they are all very cool, and whether
they should have stayed on the album or

it's interesting to hear them in the context of the album,
and to think about the tracklisting..

It's really incredible, this. I mean, to follow a band so closely for a decade and more and still have something like this turn up. It's just wild that there's still more unheard Underworld music out there -- completed songs, even.

yeah i should clarify that i'm not confused about whats happening, just that i'm pretty goddamn shocked about it.
converting to wav now.
edit: now this is interesting. if they were always on the album, would we somehow think of them better or worse than if we hadnt heard them 15 years after the album release?
they sound pretty... bad to me, aside from organ, which is okay. but had they been on the album, would these be familiar semi-classics instead?
hmm.
edit2: okay i'm starting to like them, but still dont feel anywhere near up to par with anything from dubno... cept M.E.

If these are dubnobass era leftovers and outtakes I can only imagine what might be laying about from the STITI era, but that is a pipe dream at this point as we've been bestowed with quite a luxury thanks to Deckard236.
I'm a bit uncertain about these tracks at the moment. It's funny because at times they sound so foreign but very familiar. You can hear little sounds and tweaks going on that would appear in other forms and on other tracks elsewhere.

I think at worst, these songs would have been regarded as low points of the album, much like Push Downstairs, Air Towel, Ess Gee and other such unpopular album tracks. Every Underworld album comes with one or two non-classics, with the possible exception of Dubnobasswithmyheadman.
I suspect the guys knew what they had created and knew the strengths and weaknesses of each component, and put out the best possible collection of songs they could.

This is pretty cool to see these new old tracks showing up. I guess I like 'Big Meat Show' the most, especially those piano and guitar parts. 'Can U Feel Me' is too much MK1-like, those other two fit way more in the style they presented on Dubnobasswithmyheadman.
Guess those tracks will get a high rotation next weeks on the iPod...

Nice surprise, thx for putting it up!
After a first quick listen, I heard:
- the opening bits of "Tongue" throughout "Big Meat Show"
- the opening sequence of "Organ" is quite similar (higher pitch) to the one in "Lemon Interrupt - Eclipse (remix)" in the recent broadcast
Guess it's mostly leftover from the Lemon Interrupt times.

i don't think we realize how important this find is.... this is unbelievable considering these have been hidden from us for so long - and never even mentioned or known about until now...
i'm very surprised by the fact this has not surfaced until now, but then again - there are probably more things like this out there - at least tracks that have been sent out to test reactions etc - and considering uw had supposedly 180 tracks around the RRP releases this is potentially good news for future 'unheard gems' being released to us...
i'd be interested to see if anything else surfaces...
anyway thanks for sharing its like the holy grail - we didn't even know existed!!!

ok
first of all - "Airtowel" and "Push Downstairs" are NOT the low points of either of the aforementioned album
and secondly OH WOW I haven't even had a chance to listen to the tracks yet... but damn!
I mean - think about it... these songs have NEVER been mentioned or hinted at (towards their existence)
...what about all those other mentioned tracks, that have remained unheard?
...and I really am anxious to hear what R&K have to say about these songs suddenly showing up? Which reminds me... I don't think they ever commented on those MK1* demo's either
*although, I don't really think that those should really be considered as MK1 demo's - as not only is "M.E." amongst them - there are also flourishes here and there that eventually were in some early UW MKII/ Lemon Interrupt/ Steppin' Razor remixes (if memory serves me... Honestly, I didn't care for the demo tracks that much, and haven't listened to them for ages)
...waiting impatiently to finally hear these songs....

wowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowow!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so some responses after hearing the tracks for the first time->
sure, "Can You Feel Me" definitely sounds a bit MK1-ish, and probably wouldn't have fit well amongst the other tracks on the album. But there are definitely bits here and there that REALLY remind me of early Steppin Razor & Lemon Interrupt mixes, which unfortunately - I can't go back and double check which ones, b/c I lost most/all of my remixes from that era when my old computer died :( -> some of the guitar also sounds familiar, like right after Karl says "can you feel me" for the first time... maybe it was in "tongue" (but back in the mix?)
...and that "boop boop boop" sound at the beginning sounds almost exactly like the intro to the Steppin Razor remix of "Thrill Me" just maybe at a slightly different tempo. (No - not the "Steppin Razor Ambient Mix" -> I mean just the "Steppin Razor Mix")
"Big Meat Show" -> it really sounds like a combination of "The Hump" (the growly noises) one of the remixes of "Human Behaviour" (I can't remember which one), bits of "Skyscraper", there's also (obviously) some of the intro of "Tongue" in there too.
"Organ" -> definitely some similarities to "Eclipse" on the intro... and some bits here and there remind me of "Surfboy" although - it seems to be the most 'unique' amongst these 'new' songs, and could have probably fit onto the final version of "Dubno..." the easiest. Although, in all honesty, I think it might work better if it was edited down a little bit.
is it just me - or do these tracks seem to have more 'real' instruments on them than the other 'dubno' tracks? Like, there seems to be noticeably more live bass (or at least what sounds like a bass guitar) on them than other stuff? And 'normal' guitar as well.
also - I'm really intrigued as to how the long version of "River of Bass" sounds....
[EDIT]
um guys....
so I just tracked down my copy of the "MK1 Demo Tape" and what did I find... "Feel Me" but it's a 4 minute version, not 4:25
which makes me wonder -> MMMMMAAAAYYYYBBBEEE the older, previously known MK1 demo tape is from a bit closer to the creation of "Dubno" than we thought. Or at least, closer than what I originally thought...? any ideas?

Sorry it took 15 years to get these out, but it was also kind on nice thinking that I might have one of only a few copies (you guys know what I mean). It is also fun sharing. So based on the fact that I didn't realize that ROB was in fact almost 3 minutes longer than the DNBWHYM version (am I stupid or what?) I am going to put the whole thing up. Seriously. The surfacing of these tracks is like Christmas came early. I used to have dreams about suddenly discovering albums or singles by another band that i love love love (doesn't matter who, but i'm devoted to a level shared by many of the dirties re: UW. Obsessive, that is). This is like one of those dreams, only real! :)
Regarding the Mk1 Demo... i'd only listened a few times, but also tried to spot anything that made it onto Dubno or MkII/L.I. tracks. The staccato guitar is a dead giveaway. If memory serves, the demo is from 90 or 91? But there were a few other bits that i'd like to believe were carried over. Need to give it another spin!

yea - that old MK1 demo is supposedly from 1990...
but now I wonder if it's really from a bit later
at least for me - the time period of UW's history, that I'd say I know the least about is that area around 1990-1993
like WHY the three different band names? I always assumed it was just b/c "Steppin' Razor" was really just Rick & Darren, and "Lemon Interrupt" was a name chosen as a possible different "real" band name (like, maybe they were going to completely abandon "Underworld" - to further differentiate themselves from the 'original' "Underworld")
...but maybe not?
especially when you consider how much carry-over in elements/sounds/whatever you want to call them between the late MK1 demo's, the Steppin Razor remixes, and the early MK2 tracks...?

Big Meat Show 6:51
MMM Skyscraper I Love You 13:01
Organ 6:22
River Of Bass 9:09
Dark And Long 7:30
Dirty Fuzz 9:55
Can U Feel Me 4:30
Goodbye Mother Earth 7:08
This is the original running order and names of songs as they appeared on the original hand written dat. I have used the timings for the songs that were assigned by the CD ripper, keep in mind that timings will always vary depending on how they are calculated (i.e. usually they are timed until the start of the next song ID which is incorrect) I am looking forward to hearing your comments on these. I truly believe that they are no different than the released versions (with the exception of ROB) but I will leave that up to your discerning ears to let me know. Oh, and Can U Feel Me being a very Prince like spelling of you, I always thought that came from the time Karl spent playing on the Terry Nunn album at Paisley Park in 1992. like it's sorta pop-y sorta 'electronic' but still live rock/guitar sounds

can't get enough of the groove of 'big meat show'. loving the song despite the lyrics. karl has/had a thing for waitresses, that much is clear ;)
the channel 69 lyric amidst strong sexual imagery reminds me of dirty epic's sleezy channel 6.
i can imagine if this song had originally been included on the album, the lyrics would have been universally panned and loads of people (probably me) would need to 'overcome' them to really love the track. i am a new order fan so coming to terms with the most awful lyrics is something i'm equipped to handle.
i'm tempted to try to edit this down to a 4 minute instrumental tho. anybody want to give it a shot?

Just at a casual listen-through, I didn't hear any differences except the extended "River of Bass", and the lack of mixing on tracks that are mixed in the album.

