This is awesome news. Was hoping to attend WMC this year and see UW at Ultra on the 29th; however, financially can't afford the Miami Madness this year. I am still in shock. Only an hour drive from my house! The venue is small and intimate. Saw Air there a few years back. Tix go on sale Thurs 10 AM EST. should be a good one. Opening local dj is quite good. Can't wait! :D

What new version? If you mean the one with the mellow guitar intro which was first heard in a lemonworld broadcast (12/05, i think) and was on myspace for awhile, it seems that this new intro is a Darren Price composition, Nicodemus, i think.

Or is there something different?

for anyone flying in, it looks like the venue is within reasonable walking distance of the MARTA train station at Arts Center. That's sandwiched between peachtree and w. peachtree, and between 15th and 16th street. so a block and a half over, a block down.

i've lived here for 8 years but i've never been to this venue. i work right by the arts center station so i take the train in every day. i think i'll check out the walk to center stage on monday just to see how doable it is.

figured folks might want to know, if they're coming in from out of town and thinking about where to book a hotel. you might be able to save $$ and forego the car rental if you get a room near a MARTA station. and in case you've never been here, the southern most stop on the Marta north/south line is in the airport terminal. you could get off your plane and go straight to the arts center station in just about 30 minutes.

this may not be helpful to anyone, but i figured i'd throw that out there.

Hell, I am sure I must cry at least once during every UW gig I go to.

I am so lucky I live in the UK and can access the European gigs. I know how much it means to my Stateside UW friends to have the guys play within 500 miles of them, much less their own city.

long-time lurker...first time posting. (even though i've been registered for nearly a year)

i cannot tell you how excited i am to be seeing u/w in atl. an easy 2 hour (125 mile) drive from my house. was going to fly out to red rocks, but couldn't afford it and was crushed. now this atl gig comes up - how amazing.

i've been to 1 concert at this venue and it is an amazing place. the location is okay (not too close to many restaurants/bars), but the actual venue is awesome. http://www.centerstage-atlanta.com/ it should be an amazing time. not sure about making it for a meet-up. depends what time the wife and i get off work and get down there.

i'll go back to lurking now...

cacophony
02-19-2008, 06:08 AM
so this morning i got off the train and decided to walk down to w. peachtree and 17th to see how far it would be. it was so damn close that i could stand on the corner and look one way to see the venue, and look the other way and still see the train station. it was so close that i turned around and walked back the other way and still made it to work on time.

i would highly recommend that anyone coming in from out of town consider taking the train into the show and not bothering with the hassle of parking.

dirtyatl
02-19-2008, 06:30 AM
I too would suggest taking marta to the show. For those of you planning on going to the Spotted Dog before or after the show marta's North Avenue station is right next door (literally), two stops down from the Arts Center Station.

For those of you travelling in town, there is a small cluster of hotels near the Midtown & North Avenue stations.

Sounds good guys, really appreciate the tips!

But it looks like the last trains leave Arts Center at about 9:30 pm? What time does this city go to sleep? :)

cacophony
02-19-2008, 01:45 PM
that's because their user interface sucks. notice that they have TWO stations listed with the abbreviation "NOR." because that makes total sense. you're probably looking at the north springs schedule, which is why you're seeing the service stop.

this is going to be way too much information, but here we go:

here's the deal: there are two north/south lines. north springs and doraville. the doraville and north springs line are identical right up to lindburgh station, where they split like a Y. get on the right train and you don't have to transfer.

however, after 9:30 trains stop going all the way from the airport to north springs. after 9:30 if you're south of lindburgh and want to head northwest, you have to catch a doraville train and switch at lindburgh center (the very next stop) to transfer to a north springs train. travel on from there.

but basically if you're going to get a hotel around midtown station or north avenue station, you're travelling south and the service switch doesn't affect you one bit. every southbound train coming through that station goes where you want to go, up until around 1:30 a.m.

if you're travelling north after the show, you'll have to hop on a northbound doraville train. then either transfer at lindburgh to head northwest or stay on the doraville train to head northeast.

here's the doraville schedule so you can see what i mean. (http://www.itsmarta.com/getthere/schedules/tables/rte_NE_W.htm)

gillenium
02-19-2008, 02:19 PM
I actually found a few hotels that are (supposedly) within walking distance of the venue. Those were about $129 total for one night. Would the hotels near the station really be much cheaper?

geoff
02-19-2008, 03:04 PM
LOL, thanks cacophony. I get it now... :D (I was indeed looking at the North Springs schedule.)

