WASHINGTON – Al-Qaida supporters suggested in a Web site message this week they would welcome a pre-election terror attack on the U.S. as a way to usher in a McCain presidency.

The message, posted Monday on the password-protected al-Hesbah Web site, said if al-Qaida wants to exhaust the United States militarily and economically, "impetuous" Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain is the better choice because he is more likely to continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This requires presence of an impetuous American leader such as McCain, who pledged to continue the war till the last American soldier," the message said. "Then, al-Qaida will have to support McCain in the coming elections so that he continues the failing march of his predecessor, Bush."

SITE Intelligence Group, based in Bethesda, Md., monitors the Web site and translated the message.

"If al-Qaida carries out a big operation against American interests," the message said, "this act will be support of McCain because it will push the Americans deliberately to vote for McCain so that he takes revenge for them against al-Qaida. Al-Qaida then will succeed in exhausting America till its last year in it."

Mark Salter, a senior McCain adviser, said he had heard about the Web site chatter but had no immediate comment.

Ta! ;)

I have become a bit of a Troll for Common Sense on CiF of late, simply because there seem to be some really rabid extreme-right-evangelical nutters who come on there (i.e a website for a left-leaning UK newspaper) and tell us we are all marxists, to butt out of their country and we would all be speaking German if it wasn't for them

The idea that the loonies have is that this is all a cunning plan by Al Q'aida to get people to vote for Obama because apparently last time they endorsed Kerry and that failed, so this time they figure the person they endorse will also fail... or something.

Still at least that way, when Obama is in the Whitehouse, the loony right can tell themselves it was all the fault of Al Q'aida for endorsing their man. Convenient that, eh? ;)

Ah of course. If they had spoken similarly about Obama, it would be proof positive that terrorists love the idea of an Obama Presidency. But since it's McCain they were talking about, then clearly, they're employing a strategy of reverse psychology. And right on the heels of Limbaugh enlightening us all to Powell's purely racially motivated endorsement of Obama. I guess we should all just accept that Obama is only getting support because he's a black terrorist.
