what a fucking shame! dfw was a brilliant writer, a brilliant speaker, and a brilliant teacher.

I know it's really none of our business, but I'm aching to discover what lead to this.

I've been wondering this myself since I heard the news and wondered if there might have been any sort of note or letter left behind.

im going with the angle of too smart for his own good. you know, the borderline manic-depressive type that can go along with being brilliant. I've seen him speak and he certainly didn't seem easy-going and carefree. ;)

potatobroth, a co-worker and I were thinking something similar in regards to him taking his life, ie. too smart for his own good.

It looks like clinical depression was one of the primary catalysts in the suicide of David Foster Wallace according to the following piece published by Salon. There are quite a few details about the remaining weeks of his life and quotes from his mother, father, and sister.
