I thought I'd start this new thread for the release so we don't have to wade through 1.5 years of pre-release crap.

The Sunshine soundtrack is out on iTunes!

Unfortunately, it is in DRM-filled 128 Kbps AAC format. There are rumors that iTunes will soon become all DRM-free. If/when that happens, you'll be able to update the album to DRM-free 256 Kbps AAC files for 30% of the original album price. Tracks are not available individually.

Tracklisting:

1. John Murphy – Welcome to Icarus II
2. I Am Kloot – Avenue of Hope
3. Underworld – Capa's Last Transmission Home
4. John Murphy – Kanada's Death, Pt. 2 (Adagio In D Minor)
5. Underworld & John Murphy – Mercury
6. John Murphy – Kanada's Death, Pt. 1
7. Underworld & John Murphy – Searle Finds the Crew of Icarus I / Floating Free / Searle's Last Blast
8. John Murphy & Underworld – Freezing Outside: Harvey
9. Underworld – Trey's Fate
10. John Murphy & Underworld – Pinbacker Slashes Capa

16. John Murphy – Capa's Jump
17. Underworld – Distortions
18. Underworld – Capa Meets the Sun (To Heal)
19. Underworld – Peggy Sussed

So, here's the final count:

FFS.

i'm going to have to wait for better quality/non-drm if im going to drop a tenner on that one.

of course, np, Yan. Unfortunately, your links got mangled (at least on the MySpace bulletin I saw) cause you copy/pasted the text above with the "..." in the middle, instead of the full link. :(

I think Track 4 is mislabeled. Kanada's Death Pt. 1 and 2 from the John Murphy release have been combined into Track 6 on the official release, so I think that should be "Kanada's Death", and Track 4 should simply be "Adagio in D Minor".

So, what was the hold up?

TheBang

Legal disputes. I think that's about all we'll get.

I just noticed the cover art says "From the Director of . . . Slumdog Millionaire". Interesting.

Anyone know why some tracks are UW & JM and others are JM & UW? The Sunshine piece by JM is gorgeous but I still love To Heal the best - think thats the third time i've bought it now in some form;)

Just pure speculation here, but maybe it's UW first on Mercury, because it's primarily an UW composition. And UW first on Track 7 because UW appears first (JM the last 2/3 of that track).

On Track 12, it's JM music first, then UW. On Tracks 8 and 10, I think it's primarily JM over some UW contributions.

I went over the scores again, and on the official release, Track 4 should be called "Escaping the Icarus II" and Track 6 should be called "Kanada's Death".

Downloaded it, but what the fuck?!? It's not even in mp3 format so I can't burn it or put it on my mp3 player.

Does Nero convert AAC to mp3 or what program do I need to do it with? This sucks, fuck iTunes if this is how all of their music is. Amazon.com at least has mp3...

DRM means they can do anything with the music you bought. If there is no way to circumvent the protection, I will not even consider buying it. And by circumvent I don't mean the analog hole or the "burn to CD then rerip" strategy.

I know that I should be grateful that they finally released it, but this is a huge letdown... :(

I look forward to the day when we can sing a requiem for all DRM, including iTunes. ;)

Good to hear it's finally released - hoping it comes to Rhapsody soon (Still holding out against iTunes, though i have less choice these days!)

Use iTunes to burn a cd and then rip it as MP3?

i caved :(

if they had to go through lawyerly arrangements with an unceremonious release then this just smells of fan pleasing and they'd have no motivation to release it anywhere else or even without DRM.

as for the music, john murphy is getting interesting, but also frustrating.

Very nice indeed good research especially with the Jelly Blue reference as it was only webcast info that came from me thinks.

Apologies for what may be the oldest and most boring question on the forum- but does anybody have any idea if/when we might see a release for the SUNSHINE OST? It's been so long since the release of the film that I'm beginning to fear we might never see it. I think that would be a great pity. I watch the film quite often -it's endlessly watchable, and unfairly mailigned in my view- and whenever I hear the music in the film it really bugs me that I can't get it on CD. It's like BLADE RUNNER all over again.:(

Or search for "Sunshine Underworld"

You may want to hold off on purchasing it right now though. iTunes is in the processing of converting everything in the store to DRM-free iTunes Plus format (which also has twice the bitrate of the DRM versions), however, Sunshine has not yet been converted. If you buy the DRM version for $9.99 right now, you'll have to pay $3.00 for the privilege of updating your DRM version to the DRM-free version when that is released. If you wait, you'll only have to pay $9.99 for the DRM-free version once it's released. All the DRM-free conversions are expected to be completed by the end of March, but Sunshine could be converted anytime between now and then.

