There's no San Francisco show, but an Oakland show at the wonderful For Theater on AUG 7 just went on sale today at 10AM PT.

I just got mine using this code: volpe

enjoy!

Got my ticket too! I've never been to the Fox but I've heard from people who went there last month that it underwent a superb renovation.

Can I ask about the area? Is it relatively safe to walk a few blocks after a show? And if not, are there at least a lot of cabs like in the City?

There's a BART station a block from the theater.

According to the Fox Theater's website, it's been closed since 1966, and just reopened this Feb., so I bet it's awesome now.

Wow, I didn't know it had been closed for so long.

Thanks for the info on the BART. Is that the one on Broadway near 12th? So is that pretty safe at night to walk on Telegraph down to Broadway?

19th and Broadway station. It's practically next door to the station. Here's the map:

Thank you very much for the helpful information. That is really close to the venue. I am sorry to be a pest, but if I took that and got off on 12th at Broadway, is it relatively safe to walk on Broadway from 12th down to about 9th? I'm trying to find a place to stay and the closest hotels that are on Broadway don't allow ins/outs of the parking lot unless one pays for valet instead (and I don't really want valet touching the car). Thanks again!

I think the area around the fox is relatively safe. I live in North Oakland and I know the city has pumped a lot money into the redevelopment of the downtown area and the refurb of the Fox was a big part of the plan.

Cadevil thank you very much for the info. That whole area was the one hit by the Loma Prieta earthquake, right? I remember all those high rises were desolate for a long time.

TheBang: Wow, that's dedication. I'm only coming from about 300 miles away, so I'm a wimp by comparison. At least you can come into the Oakland airport. If you're not staying with area friends, there are two Marriotts on Broadway I was looking at (the Courtyard Marriott is $35 cheaper than the regular Marriott and they're only a block apart). Usually I stay near the Arena/Coliseum, so that whole downtown area is unknown to me.

Well, it's a given that if I want to see them, I'll have to fly. And it's going to be $3-400 at a minimum to make it to the West Coast. So if I'm already spending that much, I might as well add some more cities at an incremental cost.

The Bang, are you flying solo on all three of these shows?
Yeah, my wife thinks UW sounds like a lot of noise, so she'd never come. I'll never be alone with my fellow Dirts there though. :)

That's awesome, TheBang. Too bad you can't bring your wife just to sight-see (well, except for Inglewood...I don't think there's much going on there unless she likes horse racing at Hollywood Park).

So normally I'd be going to the show in Toronto, but I'm in Vegas that week and in San Fransisco the weekend before, so I'll at least catch the show in Oakland. But my wife just told me today that she's bailing on me in order to shmooze at her conference, so now I have an extra ticket. If you still need a ticket (or know of anyone that still does), please buy mine!!!! I'd rather sell it to a fellow dirty than a dirty scalper! Message me for me more details!

I'm taking BART for less than a mile's journey, so you might want to look into that if your hotel is near one of the stops. I was scared to walk around the area as well, but it actually seemed okay when I went and peeked earlier.

should be plenty of cabs after the show I would think.

Just got back from the show. Here's a slightly more accurate tracklist:

1. Intro (tomato anti-rom-esque stuff)
2. Dark Train/Nu Train (I can't really tell the difference)
3. Cowgirl
4. Rez
5. Two Months Off
5. Push Upstairs
6. Cups
7. Beautiful Burnout (with Dirty Epic lyrics over intro)
8. Small Conker and a Twix
9. You Do Scribble
10. Between the Stars
11. King of Snake (no piano)
12. Nuxx
13. Pearls Girl (with more Dirty Epic lyrics thrown in)
14. Jumbo (with some new keyboard riff in the final grooves)

Encore

15. Spikee (with vocals and guitar outro)
16. Moaner

I didn't arrive till the last 15 minutes of the DJ set, so I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of reggae. Edit: Just read the thread. There was no reggae in the theater between sets, so it was all in your head, I mean, on the stream.

I don't have too much to say. You guys all saw the show on the Interwebs. Some of us were watching the stream on iPhones before the show started, seeing if we could see ourselves.

The venue was beautiful. They did an amazing restoration job. It still has the feeling of the old-time theaters while being all sparkly brand-new. It filled up nicely. The whole bottom floor was filled to the back. The balcony was only about a third full, but people were dancing up there. Lots more people than last night in Vegas. Lots of fans too, from the number of people I saw singing the lyrics. Met some fans that it was their first show, so I hope they were suitably blown away. Also found dubman at the front, so it was nice to meet him.

I think I like the Oblivions with Bells tour version of Beautiful Burnout better. I'm not sure why; I can't describe it. Again, Between Stars got a good dancing reception. I wonder how popular it will be when released. Spikee was killer tonight; better than last night's version.

Here's one of my better pictures. A tender moment at the end of NUXX. ;)

I've been seeing them since the mid-90s and I want to share a little story...as I drove from SF to Oakland last night, 'Dark Train' on the car stereo, the entire sky was awash with pinks due to a fantastic sunset. Earlier in the day I'd been playing 'Cowgirl' with my youngest because she loves yelling ICE CREAM ICE CREAM (LOL)...so to arrive 5 mins before they went on, 42 years old, waiting, hoping for a great night, and se them peel off 'Dark Train' and 'Cowgirl' for the first two was a large slice of serendipitous heaven.
For what it's worth, I thought they were really 'on' last night, a very very strong show...and trust me, I've seen more than a few!!!
Hit the hay at 2 am having re-watched some of the show on the laptop, woke up at 7.30 and just finished showing my youngest some of it again...feel like a young person LOL...energizing...delicious...if I didn't have family I'd follow the bastards around the country!!!!
For all who are seeing them on this mini-run, enjoy...

