I'm wondering why anyone thinks that the band wouldn't release the best stuff first, as well... if you've been away for a while, do you think you'd want to come back with a soft plop or a big bang? Particularly as it seems as though there's scope for a new distribution mechanism with the next release. If this is the most exciting stuff they've got lined up, it's not looking good, is it...

Previous first releases (from memory)

AHDO - TMO - biggest track on album
BF - KoS - biggest track on album
STITI - Pearl's Girl - biggest track on album

They didn't trail AHDO with Luetin, BF with Skym or STITI with Shudder, did they...

for once, I'm with Simon on this one. It's just dull and unexiting. There's nothing in this track that makes me go "wow" or "cool" or even "hmmm, that's nice". ;)
Still, judging from some of the other new material bits we've been hearing, and the recent quality improvement of the liveshows, I still hold hopes for whatever it is they'll be releasing.

i really think Underworld are doing something other than releasing this as a single (or album trailing track)...its a project (as Tong said), rather than the next release, i feel...you don't (usually) release 25 minute tracks to the public...unless its on an ep...(or you are The Orb ;) )

maybe this is what was finished this week, and they decided to send it to Tongy..."new music by Underworld" NOT the "new single from Underworld" - thats the difference here

In the old days, DJ's used to get sent tracks by record companies to test the water, if a track didn't do well they went back and re did it....or revised their plans...maybe UW are doing this...seeing what the reaction is like...

i'm sure they are reading these forums for feedback....

my other thoughts on this:

UW have sent this track out to dj's like Paul Woolford & (maybe) Pete Heller to remix to play around with - the Paul Woolford version which most people proclamied was the original, which i thought was a remix...is proably the better version, and with the exception of the lyrics is totally different to the version Tongy played....

i still think we should all just calm down and wait until what KH says...no-one knows what this track is, and what is propsed for it, Karl has already said that UW are going different places with the next couple of projects, we know that they are 'probably' going to release an Album (and trail it with a single or two), but there is also the film soundtrack, which is probably more pressing at the moment, and K&R work on many things at once...so until we get some definite details we should all hold back on the speculations....i know its fun but lets just wait and see...

Wasnt BF previewed by Kittens? I remember it being a free download here on dirty.org back in 1998.

Kittens. number1 UW track.

That it was. A banging track for sure, but was that really characteristic of BF as a whole? I've the same feeling about "Electronic Part 1"...there's more to it than we've heard so far. Everyone sit tight and get ready for the official release!

Was that before Tong aired KoS?

yes.

i'd not expect this song to be the banging track/single of the album. especially since its only 5min of a 25min track. so there is no chance this is a single, right?

why can't it just be a clip of a song that UW felt they wanted to put out as a teaser? back in the STITI days, they only wrote 8 songs and choosing Pearls Girl was the obvious choice (being that Juanita and Banstyle were 10min+ each.) with this album, they have written over 100 songs and from what i gather plan to release a great number of them using their new distribution method. so maybe this is a song for an EP, maybe this is THE track of the album, maybe this is a track to be release for free on Underworld live, who knows. but to pan this snippet and treat it as a whole track, an entire single/album-representative track is nonsense. its 1/5 a song.

i happen to like this quite a bit. upon first listen (in the car) i didnt like the vocals one bit. thought they were very dull and unimpressive. then after i had a proper headphone listen (my car speakers suck) i realzed just how well they meshed with both the mood, and the rhythm of the song. there are a few moments in there where the lyrics match SO well that i get giddy. also, love the woodblocky percussion throughout. there is much more to this simple song than first meets the ears.

Kittens was issued as a download on 5th Feb 1999 (on this day only)

uncertain of when PT played KOS though

(Kittens was also on the first issued KOS promo, probably the one Pete Tong played - so he choose to play KOS instead of Kittens - maybe?)

I have an acetate of Kittens, and I know there was one for KOS, so he may have had either of these, but i think they sent out both tracks together for this....(i can't check press releases at the moment but i do have them for both early KOS promos....)

but I agree with Stimpee....Kittens is the biggest track on BF ;)

(one other point of note the very first three track BF promo cassette had Kittens but NOT KOS....)

Fair enough. That still proves my point.