So it seems you can still get anywhere you need to go up until 1:30 or so.

What are the names of hotels within walking distance? Do they have vancancies for that weekend? If I have to get a hotel farther, does the city have a "curfew"? ie. what time do shows usually end? I would hate to get stranded by the MARTA if we're out too late...

if marta is determining your curfew, consider yourself cut off at 2:00 a.m. you'll want to do any travelling around prior to that. of course there are always cabs, but it's not like you can just step up to the curb and flag one down.

i love the little buildings on that map. you can see my building where i work! NE corner of 14th and peachtree, called colony square. which, i should add, is an excellent place to find a bunch of relatively cheap eateries if you're staying nearby and you're watching your pennies while you're in town. it's basically like a mall food court without the mall (starbucks, chick fil a, great wraps, blimpie, moes, goldberg's deli and a few chinese options). it's open weekends as well as weekdays. there's also a lovely thai place right in the front of the 100 colony square building. and there's a lovely, if a bit pricier, place called shout in the same building. there's another place called TAP across the street if you're looking for drinks, and if you really feel like a fine meal you can head west on 14th from colony square (cross over peachtree) to have a much pricier plate at a place called trio. it's marvelous, but you're not getting out of there cheap.

It's only 1 block away from the gig, and close to the MARTA station as well. Here's a google map that shows all three:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=1374+West+Peachtree+St+NW,+Atlanta,+Fulton,+ Georgia+30309,+United+States&daddr=1365+Peachtree+Street,+Atlanta,+GA&mra=pe&mrcr=0&sll=33.809752,-84.409989&sspn=0.051633,0.060167&ie=UTF8&ll=33.79189,-84.386029&spn=0.006206,0.007521&z=17

from where your start point is pinned, you're easily walking distance to the venue. no need to drive and loop up to get around the one way street that is 17th.

Nice. I'm staying at this hotel, too! Thanks for the restaurant info. I was worried that it might be hard to find a cheap place to eat. When I saw Chemical Brothers in Brooklyn, there was only one place to eat around my hotel (in a bad part of town. It was closest so we ate there, lol). Some of the best pizza I've ever had.

That's not much of a question... the Varsity is what Atlanta is famous for.... HOWEVER, if you are vegetarian or have a hard time with grease, avoid at all costs...

There's lots of food nearby, just make your way to peachtree street and walk south... The VORTEX is there and has excellent burgers, a great beer selection ,etc

What food is Atlanta famous for?..

well it's the south so you can always get your hands on good soul food. i recommend a place called eats (http://atlanta.citysearch.com/profile/2998967) on ponce de leon. they serve all kinds of stuff but if you're looking for traditional southern meat-and-two or meat-and-three or collard greens, etc, that's a good place to start. really casual and cheap, too.

it's like any other major city. every style of food is represented in one way or another. please please please don't consider the varsity. like crank said, it's greasy and really terrible. i think people only continue to go there and recommend it because they've been doing so for generations. somehow the pop culture surrounding the place hasn't diminished in spite of the fact that the food is worse than generic fast food. really really terrible.

definitely check out the vortex. and if you are renting a car or have a friend in town to show you around, visit little 5 points (http://www.l5p.com/). awesome shops including my favorite record store, a place called wax 'n' facts (http://www.myspace.com/waxnfacts). great place for awesome vinyl finds.

i've seen one gig at the venue and the floor was open, no seats. the seats wrap around in a semi-circle. at that show, the whole venue was GA, seats and floor. i would imagine it is the same for u/w. we sat/stood about 3rd row up dead center and the sound was fantastic. i think the acoustics are pretty good anywhere in the venue, as the circular shape would help distribute the sound better than some other smaller atl venues where i've seen shows - roxy, variety, masquerade (horrid sound in there), etc, but i am no expert in sound. it is an intimate little venue and i'm extremely excited to be able to see u/w in a place this small. should be nothing short of amazing.

