Recently ive been thinking.....
I love the song, yeah its amazing.
So is Dark & Long...
But i would loved to hear these remastered, they sound tired now compared to the enhanced mastering quality of todays sounds...

enhanced volume =/= enhanced mastering quality
Wow, you're reminding me... I've had new headphones for some months now and still haven't fully listened to dubno!
Yeah, dubno is really quiet... so quiet that some audio players are playing it too quiet even when the volume is on maximum.
On most tracks (except maybe Dark and Long) there is wasted headroom of ~3db...
You can fix this by using Replay Gain (http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Replay_Gain) and you will never need to touch your volume knob again. Of course this won't work if you're playing the CD.
Or find this (http://www.discogs.com/Underworld-Dubnobasswithmyheadman/release/901889) version, it's "remastered".
I remember doing some tests with limiting, and most plugins are very good when doing it correctly. But transients (sharp sounds) always suffer, no matter how good the plugin is, because they need the headroom.
For example listen to Rowla or Confusion the Waitress: the "kick" of the kickdrum is very pronounced and awesome. Limiting would be very bad here...
Then for a bad example listen to Cups. Cups is meant to have a kick like that, too... but most of them are destroyed... On each snare hit the kick is noticably weaker. Or listen to around 7 minutes: there are almost no kicks left, only a muffled "thud".
Or Little Speaker... You can hear the limiting working if you listen to the kicks.
But yeah, Dirty Epic is awesome :D

Thanks for the heads up on that, if i can get it for less than £65 i will certainly make that purchase ;)

Well, it isn't exactly remastered... They just kind of fixed the volume problem, I don't think they've done anything else.

I didn't know that the x2 cd version of "Dubno" was that expensive!!!!
I bought it (seemingly) ages ago, and I only opened it once, realized I couldn't play the mini cd, and put it amongst all my other cd's ... it's still even it's original plastic wrap!
...or wait - lemme guess, there's two different versions of that release, and one is super rare/expensive and the other one is common
(and I've got the common one, right?)

There have been many times when Dirty Epic gave me chills down the spine. I annulled eventual recurrence of those moments by listening to that track over and over and over....and over and over. Very foolish. Don't do that. Now I'm on a Dirty Epic abstinence of undetermined period to try to salvage something.
ahh
i wish dubno wasn't so awfully quiet. that record is perfect, it's genuine...but the volume :/

Nah, I think there is only one version of that 2CD edition, and it's expensive/sough after because it has Why, Why, Why. I don't think it's worth £65 though; at least I know I wouldn't pay near that much for it. I've been looking to get it for a while, but I have Rez/Why, Why, Why and will probably pick up the compi (http://www.discogs.com/Various-Volume-Eight/release/115269)lations (http://www.discogs.com/Various-Wasted-The-Best-Of-Volume-Part-1/release/89013) with Why, Why, Why too. Those three all seem to be much easier to come by.

I think this is the only CD with the full-length version of Why Why Why though. This dubno edition was still in print until about a year and a half ago, so I think £65 might be a bit much.

Dirty Epic was the first Underworld song I had ever heard.
I bought the 'Wax Trax Afterburn: 94 & Beyond' sampler disc 2 days before Christmas 1994. I bought it for Die Warzau, Chris Connelly & KMFDM.
But when I heard Dirty Epic, I forgot that there were other songs on the disc. I fell in love with it instantly. I went and got dubnobass the day after Christmas.
I have been a fan ever since. But with all the great tunes they have put out, Dirty Epic is still my favorite.

...My introduction to UW, I quickly bought my own copy and it became the soundtrack to the summer of '94 and collecting started shortly afterwards.
This was my first foray into early (ie pre-NUXX) Underworld, I remember asking my dad for an extra couple of quid to buy it in Virgin Megastore in Leicester. The first two tracks I remember rambling on a bit and I got a little disappointed, but then the original version came on and I was captivated.
I stopped listening to Underworld for a couple of years after AHDO, and it was only when Dirty Epic came on randomly on my mp3 player that I remembered how good the track was - and lo, they became regulars on my CD player once again. Staggering track, and one I play to people who aren't fans of electronic music if explaining why Underworld are so great (along with Phonestrap 1, but that's another story).
Dubnobass's volume problem is very tedious when listening to it on headphones walking along a busy main road, I discovered this afternoon.

Dirty Epic is still fucking awesome.
Dubno jap 2cd is not worth £65, its still £11.99 on Amazon.co.jp for a start, and others.
Wasn't there a longer version of DE on the promos (german/argentinian?) of 1992-2002?
Save yourself the trouble of buying the Jap release by putting your Dubno through ReplayGain, or or if you want to do it the long way, use CDex to rip it to wav and add +3dB with Wavosaur. You can then add as much gain as you want and see in detail if theres any clipping.
Vectorman0: The versions of Why Why Why on the Volume compilations are shorter than the Jap bonus CD. The version on the bonus cd is from the flip side of the Pink Rez 12"....and its also awesome.
I use awesome in the american sense. I dont really think that Dirty Epic is full of AWE....but its a great track :)

am i mistaken or was the jed the fish edit - the same editor as Hall's Mix of Dark & Long (i.e. Steve Hall).... probably mistaken... but thought i'd throw it out there...

Listened to this for the first time in awhile completely blazed in bed last night with this big, dumb grin on my face. I'd almost forgotten how good it is - an anthem for those cut loose, the uncertain, the nihilistic, the joyous. "I get my kicks on Channel Six", indeed!

dirty epic... wow. i remember the atlanta show. i was late, and i walked in about two minutes into dirty epic. the place was flashing with lights and the whole room was covered in blue smoke... i got the chills then. i lost my CD copy of dubno so i just ordered a cassette. the only problem for me with dubno is the intro to cowgirl... i wish i could get a version that had the long version of cowgirl, but the full version of dirty epic with the thunderclap at the end. the single version cuts out about a second before the thunder.

dirty epic live. yes. saw this phenomena at bristol academy, 2002, and the ripe old age of 14. i belted out every word, amazing.
i'm still waiting for the recording of that gig. mike, yannick, i'm looking at you two :P
i have a godawful recording of push upstairs from that gig, but frankly a recording of that quality is better than nothing.
also, dubnobass has a lot of headroom, but does not need a remaster...i'm getting annoyed with "remastered" albums being released that have merely been compressed. the examples i'm thinking of are lx-p's recent remastering of the orb's adventures beyond the ultraworld, and of course iggy pop's truely horrible 1997 brick-wall remaster of raw power.
if you want to listen to dubnobass louder, turn the fucking stereo up. :D
