i don't like it or understand it tbh... and the vocaless versions of the other tracks are simply, for me incomplete... i love Karls voice / Danielle's 'singing' alternatives and demos - all for them, but this certainly isn't what i'd have wanted on the final album - glad the guys plumped for production guidance, not that they can't do it on their own, 7 albums of self made music is testament to that... its just a refreshing change and better for it. IMO |

based on the youtube sampler of cd2, I think rick picked out the tracks that were very similar to the tracks that were on cd1, but just better produced. I think its a way of making the actual album seem better, so in a way it is insulting to the fans, cause we have heard better versions live/demoed/etc than on cd2 |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
CD2 is just a collection of different versions. If they are better or worse than other versions we've heard in the past has a lot to do with personal preference.
The good thing is that from the broadcasts, live shows, etc, we have a lot of versions that we have access to. CD2 just adds to this choice. |

Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
any chance someone could hook me up with a (some what) low-quality rip of cd 2?
I bought the super deluxe limited edition package... but it was before I moved to Glasgow (from the US) so the box is just sitting at my parents' house* until I get back - which won't be for some time! ...I say "some what low-quality rip" b/c I am still doing pay-as-you-go internet, as my bank account is taking aaaaages to get set-up. So if some one could give me aac files, that would be much appreciated. *or at least it SHOULD BE |

The point is if you give a very rough version that is similar to the final, the shiny sparkling version will look better. I have seen many fine art documentaries that always show this. |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
I've got the LTD edition ordered and on the way but I just (maybe stupidly?) bought the itunes bonus track You Do Scribble (Abbey Road Version). Is this going to be the same version that appears on the alt. versions disc?

Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
I haven't received a shipping email or anything. are they sending out shipping emails? i still have this fear that the order didn't go thru.

This is probably one of those only the poster can hear it things
but take a listen to Mmm Skyscraper I Love You (Live Jam) from Lemonworld Broadcast 2006-05-13 - round about the 6 minute mark. the bits that aren't traditionally there. take a listen to the start of Always Loved A Film (Lemonworld Mix) similar, or do io need coffee? |

Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
The demo version of Diamond Jigsaw on the Barking bonus disc is, as Karl said, NOTHING like Underworld. No synths, just guitar, rock drum sounds and Karl's singing. It's a fun, upbeat little ditty but definitely not Underworld.
I like PVD's remix a lot but I'm afraid the awesome synthpop version from the Las Vegas show will remain the best version of this divisive Underworld track. Similarly, the version of "Moon in Water" that we first heard during a radio broadcast was incalculably better than the version found on the bonus disc, and arguably better than High Contrast's version. The same can be said for the early versions of Always Loved a Film. I think Rick should accept that he can nail a track sooner than he thinks! Diamond Jigsaw, ALAF, Moon in Water, You Do Scribble.... |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
YDS is great to have in these two forms. Oddly enough, the catchiness of Scribble does get stuck in my head and i end up singing it even though I don't really like it.
Both YDS and YDS (Abbey Road) are FANTASTIC. Great additions to this release. Strumpet is okay. Kinda miss the "gets much better" piece from the electraglide show so many years back. All in all, its like a fantastic release of Bsides. Love it. |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
OK, I know we don't want to do this, but I'm gonna have to agree with whoever said Grace (Telematic Peal Mix) is the better version. It's pretty great. The album version is great too, but something more Underworld about the alt.

Seems to be the case for 2008 live Strumpet, too. Bird 1 is good, a stand out track on Barking, but those darn synth plops have me liking the live version of Strumpet a bit more. |

Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
I listened to the samples of the alternate takes, and I glad that the differences between the demos and the final produced versions are minimal. The biggest differences are Scribble and ALAF, but the final versions are better, luckily.
So if the differences so minimal, I don't know why needed the producers. |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
Strumpet Groove and Bird 1 are pretty different.

Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
LOVE Hamburg Hotel Essex. So much better.

Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
Got my box set yesterday...it's something pretty, and I love all of the notes on each song. The note to the fans at the start is cool. This thing was clearly made for the fans on Dirty.
Whoever said this was an "insult to the fans" is an idiot. |

I just love the fact that the songs on the DVD are different even from disc 2. So it's like we have 3 different versions of the trax. ROCK on.

holy fuck why did no one say that 'kipper' made it onto 'strumpet'
christ that made my day. |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
Just picked it up. I guess I can't say it's really something I'm going to listen to much. I'm not sure what they were going for (or if they even put too much thought into it). I was really hoping that we'd get the same tracks we've heard live or during the Lemonworld broadcasts but cleaned up...it looks like most of these are new takes (to us) but not as good as the stuff I was hoping for. Track by track:
1. Strumpet Groove: Not as good as the live Strumpet we've heard, sounds just like an unfinished take 2. ALAF: Not as good as the live ALAF we've heard from the same show (one of the Brixton discs), where are the vocals? 3: YDS: Cool, but again where are the vocals? I have been waiting 5 years for a studio version of this but the vocals were, to me, what truly put this song above and beyond. 4. Hamburg Hotel Essex: Interesting, but like the album version kind of unfinished 5. Grace: Good, but I preferred the disc 1 version, didn't sound at all like the "Telematic Peal" that we got in the broadcast before. 6. Between Stars: Decent demo version of the album track (which I loved). Not much to say here. 7. Diamond Jigsaw: On one hand, I think it's great how much this sounds like an early (mk1-era!) demo track, still a great song, and it is charming. On the other hand, I really was hoping for something with the synths that we heard live, that was my favorite part of the song, so this is a real disappointment. 8. Moon in Water: Loved the broadcast version we had, this is kind of the same but with harder beats, but the computer vocal (which I really liked) doesn't appear until the very end...wish we could get a high quality recording of the broadcast 9. Louisiana: Basically just the first two minutes of the disc 1 version, not much to say. I don't think it's an "insult to the fans" or anything, but I did find it kind of curious. It's cool to have another version of all these tracks (so for most of them, I have at least 3 now) but these are generally the mixes that I won't listen to much. The earlier demos we heard are better, even if they are in 96kbps or on a bootleg, and unlike most of you guys, I think the actual Barking album was great. I just wonder if they really cared too much about the quality of disc 2. Just saying, if I had it to do all over again, I wouldn't have gone for the box set just for the second disc (the package as a whole is still amazing). |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
Only had a quick listen, but they sound like demo versions. An interesting note (kind of like the Beatles Anthologies). Not as polished as some of the broadcast versions or live versions but still nice to have.
Having the album version of Moon in Water and the broadcast version with the computer voice works for me. As does having the album version and the Las Vegas version of Diamond Jigsaw. |
Re: Barking - The Alternative Versions (AKA CD2)
A quick quastion. Are all the alternative versions without the producers? So just Karl and Smith?
Because a lot of tracks are almost sound like the album versions, with little differences. |

Unrelated to the general what version is superior thread, here's some cover art I put together for the Alternative Versions disc for my iTunes cover flow...

Barking: The Alternate Versions (Disc 2)
Having received my deluxe edition in the mail 2 mornings ago, I have played the hell out of it since, watched the included DVD, and made it to Disc 2 yesterday; and boy, what a day!
I like Disc 2 better than I like Disc 1, if that's a bad thing or not, I'm not sure, but it doesn't matter because it's all damn good music. and I've listened to You Do Scribble more than any of the others so far. I don't know if this is High Contrast more than Underworld, but I like it a lot. this sounds cheesy, but I don't think electronic music will ever be the same (in a two fold way). |
Re: Barking: The Alternate Versions (Disc 2)
I think YDS doesn't have High Contrast at all...
|
Re: Barking: The Alternate Versions (Disc 2)
You Do Scribble is Underworld. Scribble is Underworld buried beneath High Contrast.
I've made 'my version' of the album, which runs a little like this: Bird 1 Always Loved A Film You Do Scribble Hamburg Hotel Essex Grace (Telematic Peal) Between Stars (Lemonworld Mix) Simple Peal Diamond Jigsaw Louisiana Which puts together my favourite versions of the tracks from those available, plus I've got rid of Moon In Water, which I only seem to like the version we heard years ago of, and replaced it by putting Simple Peal in, which makes Diamond Jigsaw seem even more lively and uplifting when it comes afterwards. I've only left in three collaborations, it seems. |
Re: Barking: The Alternate Versions (Disc 2)
My box set FINALLY showed up yesterday (thanks to Om shipping via Media Mail).
I'm surprised no one has mentioned that "Kippers" shows up in "Strumpet Groove" starting at 4:30. |