Where the hell did these come from? Just been listening to them, and wow, they're very good. Probably wouldn't have worked on the album, but why weren't they released on singles? I know all artists produce a ton of music that never make it to the album or singles, and that's because they suck, but these don't. They're better than most of the b-sides from this era. Where were they all my life?!?!? Now can we get some unreleased tracks from Second Toughest in the Infants, please?!

Surely, these must have been leaked by UW themselves - how else would these tracks have become available now?
I wonder if Karl or Rick might shed some light on this via UWlive.com? Would be great to get some official word on this.
Can someone get in touch with rtsr info - I was registered a few years back but lost the details, registered again yesterday, but God knows how long I might have to wait.

Just to clarify the story of these tracks. I have no affiliation with UW other than being a huge fan since the days of Doot Doot. In 1993 I was working at a mastering facility in L.A. and an acquaintance of mine told me that he was the U.S. manager of the band. He told me that they had some new material and they were looking for a U.S deal and asked for my help. He had a dat of these 10 tracks and asked me to make him copies to give to people in the business to try and get a deal. I made a copy of the dat, a CD which I kept (in 93 one off CD's were still very expensive) and maybe 10 or so cassettes. I kept a few cassettes to give to people that I knew might be interested and gave the rest to him. One of the cassettes I gave to Gene Simmons who I was working with at the time. He called me 2 days later as a courtesy to tell me that he didn't see any commercial potential in these songs, as they were to repetitive, although he liked the song with the line "Christ on Crutches". Anyway nothing came from my efforts, but I now had 10 new tracks from one of my favorite bands. I listened to these tracks for the next year until Dubno came out. Like most of you I found out about Lemon Interrupt and looked hard for every release I could find. With all of the new material that was coming out I stopped listening the the original tracks, and did'nt pull them out again until about 6 years ago when I started transferring my CD's into itunes. It was then that I started doing random internet searches to see if these tracks had ever appeared. Finally last weekend I registered on the forum and here we are. I hope this answers a few questions. As to why they were never released, who knows. Maybe the band didn't put them out because they did'nt think they were good enough (they have used elements of them in other songs) essentially using them as parts. I am hoping that the guys in the front office are not mad at me for making them available.

I made a copy of the dat, a CD which I kept (in 93 one off CD's were still very expensive)
I was wondering about the CD part, because yeah, they were very rare and expensive at that time. But working at a mastering facility certainly explains it.
It sounds like it was quite serendipitous that these tracks survived and finally made their way to us today.

It's so bizarre to listen to this provisional running order, after years of familiarity with Dubno...that album is such a classic and so well integrated (well, maybe save "Surfboy":p) that it always seemed to me like the boys were s deliberate in what they wanted it to sound like. Then i learned that M.E. was largely recycled and that dirty had been around for awhile, too, along with skyscraper. Now, hearing these previously unknown tracks, you get the sense that they were really still in transition from mkI to mkII.
I'm trying hard to hear if anything's different from this to Dubno. The clangy drums on Dark and Long near the end are in a slightly different pattern, but this is all that seems apparent so far.
The new tracks are growers, for sure! Certainly products of their time, but still, i like this early phase of UW with the guitar leads and sharp beats :)
BIG thanks to Deckard, Negative1 and RTSR's for sharing!

do any of the lyrics for big meat show appear on the dubno artwork or skyscraper book?
you know...
I'll check this evening...
I would imagine, probably yes
...and about the sequencing of the prototype version vs the final...
while I can see 'Dirty Epic' starting out the album (Skyscraper could work as well, but anyways...)- "Dark & Long" just DOES NOT work as a track in the middle of the album at all!
or am I the only one?
[edit]
I found a page with "Big Meat Show" lyrics on it!!!
it really wasn't too hard... I kinda just flipped through the pages, and if it seemed like the words were random/spoonman/dirty epic/cowgirl/skyscraper, I just went on to the next
I don't know what page the lyrics are on though... maybe about 30 or so pages in?
on my printing (at least -> it's the one from '99) - the Big Meat Show lyrics are on a page that looks like:
black vertical bar going along the spine (inside) of the page (it covers about 1/3 of the width of the entire page)
to the left of it - is solid white, with the lyrics written in black
the first printed line is "waitress working in a"
the last printed line is "channel69"
(edit 2)
I just realized it would also help if I said what was on the opposite (right) page
basically solid white page with black text:
"boy makes sound like a pig boy makes sound like a bomb like a bird like a snake like a machine gun cartoon"
...there's a ton of text - but nothing that was actually used in any songs - but some phrases that come close

i think the DAT wasn't meant to represent an LP but rather some finished tracks. taking the DAT's listing as an LP tracklist is a step in the wrong direction. i doubt anybody connected with UW thought that sequence of songs would be released in that exact order. it was meant to shop around the music to get a deal according to deckard. thinking of that order as an album order is misguided.