Anyone else surprised/disturbed/worried that this isn't sold out yet? I figured with the venue being so small (1,034 capacity) it would sell out in minutes. Now almost 2 weeks later you can still buy 50 tickets. I hope the sales are not so weak that they end up cancelling. Maybe they will sell out as it gets closer to the date.

I'm not ashamed to be a part of the American underground electronic scene! Electronic music fans are few and far between here, and I think that makes it all the better. Seeing a band this big in a venue this small... it's something special.

But, is it bad for the band financially? Absolutely. They should charge 65 for tickets like Prodigy did here. We're a smaller fanbase, but we're more dedicated!

the college stations will start promoing this on their entertainment calendars in march, and then you'll see the regular fans (as opposed to superfans who already have tickets) buy in. and you'll get the armchair fans who really liked trainspotting and/or sunshine and just like going to any and all shows.

Liquified is probably one of the best EDM promoters left in the U.S. Glad they are throwing the event. They do alot of eflier promotion. My wife got one w/ pic of R & K posing with giant sunflowers. I believe they said that there were only 250 tix left the week after they went on sale. Even though this is during peak WMC period, I'm pretty sure it will sell out by the day of the show. I've got half a dozen friends driving up from FL.

The venue looks great. Never been in the main room of the old Earthlink Live, but have heard djs upstairs in The Loft.

We have a large gang of 20+ going that I haven't seen in one place since my wedding. Like Denver, we're gonna need limo. Woot!

i dreamed about this show last night.

it was in a little tiny venue and the only people there were people from this board, my husband and i, and a few of my coworkers. rick and karl came in, and karl was carrying a little 2 year old girl in his arms. because there were so few people there he let her wander around the small crowd as they set up. the dirties took good care of her. they played peachtree while a big screen showed the cowgirl video. then i was thinking i should stop in the restroom before the show really got underway, but i was afraid i'd miss something good. just then they started playing something like a mama, which i don't like, so i figured that was a good sign that it was save to leave the room for a moment. then i woke up.

quite possibly the nerdiest dream i've ever had. :o

Started a new job and I was sweating that they wouldn't give me the time off.....but luckily they made the exception and gave me a half day off. I once had a dream that Underworld was guest-teaching a music theory class at my college. Although, there wasn't much "teaching" involved. They basically just played a live show and the class danced, haha.

None of my classmates knew who Underworld was, so I was mad at them.

The inside word I've heard from a friend has told me the band will take the stage around 10PM. The opening dj, Ian James, is very good. Liquified's website says 8PM-3AM, but my printed tickets say 9PM. I would guess the opening dj will play from when doors open til the guys take the stage. Still not sure if doors are at 8PM or 9PM. I'd say Ian plays 1-2 hours tops. I went to both Denver & Central Park and both openers played for about an hour.

For those looking to dance some more after the show, my friend Kazell (opener for Sasha & Digweed on upcoming North American tour) is playing not very far away in Midtown at WetBAR. Excellent dj! Liquified is also throwing this event. Club has excellent sound system and layout. I think he goes on around midnight.

My guess is that UW will play 2 maybe 2 1/2 hours & either the opener will return to play tunes til the club closes or the event will be over after UW finishes. The event is 18+ so they may keep the party going after the guys finish. Pretty sure we'll get a 2 hour set like all the recent shows, but I'll keep my fingers crossed for a longer show. :]

No chance. They don't have the time. I wouldn't want a 5-hour show anyway. That'd be like a 5-hour album. Some things are better in smaller, neater packages.

However, no CD recording means that UW can play as long as they want! I'd say a 2+ hour show is definitely possible.

