The videos seem really promising... Louisiana video FTW.

When's the Blu-Ray available?

Thanks mate. Yeah, they will be selling the import here but a few days lagged after the release abroad. I guess I will just buy that and get the bonus track digitally...seems to make the most sense. choices, choices...

Favorite videos so far:

Diamond Jigsaw, for the WTFness
Louisana, for the awesome stylized surrealism
Bird 1, like the time-lapse

Want to see more of:

I'm not able to figure out how to switch stores to JP to watch the videos....it's all in asian symbols and characters on itunes japan website. This sucks. :D

Within iTunes application, click the circle flag in the bottom-right corner.

Oh yeah, there's also a 30-second preview of "You Do Scribble (Abbey Road Version)" on iTunes JP.

I live here and think the same because of those concert tickets selling out so fast! The "bungalow with stairs" CD is keeping me content until I can get "barking"

Cool thanks, got it to work. Video previews are interesting, but WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO MOON IN WATER?!? The full track better have more of the original "lyrics" damnit!

"manifest" x 50
"...does not wait to cast its reflection" x 50

Im not an PvD-fan [i would have sent my stuff to Carl Craig or Hawtin instead], but if the songs "sucks" there is always the original :D ...

I know, I'm just referring to the discussion on singles that vaguely kicked off. Remixes for b-sides rather than new tracks. Meh.

I've still only heard radio edits of ALAF and Scribble. Holding out for the release, especially considering it's such a short album.

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

i like this album. it feels good as a whole and the four track run in the middle is just great.
but if i had higher expectations i think i'd have more to say. theres lots of crap running around. some of it gets in the way, some of it doesnt. overall they balance each other out and i'm happy enough with the big picture. i no longer feel like i'm as big a chump to pay that much for an alternate disc, which will be even better than this.

considering the variety in sounds i think all the videos put together should be interesting too

6.5,

worst one yet but not a tragedy and more about preferences rather than just being outright shitty.

I'm quite pleased with things so far and also quite happy that I placed an order for the larger bonus package which is now sold out. Over the past few months I had some trepidation about where things were headed, but wanted to wait to hear things proper.

That second disc plus the videos has me more intrigued now.

You rate AHDO over it? I do like AHDO, but from what I've heard, I believe Barking will be better than AHDO for me. AHDO is my least favorite album from them, and I know many other dirts would rank it last. I'd probably give AHDO 3 and 1/2 stars out of 5. No less than 3 stars. Somewhere around there.

I'm glad I preordered the boxset, too. I think I'll like the alternate album more than the regular album, but I'm sure I'll like the regular album, too. I will have the JP album with Simple Peal, too. The box set and JP album are alot of money together, but I had $45 sitting in my paypal account to begin with (was there for many months), so adding funds to that for the box set and spending money on the import, it was (in a way) only like spending $70 for both the box set and JP album (which is how much it costs a U.S. citizen to get the box set alone). Gah, kind of convoluted, but I think many will understand what I'm saying.

Now to find a way of getting the Abbey Road version of You Do Scribble. I'm not buying the album a third time!

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

This album proves at least 2 things.

1 - Karl Hyde is a great lyricist.
2 - Paul Van Dyk and Ramirez/Knight make the most boring, tedious drum tracks with no variation and no character.

Oh man oh man, these reviews are making me REALLY excited. I was too late to buy a boxset on UWLive, but waiting on the Om Records shop to have it available so that I can purchase it.

...or at least get my parents to buy it because I still haven't gotten my paycheck from work and I only have $30+ at the moment. *very impatient*

You're right actually, AHDO hasn't aged well. Luetin is better than anything on here, but as bad as it gets, there isn't a 'trim'

Close, tho

haha, yeah, but it was bound to happen sooner or later, everybody that is downloading it is a fan that has already bought it/order it anyway, so not much harm in that.

Just got back from Japan! Long trip, but worth it to hear the album on release date (but boy are my feet tired lol).