Yes, BrotherLovesDub, that is my feeling also. I never thought of this as a finished sequence for an album, especially since Dubno and all future albums have quite a few crossfades on them. These tracks also contain 2 remixes (I didn't know that at the time) so it just makes sense that they were a just a sampling of the type of songs the band was creating, showing any potential label that was interested that this is the music we create and we also do remixes. Just my thoughts.

please be aware of who you are sharing with. it's one thing to pass this around the 'true' fans (i.e. those who don't try to profit from UW's music) but another to just blindly allow assholes like JPV to download them then sell for a profit on ebay or wherever.

The new tracks all sound like MKI songs with MKII elements in them. I think they don't quite fit in with the mood of dubno. Not that they are bad, but I can see why they were cut. Plus, NO COWGIRL??? WTF? Thank the gods, buddahs, shamans, and whoever else that they didn't release dubno without cowgirl! Plus, Spoonman, Tongue, and Surfboy are missing. Makes the album just sound strange.

Thanks a bunch, I was always fascinated at now UW mk1 became mk2. Listening to the mk1 albums (which I enjoy but don't see as having much replay value) it's hard to imagine those guys were talented at all, much less capable of something as great as dubnobass, so it's nice to see the connection - these three tracks DO sound like they began as mk1 compositions, and if you hear the 1990 mk1 demo you can see they were starting to change direction a bit. Although it's techincally mk2 the "Mother Earth/The Hump" single did just sound like the mk1 band with a bit of DJ input. I really admire what became of "M.E." for the album. In a way I see dubnobass as being the 'full realization' of the sort of electronic music that much of the 80's was going for. It's easy to see many of those tracks done in a cheap New Romantic style. However with Emerson's help they really got the right idea and made a fantastic album, the likes of which probably will never come again, considering that Underworld had, in retrospect, the perfect history to create an album with that feel. This DAT version doesn't have the tracks that kind of buck that trend ("Cowgirl", "Spoonman") so that influence is a bit clearer now. Thanks for sharing!

i seriously disagree with your assumption on the wiki that the tracks on the DAT are an alternate or prototype running order for dubnobass. there's nothing to suggest that. simply sticking tracks on a DAT to try to get a deal does not equal sequencing tracks for an album.

Unfortunately, I think the problem is that it isn't "notable enough" for wikipedia. The dubno page may be the best place for it (because it would be deleted if it had it's own page), but I don't think this info should be placed next to the dubno information.
While we are on the subject of Wikipedia, does anyone have the know-how to set up a dedicated UW wiki? I now noticed many of the old UW singles pages have been deleted. They had info on them I considered very valuable. Certainly we could make a much better wiki with more info on it.

Yup, it's still on the project list. Someday, it will happen.
I stopped contributing anything to Wikipedia because their policies don't allow for the kind of stuff we want to add. For example, your prototype stuff, -1, would be deleted if anyone reviewed it, because it falls under original research (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:OR).
I did make a copy of all the Underworld content on WP before all those singles pages were deleted.

okay; my take:
organ:
this is not a bad song at all; it would've fit well as a b side on a lemon interrupt record; it's at least as good as minneapolis and better than eclipse. nice groove.
big meat show:
i'm surprised noone has mentioned the humour in this song yet. it obviously wasn't meant to be released. when i first saw 'big meat show' i thought 'okay... underworld has some strange titles sometimes', but i didn't think it would actually be about a big ole dingus! besides that, the music is good; there's bits of tongue and several other things in there- it's not bad, but it was obviously cutting room floor material.
can u feel me:
sounds like a cover of someone else, can't put my finger on it. no big instrumentals or anything as far as i know; not listening too closely. it's not stellar so i see why it didn't go on the album. it fits in the mood of 'mother earth' in that it's more of a traditional song.
will comment more about the rest later.
