does anyone know of any free mastering software for mac? (excluding audacity)

i need to do some basic limiting and i would also like some tips for limiting without really limiting. for instance, i have transferred a few songs over from records and occasionally the volume will spike to the full 1 dB limit for a millisecond or so, and i would like to know how to level those out with the rest of the music without damaging the dynamics of the music in general.

thanks!

You could try Soundtrack Pro. I haven't really used it at all, but I'd imagine it would have a limiter plugin in it.

The kind of limiting you're talking about doing, is just lowering the limiter's threshold to something like -0.5db or even -0.2db, that way it will only activate at the very peaks of the sound. Just make sure the attack and the release is very short (if there are settings for this in your plugin).

you could play with the attack as well if you are noticing any drops in volume/gain. chances are, it's going to be really tiny adjustments that will give you the best results.

I don't know of anything free, but Amadeus Pro is extremely capable for a reasonable price:

well, it's not really the best thing quality wise, but you can always compress the audio
