View Full Version : New Live CD's - Brixton Academy Oct. 31 & Nov. 1

I wanted to break this discussion out of the uwlive.com thread, because I think it deserves some more focus.
To recap:
1. New live CD's for the Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 Brixton shows are available for (pre-)order at underworldlive.com. £15 each. These will NOT be available for purchase at the show. Only on the website.
2. Those who order the CD's will be given MP3 download links within hours after the show.
3. The other purchase option for the 2 shows is WAV download which will be available on Nov. 10. £10 each.
4. Underworld will be handling distribution rather than Live Here Now (although I believe LHN is still producing the shows).
5. Old LHN shows from 2007-2008 are also available on underworldlive.com for £12 each.
Now, UW seems to have addressed a lot of the concerns (complaints?) that were voiced in the previous live cd thread (http://www.darktrain.org/dirty/forums/showthread.php?t=6794). First of all, there is a download option now with the WAV's. Also, the added bonus of immediate MP3 downloads for those who purchased the CD's. Well done, I say.
Also, there's the distribution of the CD's being handled themselves (or rather, a fulfillment company), rather than the mess that Live Here Now left. I assume this is the same company that's been fulfilling orders for the rest of the merchandise on the underworldlive.com Shop, and I believe everyone that's ordered stuff so far (The Bells The Bells, etc.) has been happy with it? And it came much faster than the 3-20 weeks that LHN took?
Regarding the pricing, for the WAV download, I think it's fair. To compare, Pearl Jam was charging US$15 for FLAC shows during 2005-6 and Depeche Mode charged US$20 for lossy downloads of their 2006 shows. So I think Underworld's pricing falls fairly in there. For the CD's, £15 seems a tad high, but really nothing to complain about or make me not want to buy them. The older shows at £12 each now though are certainly more attractive. And I guess we have to remember the £15 shows come with the immediate MP3 gratification now too.
The only suggestion I have is regarding the WAV's. Pretty much all players support losslessly compressed audio these days. I don't see any reason why these shouldn't be offered in FLAC and Apple Lossless formats. If those 2 formats were offered, I think it would cover 99% of computers and mobile players, and everyone would save about 50% in disk space and bandwidth. And by offering those formats, they can also be distributed with metadata that WAV doesn't support, like Song and Artist tags and song and album artwork.
I have a feeling the Brixton shows will be something special. I'm jealous of those that get to go, and happy that those that can't go can buy the CD's.

Nice one! Congrats and great choice of wedding tunes.possible honeymoon stop!
As for the latest LHN recording, i'd go for that WAV option. Not placing too much confidence in the delivery of the discs on time. i'm happy to burn my own. ;)

But . . . the artwork. :( And besides, it should be fine with LHN no longer handling distribution.

this times infinity. i dont understand how a pdf replaces real product.
so why do we put up with that for the book of jam?
it doesn't replace it, who said that? it is something that
fills the gap, instead of having nothing...
they're perfectly fine, if you want to print out your own..
and want to save money, etc..
that being said, its a trade off...get it directly downloaded,
without the risk ....
or pray, that your order will actually make it out to you.. hopefully
the same year..

are we perfectly fine with book of jam pdfs? or do we always rather wish that it would all see the light of day in physical format, whether collected or individually?
i mean that pretty much proves my point, people are alwyas asking for a print version, and it's only not happening with more people because we secretly think a physical version will surface sooner or later.
and again, this is through uwlive.com.
not LHN
LHN doesn't even sell them anymore.
i live 70 miles away from the goddamn pacific and my socks got there well within 14 days.
you're shelling out a tenner for the wav just so that you can hold a bootleg product.
i mean do what you want, by all means, but assuming that a pdf and home printing is a decent stand in for the real thing is going 64kbps on the visual

Even the LHN site directs you to uwlive.com now:
http://www.liveherenow.com/Artistbio.asp?ArID=205
I'd like to think it's because UW wanted to resolve the distribution problems with LHN, but whatever the reason, fulfillment should no longer be the nightmare it was earlier this year.

Just pre-ordered the upcoming shows, hope indeed that it will something special!
Along with those I ordered the Brussels and Rotterdam shows from last year, nice we can order all those old ones now from UWlive. Oh and the socks, didn't know they were actualy for sale. Can't wait to actualy were them :)
I don't see why anything should go wrong this time, when they sold the Tokyo-discs a couple of years ago through eBay everything went fine as well, so don't understand the worries mentioned above... (guess I understand -1 nick a bit more...)

