View Full Version : We need some new Underworld material!

is it just me, or has attendance, or at least active posting, in these dirty forums really fallen off recently? Some of this could be attributed to the recent holidays. But it's now mid-January. So many of the threads haven't had any comments for several days, sometimes no posts in a sub-forum at all in that time.

We need some new Underworld to discuss, or something to kick-start 2009!

dirty forums need a reboot... to get rid of all the approximately 8000 fake members and ugly forum names like "world/2" and "noise/2"
Also, what about reorganizing the forum structure. Example of just three forums:

1) Underworld (including live!)
2) Music
3) Everything else (general discussion board)

...and have an archive section, where one can view and search all the posts from before the reboot.

i've noticed the same sorts of trends. i'm sure when some new stuff starts to come out (note that today's UWlive update finds R+K in the studio), folks will start getting chatty again.

i haven't been posting much because the forums are blocked at my new job (not that i posted a lot before the switch, but still....)

i think Jans ideas are pretty solid. I think it goes it waves and right now we are kinda stagnating because the forums are a bit spread out and such...

When the forums first started, that is how they were. It then spread out from there as everyone ended up talking about everything else.

Sadly they've not done anything really worth mentioning for over 10 years. AHDO was ok but OWB... at least nothing to attract new fans.

Um, that's your opinion. I respectfully disagree. Whether you like the latest albums or not, the last ten, heck, the last 5 years, have been very prolific and filled with "firsts" for Underworld. For example:

-regular web radio broadcasts
-art jams in Japan and NY
-collaborative soundtracks
-internet-only EP releases
-a bunch of live recording via LiveHereNow and Underworldlive.com
-the Book of Jam collections

That's just off the top of my head. And as for attracting "new" fans? Yeah, the crowd at every Underworld concert is filled with geezers

Hmmmmm. . . Don't tell that to my 19 year old daughter and her friends - they can't stand the stuff before AHDO. To quote my daughter, "It lacks soul."

True they are one of the hardset working acts around, but maybe its quantity over quality? But like everything its totally subjective. I just think other bands out there are doing a lot more exciting things.

It sounds like i'm hater but i've so many UW cds, downloads, etc i've lost count.

Ah what! Dubno and STITI were nothing but soul!

Yeah, thats what I said. But she grew up an Orange County, CA emo. You know - Death Cab, Pedro The Lion, Bright Eyes. So her idea of "soul" means as far from "techno" as possible. On the other hand, her tastes are evolving. check back in 5 years and we'll see if she still feels that way.

Still, there are many with refined tastes similar to my daughters (tastes I respect but don't necessarily share), who are finding the later underworld releases more to their liking, therefore countering your conjecture.

Let's be honest, as long as you enjoy the music that's the main thing. It'd be a pretty dire situation if everyone was the same.

Absolutely! Totally agree.

And while this thread has generated some of the typical UW-related debating (e.g. what was the 'best' album?), which is fine, what i was/am really wondering is, forum-wide, why the lack of posting as of late. It comes and goes, i guess. Hope it picks back up.

my guess....

overall lack of any music from any artist worth mentioning.

I just did a search of metacritic for dance/electronic albums from the last year rated over 80 and got only 15 hits. of those most were abstract, glitchy, ambient or neo-electro. and all of it has been done before. even in rock releases I can't find much to my liking. as a matter of fact, I think g'n'r's chinese democracy is my fav album of last year... and that is sad, isn't it?

I don't know if the correlation between new underworld material being released in relation to the amount of discussion on the forums is that strong.

The forums seem to have their own ebb and flow to them in specific topical areas. A new album comes out and a flurry of activity occurs in the headset forum. A new film comes out and a thread may pop up in treatment, or it may not depending on the relevance and interest(or lack thereof) at a given time of year. A reboot, refit, rejiggle is always periodically needed, but then there is always the unquantifiable factor of people coming and going from forums.

There has been quite a drop off in the amount of posters who had previously been around for years. While it's always unfortunate to lose people, that's the way things go. Life imposes itself in ways that one cannot always foresee and posting messages online about a film you might have just seen or a book you just read doesn't always seem that necessary.

I like the idea of categories and separation, but that's just one man's opinion.

I to think the whole forum needs a spring clean. Like what was said earlier, the sub forums don't make too much sense (to newbies anyway), and it's not too inviting. Dare I say ditch the brown :D ;)??!

I concur. There are too many subforums here with only a few (or, in a certain case, one) thread that could easily be merged. And the Brown doesn't make you feel as welcome as, say, an image of B&W splotches Underworld-style.

I quite like and prefer sub forums for different forms of media. The brown go? I'd rather not see that change.

Ditch the brown over my cold dead body! ;)

I quite like the sub-forums because it keeps everything neatly in its place. I would hate to have to trawl through a "General" category to find a World thread to rant on!

No I do not suffer from OCD.

Where's the duster? :p

We need this put in the UW forum sub section D.1

Here Here on the brown and the sub forums!

I'd like to keep things in their right place, films in treatment, books in bound. Lumping these together would just be a bit ugly in terms of simple organization.

It would be nice to finally be rid of the "/2" in half the forum names. And I know some people like the brown, but I personally find it a little less than inviting or inspiring. Underworld is such a visually oriented group that surely something more in line with their artistic style could be explored?

As for the drop in posts, I know that for me, it's because work is cycling back into it's busy phase for me. Today is a rare slow day because the person I'm usually working with all day is out until tomorrow. But typically, I just don't have as much time to think about non-work related stuff any more let alone talk about it. I do miss the debates around here though. Haven't had a good knock-down drag-out argument in quite a while.

i like the idea of merging subforums so that its all a mess and people dont get cordoned off into their topical cliques
besides, this forum isnt big enough to justify it anymore anyway.

as for the brown, keep it. obv the more the noise gets complicated the less it says and the stupider it gets.

Yannick had a lot of problems getting the old forum data imported as the database was so large. The /2 ones were created as a side-effect of this. Yan is the only person doing the work on the site. It would have been great to get the old forums pre-2005 online for read-only purposes, agreed. Takes time, and I'm not sure if Yannick can be bothered really.

Is there anything left of the forums pre-2005? I know the pre-/2 stuff exists, and I'll talk to Yannick again about restoring that, but I was under the impression that everything pre-2005 was lost?
