1) optimized browsers
2) message boards don't often display blocks of text, they display single lines with tons of white-space.
3) header bars, icons, dates, etc just add to an eye strain on a white background. it's a usability nono for message boards.

Look at a text-editor like MSWord and then this forum. You can't honestly tell me that it gives off the same eye strain.

I'm being dead honest, and not whiny, but I have a very hard time reading this forum now because of the white. I TOTALLY appreciate the work that went into changing it, and love that its all in one place now, but to me, this site is first and foremost a forum -- and one that I've been using for ~10 years.

it's decent. i think it's a good idea to incorporate the different sources and make it more of a centralized place...they way it actually used to be.

the white is fine with me. what is it with you guys complaining about black text on white background? do you have your text editors and pdf viewers inverted as well? because the last time i checked it's pretty much the same....and nobody complains about google or the new york times being hard on the eyes either....maybe you should optimize your screens.

anyhoo, well done.

but you should definitely clean up the source code. because 115 errors is a lot. and most of it can be easily fixed.

hey eik thanks for the troll and the criticism. we'll fix the errors asap, and we are discussing a variation on a brown theme which may or may not happen. if anyone else has any suggestions then make a note of them and we'll try to take them onboard.

yeah, i'm supposed to update the icons asap, hope to have that sorted out this weekend.

PLEASE, if you see something unusual (bugs and such) or weird stuff on the style of the forum (excepting the 'it's not brown' thing), send me a PM.

the images used for the header and footer are here: http://www.borndirty.org/2010/09/pro...e-do-scribble/ - this project is still going if anyone wants to donate images ;)

There was that temporary forum once, at a different URL, some years back, a restart that went wrong. It had a different colour theme (guess if some users "wanted back the brown"...). Dark blue, red and white maybe? I seem to remember to have liked it. Could I be any more vague?

I'm not a fanatic advocate of the brown theme, but I, too, find that much white hard on the eyes. Therefore, some colour would be highly appreciated.

Apart from that: Brilliant job on the overall design and graphics. Like it more and more. Thanks to everyone involved.

I like the change and the structural movement from unofficial 'official' to official official.

I am going to be one of those erudite individuals who has always liked, and admired the choice of brown as a forum background. It's always been the opposite of every other forum I've frequented over the years and the color served to reinforce the messages being displayed, not distract from them.

Just a thought on bringing back the brown.

Otherwise, good work.

Thanks for all your hard work on this, guys. The brown served us well but it was time for a change. The header looks great.

So how official is "official?"

Re: Welcome to Born Dirty

I would have only one suggestion. . . tighten up the white space. In 1280x1024, almost half of the vertical page layout is header, navigation, and menu. This, in my opinion, should take up (at most) 15% of a page.

Perhaps the contents of "header_bar_1" and "header_bar_4" could be rendered vertically in a div down the left side of the page.

Besides that, I love it. Nice job!!!

Today, the font size and face for posts on the forum has gone back to what it was on the old forum. For some reason, that makes it a lot more readable for me. Anyone else feel that way too?

Nicely done guys!

For a fun look through the years:

http://web.archive.org/web/199902080...p://dirty.org/ (1999-2000)
http://web.archive.org/web/200105091...www.dirty.org/ (2000-2001)
http://web.archive.org/web/200211212...www.dirty.org/ (2002-2004)
http://web.archive.org/web/200501020...www.dirty.org/ (2005-2005)
http://web.archive.org/web/200512110...www.dirty.org/ (2005-2007)

There were a couple of other designs that unfortunately do not seem to have been archived. There was a very cool one prior to 1999 that I seem to have lost forever. Between Brown and Yannick's first site in 2002 there was another we had as well that had much popping up, abstract fun and suggestive images. I'll post some of that stuff one day if I can find it.

Re: Welcome to Born Dirty

That's nice to hear, because I made it, it got caught on a local radio station, where someone was listening to, which gave me a job, which gave me 3 years of working experience while my peers went to college right before and during the dotcom bubble burst, and basically is the basis of my current professional life :).

One could claim that basis is actually me playing Wolfenstein 3D with a friend who had a computer while in highschool, but hey :P.

The experience of working with this Dirty stuff inspired me to get off the path in life I was on and get involved with something creative. It had a massive impact on my success in life.

That is excellent to read! =]

Same here. I started doing photoshop duels with fellow dirts - sharpening my creative skils, and ended up landing a job in a more creative field than I was working in. I'm still friends with all of those dirts today some 8-10 years later.

Re: Welcome to Born Dirty

nice work on the new site people. I like it mostly. Yeah the white could be a bit less... white (the box I'm typing this in is sort of grey, which is already better).
Also can we get something along the line of the new icons for the top navigation bar? The nav bar looks pretty bland right now and sorta ugly with that grey gradient but those icons are pretty groovy.
News page looks a bit messy and there doesn't really seem to be a consistent look troughout the site (yet?) with some weird illustrated icons on the right side of the site pages that don't seem to fit with the rest of the look (megaphone, speech bubbles, blue cartoon bird) and some of the header text (like I SAW A MAN on the news page) that seems to be badly aliased (maybe a browser thing? Looks the same in Firefox and Chrome though). And perhaps the underworld social media links should be at the top of the site (perhaps next to the RSS feed button) rather than hidden away at the bottom, since they seem to be more and more important for people following and interacting with the band.