Well - if this adds to anyone's concerns - I ordered 3 of the shows shortly BEFORE the site went down for maintenance for a couple days and still haven't received them.
What's that, now? 2-3 weeks anyways... I'm in Canada, don't really care, but it has been a little on the slower side. No biggie, IMHO, but passing this along for an FYI to anyone who IS concerned with slow delivery.

10-28-2008, 07:35 PM
so when purchased, you download the mp3s of the show as posted on the site, and receive the CDs in physical format through the post?
or just the mp3s become available?
(sorry, first time poster)
TheBang
10-28-2008, 08:41 PM
For the Brixton shows only, yes, if you pre-order the CD's, you get the MP3's for download hours after the gig finishes, and then the CD's show up in the mail a week or two later.
Alternatively for the Brixton shows, instead of ordering the CD's, you can wait until Nov. 10, and buy the WAV files online.

Yes, despite my trying not to get my hopes up, I've been checking every half hour or so. I'm beginning to suspect that maybe Rick needs sleep for tomorrow's show and/or there is insufficient Internet access to get it uploaded to the server. So, I'm thinking it's possible we might not see anything until Sunday. But I'm sure they will get it to us as soon as they possibly can.
Anyone know exactly what section of your account the download will appear in?

UWlive is back up. There is an image of which can be downloaded that says:
"1st November 2008. Pre-Order bonus material available to download by 9am (GMT) 2nd November."
by definition, that's still 'just hours after' :P
I'd wager there might be some confusion now that I reread the graphic. Not sure if that is referring to the Nov 1st show, or that today is Nov 1st and both downloads will be available that time.
hello- should be there now,

i just pre-ordered both nights at Brixton ($58USD). looking forward to hearing the shows now. Peach Tree is one of my favs and the version in Brussels could have started off a bit smoother. Hopefully this one will have a clean intro without galloping beats cluttering the start.
when you login, it should be in your download list on your account page.

i too have spent the money but i'm not going to complain because i realize it's 1 or 2 people working on this, not a whole company. i also realize i paid the money for the CD's, not the downloads. the downloads are a gift, a freebie.

I think it is much too soon to be expecting them. I wasn't expecting them to be mastered and ready to ship until the 10th, and that is at the very earliest. (I think this is a date the UWLive shop listed, maybe for the .wav downloads) If the downloads aren't going to be ready by then, I really doubt that the CD's will.

any missing goods just pump me a PM - and i'll have a look. there was a bit of an outage and the server went bingo- not lost anyones stuff, just the downloader went wonky. it doesnt take me a sec to see if you have stuff, and i can add your missing goodness in a point and click!
dont forget - you had to have 'preordered' to get the download. people that order the none preorder sorry you missed the madness this time around.

No, they're CD-R. If they were DVD-R, they wouldn't play in CD players. I've seen all kinds of CD-R colors over the years. Light green, dark green, gold, black, blue. DVD-R's are usually purple.

Agree with Dubman. I'd rather hear the whole concert to get the tracks in context, with their unique transitions and any special improvs. Plus, the order of at least the first show's setlist looked interesting/random/different than the usual.
yeah, you guys should know that no two UW concerts are the same. No matter how many times you've heard NUXX, it's arrival in the context of the show as a complete event always brings the chills :D
Still, i'm most interested in hearing Strumpet for the newness of it (yes, i know it's been kicking around for years. But the 2000 Electraglide version sounds very different than what i could majke out from the video on RTSR).

well -
I'm DEFINITELY going to be getting an entire show... not just individual tracks (that would be just crazy)
But - my plan on buying these actual LHN cd's is thus:
I'm only buying shows with 'unique' set lists, that have "new songs" or improv's that aren't that common
what I meant about the show from the 10th was... well - wouldn't you guys agree with me that some shows (while yes, everyone is UNIQUE in of themselves) are not quite as 'special' as others
like while you might have three shows from the same tour that all have ...say "Push Upstairs" for example - one version might have a cool poem before it or a weird breakdown in the middle - while the other two might sound pretty similar amongst each other
make sense?
AND I FINALLY GOT DONE WITH MY GRE!!!!!
(yes, I'm lame and the first thing I did after I got home was check on this MB - I need to just shut off my thinking)

congrats!
yeah i get that.
in an ideal world, i'd have all 15 LHN cds, but out of necessity i have to pick and choose, so i got manchester because it had the best guitar for glam bucket and bamboo. and roundhouse 2 because i saw it happening online and it was amazing, and roundhouse 4 because the playlist was great. im also planning amsterdam, koln, and brussels because they look like great sets too. (and any of those people really recommend. guys?)
i preordered the brixton shows because it just felt like it'd be something special. and it was. oich oich, original born slippy, peach tree, banstyle, parc, dirty epic, spoonman, and the two new excellent ones.

two shows labeled -007 you mean?

