Basically we're talking about lots of prep on the original artists' part, 500+ mb of audio to transfer and then the actual remixing. I don't know if everyone would follow through, but I'd be willing to remain cautiously optimistic.

It's definitely an interesting idea. My biggest hesitation is that I have kind of a lot on my musical plate (self-imposed) right now since I'm kind of immersed in working on an album. But sometimes remixes come very quickly, so who knows? As for breaking down the track into it's individual elements, it would be easy for me to do in Reason with the way I work. And transfering files isn't so bad these days with sites like mediafire and the like.

So my vote is that i'm absolutely open to discussing it further as soon as we're done with the initial compilation.

So, how is producing going for you guys? Any progress on the remix idea?

I've got a track to contribute already:

http://www.tfhats.com/e107_plugins/f...ty%20check.mp3

Trackname: Reality check
Artist: Klique Elektronikue (side project of Tin Foil Hats)
Gear used: Roland SH101, Roland Juno60, Korg MS2000, Casio CZ5000
Mixed in: Ableton live.

But I'm still letting the project name inspire me, so I might contribute a second track.

I really enjoyed this track, Camiel Toe! So many great elements that combine in a powerful way.

Waiting for the cooler weather and a break from the schedule to inspire me for a track. In the meantime, i've got a wedding and honeymoon to enjoy. Mid October - i'll be back in the studio.

Nice retro sound in this track. And it definitely has that wintery feel to it. Very nice!

And I'm still going to have to wait and see if I have time to participate in a remix project of tracks from this compilation. We'll see.

Thanks guys. This side project is somehow a muse for me. I've got a lot of inspiration.

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Good to see this happening again. This might work well into a column for some of the street press I write for. A rich community like this yielding a "project" outcome year after year. It's great to see/hear. I remember Leo asking me to finish a Segue tune of ours in previous years, but never got around to it. The track we had in mind ended up getting released as a single anyway, so this at least got us in the right direction.

In terms of technicalities of file transfer, as mentioned Dropbox is a great resource. I've been working on a collaborative project, under the obvious enough name of Vitreous & Segue. Vitreous lives in Amsterdam, and I live in Brisbane, Australia. We tested various ways to transfer files and the best way would be using the same project file synchronised on our hard drives via Dropbox. Having said that, we tend to just render stems and use Drop.io to transfer. We upload rough mixes to Soundcloud under Private Mode, which lets us leave comments all over them, and the final mixes are put on for the record label there also.

All that, and I neglect my own FTP server. Some of this social media stuff is actually more useful than a simple FTP, but there's always that as well. Anyway, hope to hear some Dirty tunes soon! :)

Submission Deadline (For Now!): Late October 09

Bump it Up!

How's everyone's track progressing? Is the end of the month still feasible?

I just returned from 10-days in Europe, and as always when i travel abroad, i come back musically recharged. Starting work this weekend on what i hope will be a unique, wintry track.;)

I have got a few tracks I have been working on for this which are almost finished! So will make the deadline.

Do we have anyone up for the artwork?

holden 10-11-2009 03:16 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

i can give the artwork a whirl (though it's a bit hard to find wintry inspiration in Houston, Texas! Probably will dig through the archives or draw something from scratch).

Looking forward to another fun, eclectic collaboration!

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Ok, so I'm rounding third and heading for home here, so to speak. All i got left is vocals, bass and 32 bars of lead guitar that I'm going to call in some favors for.

Just to be clear though -- this track is a knives-out, screaming shoegaze track. Does anyone care? Can't imagine what it will do to continuity if the rest of you turn in more electronic pieces.

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Don't worry about the songs style I think the comp will be better for having a mix of styles and sounds.

hello boyos.

as usual, i'm doing my semi-yearly check-in on dirty, and i'm glad to see that everyone's talking about another dirty compilation.

i'd be in, and of course willing to code up and host the site when all is done, per usual.

you guys can email / PM me with questions or if things get close to being done and i'm not around, as i don't visit as much as i used to, unfortunately.

hope all is well,
cheers,
c

I have a track pretty much ready to go that I'll be submitting. It's a work in progress version of a song I'm doing for the album I'm working on, so it'll be a little short, but I like where it's at. So yeah, I'm still in.

Great stuff, Camiel!

Glad there's still energy and enthusiasm about this!

I'll get some work done on my track and maybe some artwork today.

Maus, thanks for checking in, man. Great to hear you'll host the tracks- -it's nice to have them all in one place along with the 2007 and 2008 comps.

