Not sure if this means much to ayone outside the UK, but here goes:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/hi/music/newsid_7252000/7252803.stm

The host of Radio 1's Drum & Bass show, Grooverider (perhaps best known as half of Fabio and Grooverider) has been jailed for 4 years in Dubai after admitting posession of 2.16 grammes of cannabis.

holy crap. I know punishment for drug-related offenses are high in a lot of other countries (esp compared over here in holland of course) but 4 years prison for cannabis posession?!
Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

i'm pretty sure most of my friends have 2.6 grams of weed spread out in their carpet alone. luuuudicrous.

A lot of governments don't understand drugs, it's best not to travel with them.

shiiiiiiiiiiitttttt

that sucks. I mean, I'll admit - I haven't listened to his stuff in years. but still...

on the other hand
he really should've not flown with pot, I mean - isn't it at least "a little illegal" pretty much everywhere (save for a few places here and there)

and seriously... come on - the UAE is a Muslim country

but - how much is 2.16 grammes? I'm horrible with weight stuff... is that like an eighth? or just enough for a joint?

my dad told of an article in the daily mail where one lad was sentanced in Saudi for 4 years for having a spec of weed on his shoe, which was so small it was invisible to the naked eye. it got worse, another got 4 years for a few poppy seeds in the fluff of his pocket; the fact that they came from the topping of a bread roll carried no weight in court.

how true both stories are i wouldn't like to say, i mean its not as if associated newspapers have a history of being economicable with the facts when they get in the way of a good story, now do they!?!

I read the same article on the BBC website a while back. here you all go:

Here's to hoping Grooverider appreciates the irony of being on the BBC payroll.

Never wanted to go to Dubai anyway. If all you want is sand and over-expensive hotels, Marbella or Nice will do the trick nicely. :)

sure, Dubai's laws may be a bit harsh, to say the least.
but either him or his agent both deserve a swift kick in the ass for being that stupid.
he got caught with 2 grams of weed, in a country that has a zero tolerancy towards drugs. he then belittled the ways of the country, even poking at the legal system there.
and to boot, he pled not guilty.
not guilty, to weed found in his pants pocket, or luggage, whatever.
he's lucky he only got 4 years.
at least he still has a pulse.
im sure his next album will be a ' hit ' .

wow you actually managed to play devil's advocate towards a guy whose life is essentially ruined for the sake of a nug. I know i've taken the mantle from time to time, but this is impressive. :)

his life isn't ruined.
he still has a pulse.
he ( or his agent ) made the choice to play in a country that has such harsh ( and well known ) rules against dope...and he's a fucking pothead.
go figure.
i bet if he pled guilty, he wouldn't be doing 4 years.

...and he's a fucking pothead.
I kind of agree with this sentiment. Pot heads are generally tedious and at least semi-righteous twats in my experience.
i bet if he pled guilty, he wouldn't be doing 4 years.
Not so, I believe it's a mandatory 4 year sentence no matter how small the amount you're caught with.

i really dont see a reason to respect the law where it says if you have pot you get jailed for 4 years.

different strokes and all, and yeah, probably shouldnt have been so careless, but it's still a retarded sentence any way you slice it.

Agreed. That's a bit harsh for a crime that was basically only hurting himself. Though not exactly the same thing, what about habitual drinkers or smokers? They're doing similar harm, but not jailed for it. If you want to waste away, go for it, but it's not really a crime if you're only hurting yourself. Ramifications of the addiction are a different story if they negatively affect other people.

Where's Jack the Ripper? In jail for 4 years.

patrick

ya honest, the 4 years in PRISON is also going to do way more harm to a person than smoking weed would in like 99.9% of people...

Fucked up law, but this is nothing to do with respecting it. Simply a matter of risk calculation - or, depending on your point of view, stupidity.

Sure I feel a bit sorry for the guy, though truthfully I'd probably have been more gutted if it had been Fabio locked up.

wow sixth grade all over again. nice. anyway the dude has his freedom taken away in a cell that while maybe isn't a gulag, still houses 6 men in a cramped space, a situation in which the lot of you finger wagging hecklers would cry yourself to sleep at night, if it happened to you. fact.

yeah that's a lot of testosterone.

we'd have to elaboately recreate scenes of male bonding, like fishing and stuff
or i could just sleep on my back.

for me I imagine something like kiss of the spiderwoman.

anyway who cares I fucking hate drum and bass. bought photek's modus operandi like 12 years ago and walked away from the whole tossing scene. just not my cuppa.

I also liked ltj bukem's stuff a lot but I caution mentioning him as some of you, I'm sure, see him as much an example of drum and bass artist as moby is techno.

shhiitt. i totally just remembered the existence of roni size. god what a time in music....
