Venetian Snares is very much underrated. Listen to Rossz Csillag Alatt Szulerett's for an amazing album.

Sigur Ros, not overrated at all but only seemingly known for the "Planet Earth" song;)

Radiohead - see The Bends

I really like that album actually.

It's just that I hear a lot of people say "Venetian Snares is fucking genious", and I'm thinking "well no, most of it is just a bunch of beats cut up and it doesn't really do anything".

I think some of the bands on the list were lauded early on, but the honeymoon period definitely ended. Take Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Sigur Ros, for example...they each had that huge album that defines their career (e.g. "Experience", "Dig Your Own Hole", "Homework"/"Discovery", "Aegetis Byrjun"), followed by some so-so albums that the critics don't take too kindly to.

Rolling Stones, i definitley agree with...In a career as long as theirs, of course you have a lot of hit singles and fan faves from their endless touring. But i have to say, looking back on a lot of their albums, there's a bunch of bluesy crap filler. just one man's opinion ,though!

Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk, Sigur Ros,

I have seen new CD's by all of these artists for £5 or less in the past week, I considered buying them and I thought about why I don't own them already... Because they are shit.

Other contenders in Spooky Shoes world...

Coldplay.
Oasis.
Blur.
Madonna.
The Killers.

I'm getting wound up just thinking about it...

Edit:

Anyone who thinks the Rolling Stones are overrated is plain wrong. That's one of the best bands in the history of music.
In a proper context they WERE one of the best bands in music history but have failed to relaese anything of significance for a very long time, I'm glad The Beatles, Beach Boys and Queen are defunct.

That's right the right word, history. From the perspective of a person who has not lived in that time, he can objectively listen to bands like the Rolling Stones and Beatles. He enjoys them very much, but thinks they are overrated.

- Radiohead - I just don't get it.

- The Smiths: I too never understood the huge obession with them in the 80s. I give them props for "How Soon is Now?" but I curse them for "Girlfriend in a coma".

- The Rolling Stones: Were great, but now, they are one step away from doing radio gingles for Viagra.

- My Chemical Romance - please stop and fizzle out soon, please.

- Metallica: They used to be so good but once the "Black Album" came out, there was no turning back.

Hybrid

I kinda know what you mean, but their debut, Wide Angle" was just sooo good, with the symphonic score and killer breaks, it was like little else, so i think much of the praise was deserved. But no more!...they've tried twice to redo that style, to worse and worst results. As a regular over at the hybridized.org forums, i've seen a backlash from among the fans.

Okay, i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Brian Wilson. I feel bad doing so, too, because the vast majority of his songs written for/with the Beach Boys were ahead of their time.

But now, hmmm, not so sure about all the praise. He's certainly had a rough time of it, with nervous breakdowns and all. To see him perform now is kind of sad, because he's trying like hell but just not all there. So, when critics say "SMiLE!" is the greatest thing ever, i feel like they're giving him the sympathy vote.

Thing is... I like some of these groups, but they sure are overrated.I can't let this slide.....the BEATLES? The only way you can even try to justify this is by completely removing context from the argument. The Beatles were a landmark group that really pushed music into new territory - especially when you consider that they started out basically as a boy band.

I mean seriously, how do you justify calling the Beatles overrated?

oh and bjorkHOLY CRAP! I need to get in on this thread big time. Pink Floyd? Led Zeppelin? U2? Another against The Beatles? Part of a bands "rating" depends very much on the context of when their music came out, not just whether or not it's something that would be at the top of the charts right now. Although interestingly, all of the bands I take issue with you on created music decades ago that still sounds fresh and imaginative, even by contemporary standards.

And you people claim to have knowledge about music. You disgust me. ;)

Underworld aren't overrated in the sense that they are today getting automatic acclaim on new work because of their old work, but if 100 Days Off and Oblivion With Bells came out as their first albums, they wouldn't be as well known.

Jay-Z is very very very overrated.

I agree with you Sean, there are a lot of old bands names being bandied around and being taken out of context. The likes of the beatles, stones, pink floyd, led zep gave influences that are still used by a lot of todays bands and could never be thought of as overrated- and that stands whether you like them or not.;)

the issue here is not influence, The Beatles, Led Zep etc. were, and still are, some of the most influential bands ever

but for a band like Led Zep to come out of retirement and try and relive the old days is imo, a reason for overratedness, the guys standing there stumming old tunes to world acclaim is bullshit... the time, and place has changed and history shouldn't try to be repeated imo - the second coming of these acts is purely and simply self gratificating money making on behalf of the bands, and is done for no other reason than massaging the egos of the members - hence they are being overrated (and do these tours because they have been overrated)

If Led Zep were not that overrated they should have played more dates at reasonable prices in venues similar to that they played when they were at their best...

Taken in context, a vast number of Beatles tracks are not that good... yep they improved and made some awesome albums, and influenced people but still... some of the Beatles output is pretty weak, formulaic and gash

there are loads of new bands today that have influence and are making fresh and new sounds, but even they get above their stations and enter the realms of overratedness... it effects most acts that become darlings of the music media... success breeds overratedness

i think peoples perceptions of how good bands were and still are, is due to the fact that they are so overrated... Led Zepplin being the prime example...

for a band being overrated doesn't mean that they are shit, just that some people think too highly of them...

and there's nothing wrong with liking an overrated band...

Rog
03-27-2008, 06:00 AM