I know it's general admission, but I wonder if I was the 137th person to buy a ticket. Or if it just randomly assigns one of ~1,100 seats that the venue is rated for. I know they use this so they can keep track of how many are left, but the thought of 150 people would be cool because it would almost be like a private performance.

Wishful thinking, but anyone have any insight?

how did you purchase your ticket? it's possible that they were sold to vendors in blocks so the number might have more to do with the fact that the vendor who sold to you was responsible for selling seats 100-150 or whatever. just speculation but i sincerely doubt only 137 people have bought tickets.

i bought our tix the morning they went on sale and we have G5 55 and 56 on our tix.

i, too, would have a hard time believing only a little over a hundred have been sold. i would imagine the place will be pretty full, but if not that is ok. when we saw mike patton there with his peeping tom project, it was maybe 1/2-3/4 full and the venue's upper-most and side-most seats were blocked off so it seemed more full than it was. not crowded feeling, though....

if you're coming south on 75 the interchange with 285 can be a little confusing. because if you're like me, you drive with a little compass in your head. you're driving south so you know 285 heading east is to your left, and heading west is to your right. but watch those signs because the exit for both directions splits off at the same time and the one for EAST is to the RIGHT. for some reason they had them split opposite directions and then cross over/under each other.

when i first moved here i got mixed up more than once and ended up heading the wrong way around the perimeter.

also, if your mapquest directions tell you to take georgia 400, make sure you've got a handful of quarters or single dollar bills in your car. it's a 50 cent toll.

rick looked so happy that i wished i could shrink him down and take him home in my breast pocket. :D

i can by no means provide a setlist, but i can list what i can recall (not necessarily in order):
juanita/kiteless/to dream of love (the whole thing, and my god i had goosebumps!), born slippy/nuxx, jumbo, crocodile, dirty epic (so. freaking. awesome.), 2 months off, a bit of pearls girl transitioning into beautiful burnout, cowgirl/rez, and then they did king of snake for an encore.

i'm sure i missed stuff and i think i might have mixed up the order a bit. someone else can fill in the gaps.

If ANYONE has pics of this show I would really love to have them -
what a great night.

Look in the threads with ATL or Atlanta in the title. People have posted pictures. Here are mine, I have videos coming too.

Great Pics, lectoid - can't wait for your video.
Thanks for posting a pic of the setlist too.
I noticed they didn't play everything on it :(
Was it me, or did there seem to be a lot of conferencing / discussion on stage between Karl and their equipment guy? And between Karl and Rick?

lectoid, your pics are fantastic. I was having trouble with lighting and I was using my old crappy camera because I didn't know if security might want to take them at the door. Yours fill the void...

Yes something was definitely wrong for part or all of the show that Karl was clearly not happy about. It was probably double-pissing him off because not only was something wrong, but it kept distracting him while he and the equipment guy had to keep messing around with stuff when I'm sure all he wants to do is throw himself completely into the show. It looked like Rick had to wave Karl over once or twice and tell him something like "don't worry about it man look at these people they love it anyway" heh. I don't think it was anything totally major, my guess is it was either his vocoder or mic setup, and/or his earpieces weren't picking up the full feed, something like that. It's rare to think of or see Karl miffed since he has a rep of being such a carefree guy but I suppose it happens, especially when it comes to putting on the best show he can.

From up front, I could see that there were NUMEROUS technical problems. I mean, at least a dozen things went wrong. If I hadn't seen them react to all of them, I wouldn't have noticed anything was wrong, though. If I was jet-lagged and had to deal with non-working mics and effects... I'd be pretty mad, too.

My god that show was incredible. I was afraid I might never get to see Underworld, so I was floored to hear they were playing in ATL. The show exceeded all expectations. I was front and center on the floor with one person between me and the stage, rockin the whole time. Darc, Juanita, that jam after Two Months Off - all just mind blowing. BTW - what was that jam? Are there any recordings of it?

