Re: Paul Van Dyk is a piece of shit. Will he ruin Diamond Jigsaw?

I label what's gone on in this thread more as an educated or informed guess. Aka, based on a degree of experience, knowledge or information. We have all heard Paul Van Dyk before and it appears nobody has enjoyed what they've heard. If you know you don't like pickles, yet you love ice cream, you can be pretty sure you're not going to like pickles on your ice cream. Then again, maybe there's something unique about the combination that will surprise you.

No more dross in here than people going "this will be great!" in the main album thread. It's all uninformed, but we've gotta talk about something! :P

Why is this so negative? I hate to see this on an UW forum calling PVD a piece of shit.

UW chose to collaborate with him so respect their taste and decision.

Personally I like a few of PvD's older tracks and love the entire record Out There And Back. I take it for what it is which to me is finely crafted POPULAR TRANCE music. I have some great social memories to it.

Judging from UW's posted links to YouTube songs, they don't discriminate too much but are open to music everything from technical proficiency to goofy fun that fits in a random social context.

I am excited for the UW PVD collaboration! Although I wouldn't trust PVD for quality, I trust UW and their ability to bring out the best in others.

Me too! Though I haven't listened to it for about 7-8 years, I have really fond memories of OTaB. Just digging it out of my mp3 collection now, there's a bit of cheese factor to it nowadays but tracks like Vega and Travelling are still tops in my book. Judging by this thread, admitting that has probably ruined any chance of me ever sounding credible again. :p

As for the UW/PvD collaboration, well, I'm just going to have to reserve judgement until I actually hear something.

I'm not at all familiar with Paul Van Dyke beyond the fact that loads of awful ravers seem to love him. But if he's all about the cheese then I think he'd probably be good for Diamond Jigsaw. Then again, I thought Diamond Jigsaw was great the way it is when I heard it in Las Vegas. Vintage, earnest synthpop -- frankly, the kind I don't think Underworld ever created properly when they were a synthpop band. I hope PVD doesn't rave it up too much.

Re-contextualizing will not change anything. If UW want us to be early adopters they should release the 5 song sampler, et al now. If not... good luck. Their ego will let us know, as well as the world (how superficial they are, i.e., we need acknowledge from the younger fan base). FU to all those trying to kiss the proverbial UW ass.

it probably isn't  but 'moderator' certainly implies an amount of 'moderation', and the title (before hilarious change) of the thread was artless, witless and offensive - certainly an anomaly (and definitely condisering the bono/cock hoo-haa). otherwise, what's a moderator doing, apart from having more access rights?

all i can make out is the general melody of Karl's singing. Audio's so overdriven, i'm not sure one can tell what's new or different in the song.
Cool video, though.

Nice find with the video! It's hard to form an opinion with the quality of the sound, but I can safely say that it still sounds good. Recruiting PVD to play around with the track might actually work out for the better.

yea - and it seems like there might be more synths through the beats... which is nice, b/c the recording I've got of the original seems kind of ...sparse. Also those dated synth stabs seem to be less prominent, which is a HUGE plus

I am now just setting my expectations extremely low for Diamond Jiggy.

That way I hope I will be very pleasantly surprised! ;)

i just noticed that there are a bunch of empty spaces for forums (ie: the last forum is #26, but there aren't that many forums). Can there be an invisible forum that you can access if you know the address? for some reason that seems like it would be neat. we can call it subdirty or something.

listening to the newer BT stuff i'd like UW to have worked with him also... there are so many good producers out there PVD included, i suspect their choice was extensive....

you can't please everyone...

but PVD has a bazillion fans so his touch should be rewarding for UW....

The finished version is a lot more grittier than the other live versions I've heard, and to me much better. Here's hoping Karl rocking it out on the guitar is in the studio version as well. :)

No worries! If you want the audio ripped straight from the original vid (I assume it may have degraded in quality while being resized, then upped to YT) let me know, and I'll get it done :)

Yeah, that was my favourite bit too.

Although I think it was more like Prince's I Wanna Be Your Lover.

Hahahaha, Van Halen synth... so true. I wouldn't say the synth was my favorite part of the track but it's what made it memorable. I also hope there's more guitars on it for the album version.

Maybe many of the versions we know were post-collaborations. We have no idea when the collaborations took place in the process.

The ultimate bonus version of barking would contain a "making of..." dvd. Don't you agree?

Re: Paul Van Dyk is a musical genius. How amazing will he make Diamond Jigsaw?

Doesn't nearly have the sound I was fearing. Overall I think I appreciate his delicate touch more than what Ramirez/Knight did. My biggest complaint on the whole album is the quality of the kicks and simplicity of the rhythms on Diamond Jigsaw, Between Stars and ALAF. It proves how good Rick Smith is at the little details and how downright boring PVD and Knight/Ramirez are with tech-house kick drum programming.
