Re: Spam

Now, why do I get emails from private messages but not emails from forum replies? Hmm.

Is there any plugin we can use to prevent this spam?

I have a copy of Advanced IP Ban Manager for vBulletin 3.6/3.7/3.8. It can be implemented fairly painlessly but the instructions say that its heavily recommended to do a db backup. I'm an admin, but i dont have file system access to check and see if there is filespace to make the backup. Me and Yannick being a few timezones away doesnt help communication.

Re: Spam

Um, I just got a PM from some "RootModeratorX" or something like that saying he is an administrator here. He said I have a virus and that I should click on the URL given to have a system check. Before this, I saw a message that said "Would you like a reader receipt?". I clicked yes on the reader receipt. I reread the message and was hesitant on clicking on the URL given, and then I looked at the name of the person sending the PM and saw that he is banned (said so under his name).

So I suspect he is trying to spread viruses, or at the least, promote a virus scan site. I didn't click on the URL. Is there a problem with clicking yes on the reader receipt? Is that something to be suspicious of (I'm fearing the worst, like it slipped in a trojan my anti-virus software didn't catch)?

Or does clicking yes on the message that popped up mean nothing bad? My anti-virus software is good (Avast).

Re: Spam

um.. about 2 or 3 am last night my computer was hijacked by malware, specifically Spywareguard 2008. I really have no idea where I got it. It was a work computer so I was behind some fairly substantial layers of proxies and firewalls. Not to mention the fact that my being at work meant I was not indulging in any gentlemanly proclivities. (my little pony cos-play porn yay!) What I did just do however is go through my private messages on this site.

The first thing that happened was fire fox hanged and the adobe reader helper process crashed.

Took 3 hours of safe mode quarantining with various tools to eradicated it.

just an fyi

OK, finally found the IP banning section of the Admin CP, and added ModeratorTeam's IP to it (six other accounts from that IP too).

We may, however, need a more dynamic blocking tool, so I will look into that and try to get in touch with yan too.