Initial reaction to it I'd say probably:
8.6 without Simple Peel, 9.0 with Simple Peel

Simple Peal has been Simply Skipped so far for me. Its nice, but its interfering with the awesomeness that is, Barking.

starfox203 09-01-2010 06:19 PM

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

Simple Peal is a nice ambient add on, but it's just that an ambient add on. Doesn't really add anything to the album.

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

Louisiana is a perplexing add on too. After so much raving about, it's an odd transition to a piano ballad.

I'm not sure if you are saying you like or dislike Trim, but I rather like Trim myself.

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

After a few listens, IMO, Diamond Jigsaw, Moon in Water, and Louisiana make up the best closing trifecta. I could play that section on repeat for quite a while. I don't get the hate some have expressed for Louisiana.

I would say Diamond Jigsaw is the most improved collaboration track. Just turn that one up loud and rock out!

I feel Between Stars is probably the biggest disappointment. I haven't quite put my finger on what it is yet, but something has changed it for the worse, and I feel it's a much less powerful track for it. I think that I'm probably going to like the original better than this version.

MN-Jeff 09-01-2010 08:01 PM

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

The only songs I don't absolutely love are "Hamburg Hotel" and "Grace". And I like those songs, I just love everything else even better.

"Between Stars" is awesome
"Moon In The Water" - are they STILL using Juanita's voice for samples? Good gravy, I hope she's getting royalty checks for this. Oh and the song is very awesome.
Love, love, love, the closer "Louisiana". This album is superb.

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

Well, I got a hold of the leak. I put it on my iPod. Then I did the craziest thing. I took it off my iPod. The JP album I ordered should arrive in the next few days. I feel it'll be more rewarding to wait for the album to arrive at my door then listen to the leak.

I checked out a bit of Louisiana and Simple Peal. Simple Peal is like the Simple Peal 1 track that they put on a broadcast. I think I'll alter its placement. I want Louisiana to stay as a closing track. I think I'll put Simple Peal in between Moon in Water and Louisiana. Perhaps, instead, I think for my music library in iTunes and for my iPod, I'll have Barking in my playlists section, as well as the alternate album of Barking (CD 2), and the JP version of Barking, with Simple Peal and YDS ARV. I'll have Barking with the 9 tracks UW intended, and a version of Barking with 11 tracks (the JP bonus track and the iTunes bonus track).

I wish that Are You Rockstar? made it onto Barking; at the least in the form of an iTunes bonus track.

Edit: I was tempted to just put it on my iPod again and listen to it tonight anyway. :p But I did an order tracking of the album, and it left Tokyo on September 1st and made it to JFK airport on September 1st. Woot! That is in NY, only a few states away from me. This should come in the mail in less than 24 hours. I'll wait for it to arrive at my home. This is wicked sweet. :D Then I'll have the box set coming in the middle of the month. :)

How many times have you heard it? First couple of times it seemed like disposable fodder (a la Cuddle Bunny vs. Celtic Villagers); but after listening to it after working out, in the hot sauna with headphones on.....WOW! All the odd beats and parts really clicked into place and surprised me (like when the muted tuba sounding bass goes "wAAAooooouuuuuuUUUUooooWWHH" @ 3:32). Closest thing to Jazz Music I've ever liked actually.:p

Re: New Underworld album - Barking (Sept. 13, Sept 2 Japan)

Glad everyone's digging this. I'm holding out for the Lim. Ed. arrival in a couple weeks. I've heard some samples and of course live versions, but am eagerly anticipating hearing the Cd quality version full through, holding the artwork in hand, just the experience of the physical thing.

By the by, AHDO has aged just fine for me. I got into Underworld in a big way in 2001-02, so AHDO was their first new record that i was waiting for, bought the first day, played endlessly. So i have a lot of strong emotions with it. OWB tour was the first time i saw the band (NYC, 9/2007), but the album is a bit bleh for me...seems over-produced somehow.

But i love all the records for various reasons. From what i've heard, i think Barking will be soundtracking my autumn for sure!

I haven't heard it all the way through yet, but Parc sounds like 90s UW to me, and that is a 2008 release.

@Holden: I love all their albums, too. Even if I wouldn't give 5 stars outta 5 for all of them, I love all their albums nonetheless (I do give 5 stars to Dubnobass and STITI, though).