What is the benefit of DRM-free?

dol

You could just buy it now and bun it to CD then rip it again to get rid of the DRM.

What is the benefit of DRM-free?

If it's DRM-free, then that's means it's not encrypted, so you can do anything with it you want. You can listen to it on any device, you can copy it to any computer, and if you get a new computer, you won't need to reauthorize it with iTunes, and if iTunes ever closes down, you will still be able to use the music.

See news stories from the last year for when Yahoo Music, MSN Music, and Wal-Mart all shut down their DRM music services, leaving their users with worthless files.

Also, at iTunes, the DRM files are 128 Kbps, and the iTunes Plus DRM-free files are 256 Kbps, so it's twice the bitrate for higher audio quality.

You could just buy it now and bun it to CD then rip it again to get rid of the DRM.

Yes, however, there's still the quality difference in the source material at iTunes (128 vs 256). And if you rip it in the manner you're describing, then to retain the original quality, you either have to keep it in a large lossless audio format, or re-encode to a lossy format and lose quality.

sunshine soundtrack is now in plus format
trying to figure how to update it for less money than just re-buying it but since i got an itunes gift card i dont have much of a problem destroying the DRM-poisoned ones either

Nice. To upgrade your existing album to Plus, on the main page of the iTunes Store, you should see a graphic that has a big + symbol and says iTunes Plus. Alternatively, you may have a link on the right-hand side of the screen under "Quick Links" that says "Upgrade to iTunes Plus".

Click on either one of these, and you'll be presented with the option to upgrade your previous purchases to iTunes Plus.

So, up until this year, Sunshine was only available on iTunes. But apparently, they re-issued it to some other platforms (including streaming, like Spotify) in May 2018.

So while you can now buy it on Google Play and Amazon Music, the really interesting one is the TIDAL store:

http://tidal.com/store/album/88890392

because they offer a lossless FLAC purchase option. This is the first time this has been available in lossless. I couldn't find it in any other lossless stores (like 7Digital or Qobuz), except for one or two stores in Japan.

Good spot sir! I've never visited TIDAL before as I assumed they were subscription only. I've also never owned this soundtrack (!), naively assuming that one day it would appear on CD. Perhaps this is as close as we'll get, Mind you, £18 sterling for a download does seem rather expensive. If they can put it on TIDAL, why not elsewhere for about...half the price?

Just found myself on the wikpedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine:_Music_from_the_Motion_Picture) for the OST as well. Interesting to see how many times Adagio in D Minor has been re-used elsewhere including, most recently, Ready Player One.

*EDIT* oh, PS that track did also appear on CD on a 2014 compilation: https://www.discogs.com/Various-Klassik-Lounge-Werk-12/release/6016680

Damn, I always thought this had a CD release as I found a rip in FLAC of their soundtrack CD, which apparently is unofficial. So now I wonder if the CD rip is even actually lossless. I have 2 different variations ripped.

Damn, I hope it goes up on Qobuz. I'd love to have this in lossless.

Wish there was a good way to reach the guys and suggest stuff that needs releasing. I try reaching them on Instagram, but never get a response.

This and Saved From The Cutting Room Floor need a proper lossless release. They also need to re-release the Riverrun Series.

I have luck getting responses from hello@Underworldlive.com. last time I suggested a release of riverrun as it is only available on YouTube I got a boiler plate "no plans for release at this time" response.

I could be wrong, but I had always assumed the lossless rip floating around was from an "unofficial" CD likely made for Academy Award consideration or some similar licensing reasons...

(I also vaguely recall some legal shenanigans around this soundtrack, meaning non-digital released, IIRC, were unlikely).

If riverrun and the like were released physically it would be reviewed and would be admired and appreciated by presumably new admirers also aswell as the media. Seems a waste of amazing music to be left drifting into the abyss. I met Karl Hyde at dogboy show and brought this very fact up about a riverrun release but the response was not very enthusiastic. I think if I'd talked to him about "I exhale" there would have been more interest!

That's such a shame. Don't get me wrong Barbara Barbara had its moments, but personally Riverrun was stronger. It deserves more than it's getting from the UW guys. Such a waste of brilliant music. Out of all of their post-Emerson releases, I revisit Riverrun the most.

I believe it's probably from the CD-r that John Murphy was sending out at the time to some people who would inquire about it. I discussed some of the differences between that and the retail release in the first post of this thread.

I'd post a picture of my CD-r, but I think I must've put it into storage.