No (http://www.darktrain.org/dirty/forums/showpost.php?p=80774&postcount=21)
But I know what you mean. That show, London 28.02.2008, has -007 incorrectly on the packaging, but it does have the correct -014 number on the disc labels. On the other hand, there are two shows with -013.

My two arrived today (listening/re-living no.2 as I type) I am loving new track Strumpet (new to me anyway) - it has that dark, haunted Eastern European pine forest vibe that I sooo adore, shared with Skym and Something Like a Mama from BF, and parts of I'm a Big Sister ep
These (almost) instant live playback cds are just fantastic! It's been great to hear Spoonman in full - on the night, at that point, I just HAD to take a pee break - 2 pints of cider with King of Snake and Stimpee in the pre-gig pub, plus an extra one in the academy, took its toll - lol

No offence TheBang but I know that. What I meant was that these live cds are almost "instant" i.e. at previous gigs, you could pick them up 15 mins or so after the gig finished.
And who is "instantlive"?? Once upon a time we had....

Anyone know the answer to this? I myself was waiting for the WAV downloads. On UW Live, if you go to the shop and the CD/Vinyl/DVD section, it says that the live at Brixton recordings will be up as WAV downloads on 10/11/08...that being a few days ago. It gives a link, and it brings you to the digital downloads area of the shop, and the Brixton shows aren't there. What is going on?

Got both nights in one package on Friday (to Poland)
Great setlist. New stuff and Pearl's Girl with synth sweeps! I've noticed a disturbing tendency to leave them out recently despite the fact that the synth sweeps are what make Pearl's Girl so special and put UW among Gods.
No Juanita!:(
Anyone who reckons the sound quality is "amazing" is mistaken. It's way below the quality of the re-scheduled Roundhouse show and Oblivion Ball. Muffled and rumbly. The Roundhouse recordings even capture the crowd better (including that goon who keeps going "ooooooooo-OOOOOOOOO" every so often;))

Pearls Girl certainly benefits from the synth sweeps but.......................
I love the kickass version on the 2006 Nicecast audio cast.
Blistering pace. I noticed at the Brussels gig this year there was a similar version albeit slowed down as i dont think we will ever see a Pearls Girl speed live like the Nicecast!

Here's your answer on the Brixton downloads:
http://www.underworldlive.com/shop
Service Update: We are currently installing new servers to help us manage the demand for delivery of digital products. As a result we are delaying adding the Brixton Academy CD Quality Downloads to the shop until the servers are installed and have been tested. Please accept our apologies.
Not surprising, as each download would be over 1 GB.

Well i received my two lovely cds today, in Australia, Which i think is pretty good going. Better than the wait from LiveHereNow. Although i never really had any problem with them.
Looking sexy on the shelf with the other 12 live discs and sounding great through my new stereo too.

Hello everyone, I'm new here but a big fan of the band.
I was there on Halloween and ordered the CD shortly afterwards, I'm yet to receive it or any links to the MP3's.
Is there a problem with the orders?
TheBang
12-05-2008, 09:50 AM
No problems with the orders. You only received the MP3 download links if you PRE-ordered the CD's.
If it's been longer than like 3 weeks, and you haven't received anything, then you should make an inquiry. Either sales@underworldlive.com or support@underworldlive.com should be able to help (I forget which).

The two Brixton gigs are now available for download purchase in CD (WAV) quality:
http://www.underworldlive.com/shop/digital-audio.html
They are being fulfilled through Live Here Now's servers, rather than through underworldlive.com.
They cost £12 each, instead of the originally announced £10; however, they also come with "an exclusive poster designed by John Warwicker." I assume this is not a physical poster you receive, but rather a digital one included with the download, most likely of the album artwork.

It's 10 pounds for me, making 12,06 Euros.
/edit: downloading the second gig now, it's one big 1,2 GB file, smooth at 800kb/sec
/edit2: worked all perfectly for me, the poster is a 8MB JPG in the black and white scratchy style.
Also included is a high quality PDF of the Cover
sound quality is crisp, although I think the put a bit too much of the ambience mic on it, so you get a bit more reverb compared to earlier LiveCD.
But hey, maybe this increases the live experience ;)
