From the dieing world of Myspace:

UNDERWORLD - live jam - "Underworld vs The Misterons"
Wednesday 12th December
6pm (UK) - 1pm (ET) - 10am (PT) - 3am+1 (Japan)
Only at www.underworldlive.com

Following on from their live broadcast from The Oblivion Ball in Japan (24th November 2007) , Underworld have announced Christmas Special for fans which will see them broadcasting a live jam from their studio in the UK on 12th December. Featuring live performances by the band and also DJ Darren Price, the show is set to include some old and new favorites, live jammed versions and maybe even some surprises from the vaults.

The live broadcast will be available exclusively at www.underworldlive.com.

The 20,000 capacity sold-out Oblivion Ball included live performances by 120 Days, Simian Mobile Disco, The Orb, Andrew Weatherall and Underworld as well as a live installation "Wall of Art" (ArtJam: Underworld, Tomato and Friends) and a cinema showing films Underworld have made or contributed to. Underworlds' performance at the event was broadcast free to the world, again exclusively from their website. Over the coming weeks, underworldlive.com offers the chance to view the show again as it is serialised in 4 parts to members of the site. Membership to underworldlive.com is free and only requires a valid email address. The benefits of signing-up include free audio and video downloads, priority/enhanced access to live broadcasts and radio shows, hi-resolution artwork and photographs and free bonus material to accompany items purchased from the site.

The latest addition to the members area on underwordllive.com is the free monthly publication titled "The Book of Jam" - a collaboration between Underworld and Tomatos' John Warwicker.

Says Rick Smith of Underworld "The Book of Jam is a monthly publication; full of words, photographs, drawings and paintings by ourselves and our friends. The aim of it is to show our process, not just recording sounds and music but to put it into the context of our everyday making which includes all manner of things. This issue features a collection of our images taken during the recording of 'Oblivion with Bells' at Abbey Road Studios as well as other 'stuff'. The next issue, released at the start of January 2008 will be themed on our performances at the Makuhari, Tokyo."

Underworld "Oblivion with Bells" is out now.

So looking forward to another Christmastime live broadcast from the boys.

That was excellent, and almost certainly a response from the band to this board's criticisms of their live setlists. I for one am very satisfied with their solution. I just hope the band enjoyed playing those songs as much as we loved hearing them -- maybe that'll get the band thinking about integrating some of that stuff into their live shows!

Now that it's over I want to hear it all over again. I hope someone got a good recording, or that Underworld archive it. Possibly the tightest webcast yet, sonically speaking.

thanks to everyone who recorded!

And big BIG thanks to underworld and friends for putting up this show. It was amazing hearing all those more obscure tunes live and I'm sure this was some kind of reaction to the ongoing thread about the liveshows being a bit samey ...

It would be great if some of the vibe of last night's show could filter over into the actual live gigs. Even though I understand that you gus can't play a set like this every time, maybe you can consider dropping in Born Slipp, Air Towel or Oich Oich. :)

dubman
12-13-2007, 01:26 AM
yeah sorry i got caught up in trying to manage this recording that i totally forgot to mention how this is redeeming in every way. the flow, the jam, the unpredictability, the old tunes given cracking new sound. this is exactly what i was missing/talking about, and it was... so special, so incredibly exciting for everyone. involuntary smiles and lols and dancing with a 14-minute best-spoonman-ever, air towel, born slippy original... even non-remarkable and non-epic underworld tracks like peach tree and billy goat were worked really wonderfully here.
i dont want to be presumptuous and say it's a response to the osaka thread from before, but they must have had the idea that there's been a lack that this webcast was going to fill, and holy shit, it's been filled. we were looking through our discography to see what the hell else they could have dug up in the irc chat.

you're going to want to download that link i posted. it was recorded lossless and converted to high quality mp3, and i daresay it's better than most soundboard recordings.

Well... just in a few words... Brilliant... Moving... Inspiring... UW

I really enjoyed this broadcast and think it moves me even more than some live shows i've been to... strange but thru.
In the trend of Blue Mountain and in a (bit) lesser way the Peel session, UW really showed the world (me for starters) that they are truly still revolutionairs.
When I look at the River Run Project, recent broadcasts, Cocoon gig and OWB, I must admid that we are very lucky to have suchs fine artists among us.