Also, thanks for posting those pictures Lec. I'd love to see more, or hear a recording or something. I just couldn't be happier with the way that show turned out.

yeah i have to say, for the number of times the roadie had to come out and fix things, you'd never know by listening. everything sounded like it was going off as planned. i've never seen a group roll with the punches like that. they took every issue in stride and never let it impact the show itself.

wow, that is truly shocking to hear but now that I think of it, the tech guy was out there quite a bit.

well, if it helps any, the show was simply amazing with any technical problems that may have arose. I don't think I've ever witnessed them more 'on' than this nite in Atlanta. Every single jam was truly built into something more spectacular than when it started. As a collector of ~100 live shows this one ranks right up there with the best of them easily. About 2 minutes into Darc, I turned to one of my friends and said, "get ready for a special night." - thats what good sound and fan energy can do for ya. The crowd too, simply amazing. The best crowd, venue, set I've ever seen at an Underworld show.

Looking back on it, that short Pearl's Girl transition was pretty weird, but during the concert, it seemed to work perfectly. Go figure!

My favorite part of the show was DEFINITELY Rick's reaction to the giant inflatables. He looked to see if they were going to fit on stage and when they did, he busted up laughing. When the stage manager was trying to position them so they wouldn't touch the audience (no easy feat). Rick walked over to look, laughed and said "We're going to get in so much f*cking trouble." I'm not quite sure why he said that, but they do seem to be pretty protective of their giant glowsticks :)

Weird. I had no idea that was Born Slippy. I've never heard it like that. But yeah, that's the one. Freakin' awesome.

It's amazing how Born Slippy and Born Slippy .NUXX don't sound ANYTHING alike. Makes it hard to talk to people about since the B-side was actually the most popular one..

i had the EXACT same conversation with a good friend of mine who loves Underworld. He totally forgot about BS Original and was struggling to remember the song name. I kept saying it was BS and he kept saying no. I got a kick out of it.

maybe not,
but they did sing .nuxx live over an improvised version of one of the instrumental..
Underworld - Born Slippy (Original + NUXX lyrics) (Live).mp3
(can post, if interested)..

i've also made several fan mixes that combine both,
so the bpms do match up..

that and pearls girl have some interesting synergy in them,
though you wouldn't probably notice it offhand..

also, i realized something today. this is probably going to be no new news to anyone here, but let me have my moment of simpleton discovery. i made a quick playlist for my ipod based on the setlist from the atlanta show. they started with darc and moved into mowed path, which transitioned into juanita. i noticed for the first time today that the same vocal sample is used in darc and mowed path. "i've seen the animal."

i was walking through the art museum courtyard when i caught the clip in mowed path and stopped dead in my tracks. and i had this OF COURSE! moment, like suddenly it seemed like pure genius to follow one with the other. i mean, aside from the similar BPM. it's such a lovely little subtle connection between the two tracks.

okay you uberfans stop mocking my ignorance now. i realize you all identified this back in like 1973 before you were born.

although, i haven't kept up in the last couple of years,
all of their previous tracks/mixes have had
some links to their past work, if you play around
with the tracks..

they stopped doing this around the time of
beaucoup fish, and since then, NONE of their
albums, tracks , b-sides, except for riverrun
had the kind of depth, and continuity of
their earlier ones, ....ie: ADHO, OWB...

Yes, during some of the 1995 shows, before Trainspotting and NUXX broke, they used to play Born Slippy more than NUXX (since Born Slippy was the single), and Karl would sometimes (often?) sing the NUXX lyrics over it.

It's OK, cacophony. I never really heard the sample before. Thanks for pointing it out! :)

Brilliant! I was thinking this was going to be NUXX lyrics over original Slippy, but what a nice groove of the NUXX istru outtro. Seems weird to not hear Those Chords creep in at all.

Here's to Karl singing the words over Telematic! Maybe he has in the old days, ~95-96?

That's from the Tramway gig in 1994, if I'm not mistaken? The whole set is a treat (at least the part of it I have: Dark and Long / Dark Train, Cowgirl / Rez, this, Dogman Go Woof (w/ Spoonman lyrics) / Mmm... Skyscraper I love You)
