Do you have better than 112kbps versions available? I'm listening to them now and like 'em quite a bit...but they won't sound too great in my car stereo, so if you've got higher quality ones I'm definetely insterested!

well, UW uses a piece of their songs on other songs almost consistently - you can pick out many parts of songs as you go thru them, such as "Tin There", which is not so much a remix of pearl's girl, as much as a re-do, and has a lot of pieces of PG in it. They use the same ride cymbal tempo a lot- and of course their arpeggios are quite often a bit the same, though with changed sounds/more filter/etc.

I think that also when you make electronic music - and I'm sure some of you can back me up here - you end up re-using things because sometimes it's just too much to be coming up with a brand-new drum piece and everything else every time. I mean, let's face it, a lot of "traditional" music uses the same pieces all the time, it's the structure and melody which give a song it's new face. How many punk songs have the exact same drum phrasing in them?

Well, lots.
I think Our brain form a view of what music is and we expect certain things at certain times - kind of like you know that every 16 bars, something's going to change, on average. So when something does that differently, it throws us off. This does not apply to UW material per se, but I think that it shows that we get used to a specific sound and then we pick up on it in all forms of music from there on out. We go into a lot of listening looking for that comfort spot that we use to carry us through the song, dance to it, anything like that.

Anyway, just my thought. It's a very good observation though, Denkbat.

Interesting you mention this, I was listening to Tin There yesterday and wondered why UW chose to release this as a remix, when it really doesn't have that much in common with the original PG. It could have easily stood as its own track, why lump it in with another? I kinda feel the same way about Dark & Long, there are many mixes out there and besides a few elements most mixes sound completely different than the original.

It's cool you mention the observation of our brain expecting the structure, specifically the 16 bars. One thing I've noticed is the "lazy" ride cymbal in Food a Ready. I call it that because it's not in perfect timing all the time with everything else in the mix. I like it, but because it's not "perfect" it jumps out at me. I'm not criticizing UW at all, I'm sure they did it on purpose and it gives the song a great, unique feel.

I'm sure any music theorist could talk a lot about this. At least in "Western" influenced music, which is what all pop music is based on, there are certain music rules that have to be followed. Things like chord progressions (I - IV - V), or starting in a certain key and having to end in that key or else the music doesn't resolve itself and feels "off". I'm sure there are different rules for non-traditional types of music too, but this is what we're used to hearing.

And how many punk songs use the same 3 chords? Lots.

I guess I have heard it so often in the past year in the 2003 version, both live and on live gig recordings, that when I listen to an older version I am expecting it.

I have to say I prefer the 2003 version now.