And honestly, I must admid i'm a bit jealous :D

Karl, Rick and Darren...(and the rest of the team of course).....Respect

am i listening to the same broadcast
as the rest of you????

overall,
it wasn't a bad,

but i don't rank it up there with the peel sessions,
or the cocoon ones..dont'get me wrong, i'm all for
the broadcasts, i just they should retain the
quality that they've shown in the past....

i don't think it's really that great that we should
praise them to bring back the older songs, which they should have
been playing all along (but don't anymore), and have
done so many many times and better in the past...since
they're just a natural part of their song collection,
and history..

also, some of the interludes, and instrumental
breaks don't mesh that well, especially all

am i listening to the same broadcast
as the rest of you????

overall,
it wasn't a bad,

but i don't rank it up there with the peel sessions,
or the cocoon ones..dont'get me wrong, i'm all for
the broadcasts, i just they should retain the
quality that they've shown in the past....

i don't think it's really that great that we should
praise them to bring back the older songs, which they should have
been playing all along (but don't anymore), and have
done so many many times and better in the past...since
they're just a natural part of their song collection,
and history..

also, some of the interludes, and instrumental
breaks don't mesh that well, especially all
those ambient tracks, and random samples
snaps (i've got the power??)...

thanks for that other link...
I've tried downloading f/ dubman's link three or four times now so far, and it always cancels out at like ~300 mb

so - I couldn't listen to the file at all...

doesn't your computer save a partial file?
i find that surprising..

there are other links up, (maybe not that quality),
but at least you can hear it..

negative1, i'd like to address your criticism and say some stuff you pointed out were from regular techno tracks being played by Price. it's clear that this was Darren Price playing tracks with Abelton between Underworlds live jams. separating all the UW bits on their own leaves you with a great little bit of new Live UW jams. i was bored to tears with the inbetween shit Price played but the UW moments were awesome.

the versions of Peach Tree, Little Speaker, Oich Oich, Spoonman, BS.Original and Billy Goat are all great.

you can blame darren price all you want, but since it's now
an integral part of underworld, and underworld playing live,

they all get the blame / credits for the whole piece,
just excusing the darren price bits (which actually have
some decent parts to them), does not excuse underworld
from rehashing old songs, with a few samples thrown in,
and updating some synth parts.. yes, its harsh..

but like i said, if underworld wants to maintain their
quality and standards, everybody needs to step up..
not just just underworld, and let darren ride on their
works... a more cohesive integration would be good..

yes, its going to take some time, but how long has
darren price been with them? yes, improvising live
is tricky, yes its complicated, yes it can fail,
and they are trying....i'm just saying they can
do better, because they've done so in the past,
under harder circumstances (when it was just
two of them)...

Should they have been playing these songs all along? As their exposure, singles, and audiences increased, i think you have to placate the casual fan who wants to hear the hits and attract them to buy the record. Not sure they need to apologise for not playing Oic Oic more often, for example. I consider the live broadcasts, be they DJ sets, sharing new original material, or in this case, bringing back some classics, as being gifts to us, the hardcore fans.

Interesting to hear tracks like "Peach Tree" and "Little Speaker", which afaik have never been played live. And some of the older track were updated and jammed very nicely. Mixing quality a bit suspect, but hey, if it's live, it's live and it was a great 2 and a half hours for the fans.

I'd say some kind of balance between placating casual fans and more hardcore would be preferable. I kind of get where Negative1 is coming from in that you could ask the question why they never ever played these songs in all those gigs but instead endless variations on Nuxx, KOS, Moaner, TMO, Jumbo. Would all the casual fans suddenly stop going to concerts or buying the album if from time to time Underworld dug a little deeper into their discography for the liveshow?

Anyway I really enjoyed this set simply because of all the old and more obscure stuff thrown in, even if it didn't always gel too well with whatever Price was doing in between.

lol now we're just asking them to put on another ECG (which isn't really to my taste anyway) inside of a studio webcast. that version of spoonman was the best i've ever heard, and it's also the best recording of BS original that we're going to get. it was loud, heavy, and about as good as i could hope for. the samples isnt the point, it's what they do with them, and they worked some magic in there.

I think it's just called "breakbeat version" because after a couple of minutes the original version on the single switched to a 4/4 beat and the breakbeat faded to the background.

So, the new downtempo jazzy version of Jumbo, as heard on the 12/05 broadcast and up for a while on myspace, turns out to be Darren Price's "Nicodemus". It's lovely, but i'm again surprised to find that music i thought was new UW improvs actually being by Pricey (as with "5 ft 5", and "Shake that Higher").

p.s.: for anyone who has interest in burning the show to disc (i am still an album man in the mp3 age), here is some simple cover art using the posted tracklist and images that were posted on uwlive prior to the event. i split the show at ~77 minutes in (just before the UW vocal interlude).

If you had just said that, I don't think I would have been quite so angry in my post. But you didn't limit it to that. You were well on the way to tearing them another asshole each in both your posts. That is up to you - if that is what you want to do each time they play something special for us, then fine. I just get so bored with it now though.

Every time they give us a "present", there is always someone to say how it could have been better/tighter/better mixed/better content/less of this/more of that/not long enough/too long/not enough of the older content/too much of the older content/blahblahbloodyblah. And 9 times out of 10 it is American fans that do this, so I wonder if it is a cultural thing to be constantly critical and never accept the beauty of something in the spirit in which it was given. I am glad I am not buying xmas presents for you guys!

