Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
the band have said on social media, emails etc they wanted to know fans thoughts. As I don't do facebook/twitter etc, here's a crucial bit of thinking I have had over the past week whilst reading the book, playing some of the discs, and anticipating the gig tomorrow. I'm inspired by the discussion about halfway through the book where everyone talks about the shifting the focus, via the project, away from the traditional record an album, release a lead single, then big event with the album (that quickly dies away after 3 weeks in most cases), and also the analogy of the series to tv series, which people (like Rick) come to sometimes years after the first series/pilot.
Rick talks about how the wow moments are unlikely to be the big expected ones, but are frequently found in unexpected times, places and situations. my experience has been from the beginning, and I've religiously awaited every thursday and an email. I've then delighted in hearing something I've never heard before, and experienced the accompanying media. I engage with the track a lot for the week, and as releases pass, I relisten to prevous weeks releases, seeing a bigger whole, so in many ways I have new experiences all the way through the project. but equally i know there is a collection of the project coming. and when this happens, I have all sorts of new experiences with hearing the music differently. My stereo is so superior to the pc speakers, so I hear so much that is new in these tunes. I therefore get to have brand new forms of engagement with each track, and each episode. wow! not only that, but the box also has the equivalent of a full albums worth of other, previously unheard portions of the same project. WoW! I also have this physical product, and as referenced in the artists discussion, I truly love the product. I don't mind streaming/digital, but the physical wins for me everytime. On this occasion, we're properly spoiled! the book, and the extensive notes are a phenomenal companion. again, wow! So my interpretation (probably wrong, but hey ho) is that as artists, the band wanted to move away from the big wow moment. An unintended consequence, has been me experiencing a phenomenal ongoing series of wows, still happening now. every week for a year, and then repeatedly for the month I've had the box, almost daily I've had another wow. I know I'll have several wow moments tomorrow night when seeing the live version. Genuinely, my re-istening to all 6 discs has been a delight. There isn't a single track I don't like. Some, heard in isolation didn't move me at first go, and these would'v e been listened to less frequently across the year, but they'd still have been there. With the box/discs, hearing sounds in the whole, I've really loved some tracks that didn't grab me before. This project has helped me engage in self reflection. The version of appleshine continuum in the box is for me a vastly different track. I think the weekly release is just my favourite, but it is close. That's one amazing piece of music. we know from the barking credits they sometimes view the forum, so perhaps they might see this. one query, in the credits there aren't any references to altitude dub continuum are there? or is that me? |

I appreciate your reactions and generally agree. It's a special time to be a fan, to ponder and consider the Drift process.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Finally got my boxset and divers into the text commentary while listening to the discs. I don't have anything to add about the music itself at the moment, but their thoughts on the music are very interesting and create complicated thoughts for me. I need to dwell on it further to really articulate this well. Very crudely and broadly, I think the result of Rick and Karl so explicitly explaining what it is about their work that interests them is the realization that what they like and what we (or at least I) like about Underworld are not really the same thing. Indeed, the guys seem disdainful and even hostile towards the limitations that IMO have actually resulted in their best work.
(Mind you, I'm a comic book editor. It's my job and nature to impose limitations upon artists, with a view to creating something cohesive, digestible and lasting.) So yeah, complex feelings about this new understanding of their creative worlds. |

started realizing this around the time of OWB and pretty much confirmed it for myself from then on. it sucked realizing that why I fell in and got so hyped were not for the reasons that rick and karl (mostly rick, eh) are in the game for. my high school brain bought into the idea of dirty, and with emerson's departure and an escalating fuss over perfectionism, polish, and control, subsequent albums seemed... less and less that. it was frustrating, and Barking saw me out of the fanboy zone for good. after the initial annoyance that kindred creative spirits aren't that so much, it's healthier to separate your POV and allow your heroes their own agency as to what their own work means! doesn't mean the processes you went through with it are less valid. if anything now you know it's a more original expression of where you were leaning towards anyway. interested in hearing more on this. i was not surprised to hear their dim view of the Riverruns, but it caused some indigestion nonetheless, especially as some of us have been saying it was their best work until all of this. |

Did some Photoshop work to recreate the boxset cover art digitally... for folks who like that sorta thing. 3000x3000.

'Do Breakers Trip'. I don't understand why this was released. I've tried so many times and it still sounds absolutely bloody horrible. Even as someone who likes Hundred Weight Hammer and Ring Road and Molehill and various other un-Underworldy tracks, I can't find any pleasure from this track at all.

Yeah, Karl's downtrodden vocal on "Breakers do trip" brings the track down. But as an instrumental, there's a lot going on. I wish I could clock it all, but I find it a bit of a throwback and interesting.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Really enjoying the ‘Drift’ box set, a lot to digest which I suspect will take quite a while.
I have the extra downloads burned to 5 CDs, and have made some artworks and put them on my website in case they are any use. https://www.jamielochhead.co.uk/uwde1.html They follow Simon Taylor at Tomato’s designs (fairly) closely. The fonts I used to match are Compacta (with a manual italicisation, forwards and backwards) and the wonderful OCR-B 10 bit. The Compacta seems to be a slightly different version as the bar on the T and similar features is slightly thicker on the album. Not sure if anyone has mentioned the fonts before in the thread. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Do Breakers Trip sounds a lot like something Karl would've done during that brief solo phase when he was working with Brian Eno. you can practically hear his voice on the track

I hope they are useful. It was fun making them. There are a few other Underworld cover artworks here, https://www.jamielochhead.co.uk/browse1.htm Many are for recordings available through the tacker. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Has anyone ripped the audio tracks from the Blu-ray and would care to share them? Would love to have their video versions/edits in HQ.
I have the boxset/CD tracks, digital singles, digital EP versions, but not the Blu-ray video versions. Don't have a way to rip the Blu-ray sadly. Then I can make a true definitive single CD personal album playlist. :) |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
It’s too early for Drift Series 2 but I’d do love them to finish or release songs that are floating around but never released. See Bamboo/5 Points..

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Given the last material they released in the weekly output of Series 1 was four months ago, I wouldn't say it's necessarily too early for Series 2. I have a feeling they'll be in touch in the next few weeks.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
That was the first name for Drift Series 1, back when they originally announced it in May. The name was changed later, but because of how late it was done the Drift Songs name continued to persist in some distributor and retailer listings. You can see the original solicitation for Drift Songs in the first post of this thread.

If we get a Drift 2 this year, and that's a big if, I imagine it will be later in the year like Drift Series 1.
I would love more shows followed by a Drift Series 1: Live release and save Drift Series 2 for 2021. Hell, I would be happy if they just continued releasing these old gems from the studio jams, broadcasts, and live rehearsals throughout the year. |
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Yeah, I was thinking this earlier when I saw more Series 1 footage on Instagram. I suppose I kind of imagined they'd just carry on, for some reason. No complaints of course, there's still a lot of Series 1 I've not digest yet!

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Wild idea/wishful thinking: Drift 2 is a live project.
|
Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
Regardless of whatever form Drift 2 takes, I think they should absolutely continue releasing archival material every week. It was sincerely DELIGHTFUL, and created what felt like a kind of conversation between us and the band.

Honestly, I'm sitting patiently more for the Riverrun era. Please lord, I hope they reissue all that stuff. I'd give anything for a reissue of that stuff.

Re: DRIFT Series 1 - New album, Nov 1, 2019
If they do an OWB box, I reckon one of the discs will be a Riverrun 'best of'.