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Thanks a lot Holden. I've updated the track now. I reckon that for the final compilation I need to upload a version with a higher mp3 quality I guess. This one is only downloadable at 128 kbps.

I'm running a bit behind on this, been having a hard time getting someone over to record some guitar bits. I'm not decided on how many unfinished details I'm willing to let go for the sake of making the deadline, so I guess I'll just keep plugging away and if I make it cool, if not then I'll share it with yas when it's done :)

I have a track basically ready to go. Should I just post a link here, or should I send it to someone specific? Maybe Mike since he said he could host the compilation (thanks Mike!:D), or is someone looking to kind of master this whole thing so we have consistent volumes and such?

Yeah if you want to throw it my way, i can stick it up on dirtyradio at least to get people's reactions and stuff.

if you want, you can send me the files and i'll master them for you. i'm about to move, but someone hit me up via email. shane@marshallwatson.net. if you are quick about it, I can do it in the next two days. Otherwise, I can do it when I get set up in San Francisco; after this weekend. Either way, I'm happy to do it. Just let me know.

Some kind offers on the table here!

Goin through the messages and if no one minds, shall we play it like this:-

Maus - to host a page again as of previous years (would be very kind!)

Holden - to supply artwork

Mike - to feature the comp on Dirty Radio (would be very kind!)

Marshall - to master the comp if he don't mind.

Comp title - 'Sweet in Winter, Sweet in Rain'

If we aim to get tracks in by next weekend initially and if anyone is pushed for time still have another week after to get them in if needed!

All this can change obviously just a suggestion to tie things together!

Cheers,
Jez.

Suggestions welcome!

i'm shutting down the studio for a couple of weeks. i'll be in comunication with laptop, but wont' have access to machinery. if this timeline works, I can help out. If not, I pass the torch.

Buji 10-28-2009 10:40 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

That would probably work out ok, gives everyone a couple of weeks to get tracks in.
Would you want us to email the tracks over direct to you as mp3's or download links to wav files for mastering?

Holden, the artwork looks cool, I was not sure if the font at the top looks right or not, I am no artist so don't hold me to this! Nice work mate.

Sean 10-28-2009 12:21 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Sent an mp3 of my track to Mike yesterday, and he was kind enough to put it up on dirtyRadio for the time being. You can check it out here.

I can make the WAV version of the track available to whoever ends up doing the compilation mastering as well (thanks for the offer, Prof). Just let me know and I'll upload and send the link.

Professor 10-28-2009 03:45 PM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Wave files would be best, but very high quality mp3 will work too. Nothing lower than 320 please. I'd say, sendspace them to me to my email account. shane@marshallwatson.net

No problem - i'll change it! Was looking for something "handwritten", but this is a bit too precious, too Greeting Card, i'll admit!

Thanks Prof, for the mastering assistance! My track's forthcoming

Camiel 10-29-2009 02:05 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Prof, I'll send you my track tonight. Cheers! One thing I wonder, I've done some mastering myself on it, but I guess that you only want to receive the endmix for some more headroom?

Professor 10-29-2009 09:05 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

the raw final stereo mix is best... no limiting, or maximizing. but if you have already done irreversible processing, no worries.

Sean 10-29-2009 10:46 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

Mine's actually already mastered as well. When I asked about mastering for the comp, I was really just thinking along the lines of all the tracks being brought to a consistent volume and such, so we didn't end up with a super loud track that's followed by a super quiet one, etc. What do you folks think? Did you want deeper consistent mastering of the tracks than that? They're usually all such different sounds and genres that I would imagine it would be really difficult to do too much of that.

Professor 10-29-2009 11:53 AM

Re: Dirty compilation 2009

yeah, all i was going to do was make a consistent volume--maybe overall eq.

Will give the artwork another go soon - fix that font. But i kind of like the smoky/icy photo as is - anyone feel strongly that it needs changed?

My track is pretty much finished, sent off to Professor for mastering.
It's entitled "Eponine's Walk" by Mental Health Consumer.

You can take a listen here:
http://www.myspace.com/avidtechnology

Named in honor of the character from "Les Miserables". An earlier version appeared on a netlabel release, but this is a pretty extensive overhaul in the spirit of winter and rain. Etc.

I like the image a lot. But yeah, I do agree about the font. It's the right idea - that loose, hand-written feel. But as you said, it's a bit "greeting card". Great cover overall though. Nice work, and thanks! :D
