Re: Album info on Monday?
John Warwicker...wasn't he one of the members of Freur or is there a misprint on my memory?
|
Re: Album info on Monday?
Yes, John was in Freur.
After that, he went on to be one of the founding members of Tomato along with Rick and Karl. He did the Mmm... Skyscraper and In the Belly of St. Paul books with Karl. He's done several UW music videos, many of the album and single covers, curated both Art Jams, the Books of Jam, and just generally been Underworld's "Art Director" for many years. |
Re: Album info on Monday?
...not to mention the Rolling Stones' "Steel Wheels"!
Hmm, i quite liked the OWB artwork - yes, kind of splattery and reminiscent of dubno/STITI, but densely layered enough to look integrated. It may be just the many colors and patterns, but the new cover seems very random and childish. I guess i prefer it when Tomato art looks sleek and stylish. I guess the color blocks could be stylish in an 80's kind of way, but the marker smiley man and doodles on top? Err, kids, it's art day in kindergarten! Still, it's a work in progress, and i'm sure i'll learn to love it. |

I'm not really liking the album cover, but it does say it's a work in progress so maybe it will change a bit. It reminds of Prodigy's "Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned" cover, but more over-the-top. I think the main thing that's bothering me is the doodle that looks like a kid's drawing.

Re: Album info on Monday?
and if the actual concept is based in child's drawings? because it does look like a verbose of graphical information, like seeing too many things and wanting to place them all over something, in this case, a blank canvas. it's hardly 'slapped together', it's well composed, it just has too much info.
don't mind looking at it. it's so energetic and fun and it's way too cheery. |
Re: Album info on Monday?
i like it. i don't like it as much as the scribble artwork, but it's still very good. it's nice to have colour back, it makes it feel like a whole new era of underworld. the owb cover felt like a way to get people to buy it via comparisons of dubno, which, by the way, was not another dubno at all. the only thing i don't like is the child's drawing over the top, and the repeat black and white checkerboard on the lower right side from 'scribble'. i think the child's drawing could be replaced with graffiti saying 'underworld' and the album title, instead of the block-text underworld that is kind of just there. but these are minor things, overall, i think it's the best front cover they've had since the pearl's girl EPs, at least.

Re: Album info on Monday?
The "checkerboard" is a QR Code, useful to people outside the U.S., particularly in Japan..

Re: Album info on Monday?
ok, so the QR code i don't like. it would be neat if the back of the album cover was cryptic like peter saville's new order/ joy division albums, making the back of the album completely blank except for a QR code in the center, which would link to a website with the tracklisting. but on the front, all weird and slanted it looks a bit lame. the rest of the cover is fantastic.