I was so disappointed in this concert, not in the performance by any means, but in the "fans"...probably the acoustics had something to do with this, but being on the floor, usually in the center two or three people back, I was constantly taken out of my happy place by people shouting and talking. How is it that I could hear people chatting? What were they doing chatting in the first place? And all the excitement over the giant balloons. Dear Lord, you'd think they contained money. Why was it so important to jump over people to touch a balloon and ignore the music?

I flew up to Oakland from L.A. for the show because I'd rather see Underworld alone rather than part of the craziness at the Forum, but I am regretting everything about it. I wish I could have the Hollywood Bowl or Riviera again tonight to get this bad taste out of my mouth.

Indeed...a lot of chatting around me, but I was able to channel it out...the balloon thing? Yeah, I hear ya but again I just tuned them out, although occasionally some enormous drunk would leave me wondering if (as he leapt with all the coordination of Stephen Hawking) if he was going to elbow me in the face...still, I managed to even work around that.

About 30 seconds into the show I resolved to focus on the music and not the 'chatter'...it's all you can do...

I had a blast! and it was great to meet chinoluxa and ben before the show at The Trappist bar, which was an experience all by itself. :p

This was my third Underworld concert and I seem to recall that the first one I saw at the Fox in S.F. rocked more tightly, but that probably was because there were far more people than night.

But everyone was dancing and the music was awesome. I had no talkers around me, because i always seek out the trance dancers, they totally turn me on. :D

dubman
08-08-2009, 11:43 PM
i dont know why you think people wouldnt talk at a concert. you're around people. it's what they do when you're sharing an experience. you want a happy place go close your eyes in a listening booth or something.

anyway i had a great time. i dont think i had much for talkers around me and i danced myself sore (as much as being in the front would allow me anyway). met TheBang and it was rad. some putz got the last setlist a few seconds before i did but i got to see one anyway and it was kinda neat.

as far as the show goes i think it was the most solid of the other 4 i've been to. i didnt lose myself like how i usually do out of sheer excitement (this is the 5th go-around by now), but i felt like it was the most substantial gig of theirs i've been to. usually it was either that they'd take about 20-30 minutes to feel as if there was a real groove happening, or that they'd start off huge and settle into that groove continuously until the end. but this one just felt like one after the other. bang. bang. bang. everything flew off the handle, everything harder. great night.

i take back what i said about you do scribble.

Thanks for posting that pic, Bang. I loved that moment.

I didn't hear any talking around me during the show, but there was that one wanker who kept shouting during a mellow part in the show. He had been yelling at Damian Lazarus during his set as well. And the only other bad bits I experienced was I got bashed in the head a few times from some 6 foot tall dude behind me who apparently had never been to a show before. When it all went nuts with the Rover balloons, he almost killed me grabbing for bits of the one Karl kicked that exploded (fortunately, I managed to save a chunk of it). Then this person pushed his way to the front barrier next to me and then kept turning around to have his woman take his picture of him with Underworld behind him (I seriously wish the habit would die...it's really annoying to have a person turn their back to a performer and act as if they're having their picture taken with them).

And I completely sympathize with those that traveled further than I did and had a bad time. I had to travel insanely far (for me) and would have been incredibly upset had it been completely ruined by people. I actually have far worse times at Los Angeles shows. Speaking of which, this is only the second Bay Area show I've seen of Underworld and each time, I'm the only idiot out front in line before doors (Los Angeles has done my head in when it comes to queues).

As for the show itself, I thought it was incredible. I personally feel its the third best show I've seen by them. Yeah, one could tell the fatigue is there and it'd be nice if they had more time between shows to rest, but I still feel they put as much as they could into it. I only wish they would've played more rare material (Spikee was great, as well as the little lyrical teases of Dirty Epic, but I'm extremely jealous of Vegas getting Bamboo--I love that song!). Still, I was really happy and it was fun to be at a beautiful venue I'd never been to, plus my calves appear to have grown 3 inches thicker from the night (the pain is still with me!).

Oh, and if the Deadhead from Santa Cruz is on here reading this, could you please private message me and mention your name (that way I know it's you)? I lost sight of you during the Rover balloon madness and couldn't locate you after the show.

I'm not great with song titles so maybe someone can help me. I've seen the Fox concert 3 times now and want to know the song titles of the 2 songs that followed "Beautiful Burnout". I really wished I did punch him, but he was behind me and I thought he'd throw a drink at me if I yelled at him (I'd already had two drinks thrown at me because apparently the area between the stage and the rail also serves as a trash bin).

After that was a little bit of "Small Conker and A Twix" which went into "You Do Scribble." Then it was "Between Stars," which is the one you compare to Echo & The Bunnymen. People were kind enough to post a setlist on the previous page, by the way, that way you can check out the full tracklisting for your 4th or more viewings of the show :)
