I'll be up at 6AM doing, you know, what you usually do. That's assuming I'm able to make it to sleep in time. Usually I'm off work at 11PM and crawling into bed at 4AM. Hopefully my body doesn't reject the sudden change.

There were quite a few dropouts on my end, so I stopped recording before Bamboo. :(

It was very nice to hear Rick and Karl again, and they should definately continue to do this kind of thing, but Quicktime just doesn't seem very reliable.

I had the same problems with the Birmingham broadcast and the London webcasts. They were a great experience, but the skips spoiled the fun. I've almost cried when the climax of Kittens was destroyed by this stuttering.

And now, I didn't get half of the stuff that was announced. Great.

I thought the switch to Apple stuff was made to enhance the experience for everybody. Now the opposite has happened. If I'm not alone with this problem there must be something wrong.

Of course a skipping webcast is better than no webcast at all, and everyone involved deserves great respect! :)

Lets hope there is an explanation/solution for this.

joethelion
11-13-2007, 01:32 PM
weird how so many of you have had problems with Quicktime...

I actually had very few (if any) dropouts during the Roundhouse Broadcasts (or the last radio show where we heard the most recent version of Auto Trader / Phonestrap)
but I couldn't record today, as I was in class / meetings

and yea - whatever happened to the Archives

I'd wager that a good portion of people here don't have... say the "Burger Van Man Gig" (or even know what that is...) For some reason it never was put up on the archive website (and maybe not even its former incarnation 'dogboyheadset')

come to think of it... I'll just post that show up later tonight (if I can find it)
[edit] and if I can't ... I'll at least put up Bungalow with Stairs

BTW, as a QuickTime troubleshooting tip, if you're having skipping/dropping/connecting problems with QuickTime streams, try this:

1. Open QuickTime in your Control Panel (System Preferences for Macs)
2. Click the Advanced tab
3. Change the Transport Setup to "Custom"
4. Choose "HTTP" and leave it on Port 80. Click OK.
5. Click OK again (on Windows).
6. Close QuickTime Player or your web browser, and relaunch it, and try the stream again.

Holy crap, I just heard Rick + Karl answer my question on the webcast re: Steve Reich's influence! Best way to end the day ever.

("Music for 18 Musicians" is a fantastic album, by the way. The shifting, gradually developing patterns of Born Slippy and .Telematic that got me into Underworld so many years ago are there in Reich and Glass' work, too.)

Just played this, good to hear more rambling nonsense and a couple of tunes thrown in.

Thanks to rtsr, and the recorder.

My only comment is we don't always want everything for free.
Happy enough to pay for the downloads, like the cracking RiverRun stuff.
I'd fork out for a 25 minute Bamboo plus pictures of a dalmation.

King of Snake

According to Karl in a recent interview, they could follow up OWB immediately with a much more up-tempo techno release with the tracks they had lying on the shelves that didn't make the album. I'm guessing that includes Bamboo and possibly tracks like Always Loved a Film.
So yeah I'd definitely pay for that. No need to give everything away for free. While I'm not complaining (too much) about the ambient-ness of OWB it would be a shame if the beatless experimental stuff would be the only style left that actually get's released. (between all the riverrun releases, including the 2 soundtracks and OWB, there's only a handful of tracks you can actually dance to).
I don't know how much truth is in Karl's words though, since if they do have these kind of tracks, they sure haven't been playing any of them out live except for Bamboo, even though they've been playing loads of new Darren Price tunes.

So would I! An internet release of some slamming hard tracks would be awesome to my ears, and it might also satisfy some critics who think UW has mellowed since born slippy.

yes karl and rick,

there are people that will pay for music, what a concept..
(this coming from someone that ordered all the live discs)..not cheap..

yeah, sure we may want some lo-res versions of live broadcasts,
or the occasional studio outtake and such..

but c'mon, we're not asking for every live track,
studio version and such for free..

i think commenting on that, makes all the fans
look like cheapskates that are always looking for
handouts........hardly what i envision underworld fans to be..

Well, those tracks you list have already been released as downloads. They were in the archives on UWLive for at least 5 years. We've got them. And if folks didn't, they're easily obtained from others around here.

Not sure i understand your comment about these tracks not existing as "studio" versions. They might be jams or works in progress, but they're surely up to UW sonic snuff. i think the point was, hearing a version that's in better sonic quality than the rips from the various radio broadcasts.

I agree that "Always Loved a Film" as played on dirtyradio in 5/06 and several live versions of YDS sound decent, and yes, they are certainly enjoyable. But i'd pay to hear them in CD audio quality or close to it, higher than the bitrates they now exist in (i.e. captured from internet streams, or UWLive downloads of the live tracks, which i believe was at 128-160)

i think we both have similiar points...

those early downloads weren't exactly the best quality (trust
me, i've listened to them many, many times)..and weren't encoded
that well.....i'm sure there was some other higher quality source
for those tracks..[besides, what about all the newcomers that
haven't even heard of them]...

so, if you're asking for better quality versions of those, i agree..

i thought that people were requesting 'studio' versions of songs
that underworld had been improvising with or/playing live, etc..

Ah, i see. Yeah, i remember lots of skips and blips in "Second Hand", among others. Technology jumps in leaps and bounds!

But yes, if UW are playing the songs live, the material must exist as "studio" versions. To hear "You Do Scribble" or "Darc" as it originally existed, unmixed, unimprovised, without crowd noise, is where it's at!

My guess is that it's Bamboo that borrowed Lenny Penne (and Play Pig) lyrics, and not the other way around. Here's why.

We know Lenny Penne was in finished form with lyrics and everything no later than summer 2005 (it was performed on the tour), and most likely it was finished sometime in 2004.

Play Pig was also in finished form with lyrics by early 2005 at the latest, because they gave the tracks to the remixers (Pig & Dan, Buick Project, etc.) sometime around then.

However, as of late 2004, Bamboo had no lyrics (and no synth beat and synth strings), as heard on the Music Bank Jam. So, I think as Bamboo evolved, that's when the lyrics were borrowed from Lenny Penne and Play Pig.