You - and that is a collective you for all the armchair music producers, btw - don't only seem to be looking a gift horse in the mouth every damn time; you bring along the vetinary dentist and the drilling equipment with you too. I guess I should just keep my blood-pressure down by not reading these threads post facto. :)

which one of those shows was designed to only be an internet performance?

i think we have an answer.

this was the best underworldlive internet performacne. i'm pretty sure that's what people are saying here. cocoon was epic but it was a diff. cup of tea alltogether. there was an audience there.

your argument is built on a false notion. nobody said this was the best underworld show ever.

why can't people have their own opinions? why can't people express their opinions with out being flamed here? yes, it is a fan-board, but we don't want to turn into underworld apologists where nothing bad can be said about them. don't worry, i'm sure that -1 is not hurting r&k's feelings so why get so defensive?

i am not taking a stance either way, as I don't have enough experience to make a claim like it's the best/worst/etc but I do believe that -1 should be able to say whatever he f-ing wants to without being directly flamed

-1's critique isn't valid because he's comparing a free internet only show to wildly different types of performance.

no harm meant from me. i just see this as a particular type of show. saying this wasn't as good as the Peel Session or Blue Mountain gig is just ridiculous because they're not meant to be the same type of performance.

i'm not sure about the last track, as i didn't
have that in the recording i had..

later
-1

the last track is wrong. it was a track by Prince Far I about Virgin/Front Lines, could have been called Virgin but the artist was def. Prince Far I.

i think it's just a matter of being courteous. someone gives you a gift, you dont shit on them if you deem their gift to not be up to par. "they shouldn't be thanked" may have rubbed people the wrong way.

Very succinctly put. And spot on.

this take on spoonman is just...... well let's just say i was listening to it on headphones on the evening train last night and it made me want to get up and hug all of the other commuters.
i'm still guessing on a few of these,
but this is more accurate than what i had
before..

Thanks for the pointers, BLD. I think this track would properly be called:

Prince Far I / Singers & Players - "Virgin"

Brilliant set all around - even the Price selections. I agree they didn't really fit Underworld's style, but that's kind of the nature of the project that they're aiming for in my mind. :p Anyway, I stick to my comments in the chatroom during the broadcast that this deserves it's own release similar to the Tokyo 3cd set or all the recent live recordings. Cater to the fans! We worship the internets you broadcast on!

Anyway, while blasted...I like the set even more, so it's got that going for it...

btw : the last track is indeed prince far i / singers & players - "virgin" - the very 1st so-called "disco plate" ( dp ) on 10" vinyl by on-u.sound records ! :)

Here's my attempt at a cue sheet.

Note that I left out the Linkwood Family track that's listed on the UW site because no matter how hard I tried I couldn't hear any other track happening between Sweedish Silver and Billy Goat.

Edited with TheBang's info from the next post down. Thanks! I didn't put the Linkwood Family track in since Billy Goat comes in underneath it and, as TheBang notes, it's barely worth tracking. I'm not sure what happened with Track 13. I was sure I had already fixed that, but it's fixed for real now.

The Linkwood Family "track" is the spoken word thing that precedes the beginning of Billy Goat. Go to http://www.myspace.com/firecrackerrecordings and click on "Word to the Wise skit". Almost not worth tracking, IMO.

Track 10 on your CUE sheet is called "All the Stars." It was released as a download track on underworldlive.com in 2001. See my post above yours for Track 13. Thanks for your work on the cue sheet.

Thanks for the hard work on the cue sheets and recording, guys and girls.

Really, really enjoying this... a fantastic early Christmas present. Would love to see this available as an UWLive CD but I expect that might be difficult due to licensing issues regarding the tracks by artists other than Underworld. For shame :(

This is exactly why I just read through 18 pages of posts on this topic. Anyone have an answer for this? Also, does anyone still have the 320kbps file? I would gladly seed this out. I have the version rtsr, but it's 128kbps and the thought of a 320kbps version out there still is intriguing.

From reading the posts, one was clearly made. Not sure how it didn't make it to the tracker... Anybody?

TheBang

The 128 Kbps AAC is a rip of the original broadcast quality. A 320 Kbps one would have been a recording, and, thus, a re-encode/transcode (read: lesser quality).

Yeah, I was thinking about this after I posted, but too tired to edit... I was going to ask if anyone knew what the original stream quality was. Obviously it was 128kbps.

TheBang
02-13-2017, 03:04 AM
Oh, and to clarify, the actual bitrate of the stream was 96 Kbps, as indicated in the info file. If you're looking at your media player (like iTunes), it probably says 128 Kbps, but that's only because it's reporting the "bit rate atom" that was set incorrectly by the software (Fission) I used to split the stream file. If you calculate out the actual bits and duration, it'll come up as 96 Kbps for everything.
