Re: When religion and school uniform collide
SHE GETS TO HAVE A BRACELET WHY CANT I HAVE ONE
because it's part of her religion, dear OMG THATS NOT EVEN FAIR SHE GETS TO HAVE EXCEPTIONS JUST BECAUSE MINE DOESNT INVOLVE BRACELETS WTF now wait a min- WTF WTF WTF UNFAIR I WANNA WEAR STUFF I WANNA BE PRETTY WHY CANT I ok ok fine NO JEWELERY EVER AT ALL I DONT CARE IF ITS IMPORTANT GODDAMN IT THESE PEOPLE HAVE TO BE KEPT HAPPY JESUS CHRIST THEYRE MORE SENSITIVE THAN A BARFLY ABOUT AFFIRMATIVE ACTION HALP is basically what im reading. i get the strong notion that a lot of the scaremongering element in england (UK in general?) revolves around white people getting shafted so that muslims and immigrants in general get "special permission" to do things they cant. people get unusually touchy so the reaction is to just ban it for everyone. as the overall national tone for the states, complaints about immigration are usually reserved for type-a assholes and muslim sensitivity has been on a steady decline since 9/11, and school districts have been better about it than most. living in a california town i can tell you that if schools here pitched a fit of wierdness and banned jewelry then three scenarios might happen if religious obligation came into play 1. everyone ignores it. it's assumed (if you're wearing some other, more obvious signifier that can be assumed from) that it's a religious thing you dont understand and who cares this jewelry ban is stupid anyway... 2. there's rumblings about it in-school (because we're all selfish bitches at the end of the day) until the school releases a statement to us, the schools, and the parents making an amendment for religious instances, with much hullabaloo about respect and understanding 3. school comes down like this instance. a stink is made. friends rally. parents get involved. it becomes an event that gets in the papers and most everyone you talk to would be confused as to why this is a big deal and just let her wear it for chrissakes. school apologizes for undue haste and draconian manner. jewelry ban is lifted or drastically amended. |

Re: When religion and school uniform collide
yeah i almost put in "uk" just to cover my bases because i couldnt remember offhand where the school was, but i wanted to keep my train of thought rolling, and i also didnt want to lump in the rest of the uk along with what i understood to be largely a british thing and not by default applicable to the rest of the uk, even though you're all neighbors and affect each other in that way.

I thought you'd have an EU passport? I'm in NZ - so my passport is pretty good for most anywhere. |
