hm...

it's funny - I LOVED the music to the original version, the vocals seemed a bit too high in the mix, like it was just sitting on top of the guitar

this second version, however - the vocals definitely fit the music

yet

I like the first version more... it's almost like there was more 'emotional investment' (or whatever you want to call it) in the first version. It had this sort of sweet-yet-melancholic vibe - while this new version, just... well - it just seems like a track. Like, it's just a song no more, no less

I wonder if we're seeing their song writing process in action here? As we know from the Warner-chappell site, they can often go through 30-40 or more revisions of songs.

Interesting thought! Could be, could be.

What stark differences between the three versions, even though it's a pretty simple track, basically guitar and voice. #1 seemed like a close miked solo, #2 as a minimal electro track, now #3 has haunting echo, and could have fit in easily on any of the RiverRuns.

Thanks so much for sharing with us, boys!

I think this is a fascinating way to show us some insight to their writing process. Months ago there was a thread asking which songs fans wanted on an official release most, and my first thought was "all of the unreleased versions of our favorite songs." I just quoted myself. Anyway, I love this idea and hope to see more of it in the future. This is really great stuff.

fantastic idea to show not just an 'evolution' of a piece, but what can be atchived from different view points.

as someone said, version 4 has lush pads, yet the vocals seems disconnected, distant. version 3 has more imediacy, like sitting infront of a campfire listening to a guy calmly pluck something away ona guitar.

which ones better? well i guess it depends on your mood.

I hope they'll keep all the different versions up over time so the progression and altering of a piece can be observed. Similar to how Biro the Leggy was something from the archives of the AHDO period, played on a radio show on dirty radio, and has now ended up an album track.

The difference being with fonestrap that we're allowed the access to the work in progress as it developes which was previously only privy to a select few, let alone put on display for the public.

Not to be too lauding of such a feat, but I can't help but admire Rick and Karl that much more for their willingness to share in this way.

wasn't really digging the phonestrap/autotrader thing. Sounded like the two crashed together in a big mess of undefined sounds. Was good hearing a bit more upbeat techno-ish peace from uw again, but there were too many sounds going on imo. It started getting good at the end though when only the bassline and beats where left.

i thought this latest version was pretty cool....the text spliced and used as another rhythm. At the very beginning, the colors being called out was a callback of To dream of love, imo. Agreed, it did get a bit messy in the middle, piles of speech. i can't make out the phonestrat lyrics anymore, either. But the beat and that rolly bass got me grooving!

i think it's just little documents of Rick and Karl's creative process shaping a track. From version to version, we hear the evolution, what sounds they liked, which fall by the wayside.
Autotrader started with just karl speaking the listing of cars for sale. In successive versions, the words have been spliced a bit, ambient background added, and "music of the streets" included.
Phonestrap has changed a lot from the initial guitar and voice song, to become more electronic.

Are you kidding me? I mean it wasn't exactly a fine tuned peice of work like Jumbo or Born Slippy, but the way the sampled vocal patterns evolved/changed was just mindblowing! With all the relaxed (and still beautiful) stuff Rick and Karl have been putting out lately, this was a very welcomed, almost old school, Underworld moment!

A pure wall of sound!!!

I was almost unimpressed with the individual tracks (the Phonestrap series and the Autotraders); I thought it was nice that we could hear something like that, but they were so raw that I never really considered them "tracks." With the introduction of Phonestrap 6 + Autotrader 4, I really felt a solidness behind the otherwise airy stuff we had received before. On subsequent listens, I have come to agree that there's a heap of sound that wears me down in the song, but it's certainly something "more than the sum of its parts" and it blew me away the first time I heard it. I can't wait for further versions.

oh I'm with you, phaseblue. this is good stuff. I've always loved when they use choppy vocal segments (especially in those live incarnations of the original Born Slippy in the 90s ... oh what I would give to see 'em play that again).

this whole phonestrap process is pretty cool. what more can fans ask for than a glimpse at how an Underworld track evolves? exciting.

how do you do that with streming audio / do i need software to change it from streaming to mp3 audio thanks don't know to much about steaming audio

geoff
10-22-2007, 02:10 PM
It's not streaming... 99% of the things you watch online are in fact just downloads that start playing before they are finished downloading completely.

If you ever see a progress bar that fills up to the end, you know it's a download, not a stream.

If you get the "Unplug" addon for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2254) you can scan any page for downloadable media. It works like a charm for the stuff you see on uwlive, except for the Croc videos, which may in fact be actual streams. (Not sure - i'm not 100% knowledgable about this stuff, but i can make my way around.....)

0to9:

The Phonestraps are not streams.

Use the Firefox addon I described above to save the .mov file to your hard drive. Or, just use the various download links that people have posted in this thread.

Example: http://www.underworldlive.com/home/Phonestrap6/mainColumnParagraphs/00/asset/Ph6At4.mov

From there, you can do what you like. According to industri_studios, you can use iTunes to perform a conversion from mov to mp3.

Hopefully this just rips the mp3 out of the mov file without decoding/encoding it again. (If not, you'd be adding another layer of lossyness to the file). But it will work regardless.

Good luck

TheBang
10-24-2007, 02:51 PM
The audio on the .mov files is not MP3, it's AAC, so transcoding to MP3 would indeed be lossy re-encoding. You can use QuickTime Pro to pass-through the AAC track to an MP4 container to get a straight .m4a file. I imagine you could use MPEG-4 editors to extract it also. I have used YAMB before on MPEG-4 files with great success.

industri_studios
10-24-2007, 06:01 PM
I thought AAC was compressed... is the loss coming from a switch between two compression formats?

cacophony
10-24-2007, 06:19 PM
aac is compressed, so you've already got less data than the original file. if you then convert to mp3 you lose a little bit more of the information. it's basically cascading lossy compression. the ideal situation is to do as described above, where you leave the compressed file unaltered and just essentially pass through to a different file extension.

of course not everyone is going to be able to figure the process out so just keep in mind that the cascading is worse if you compress twice with the same algorithm, and is more likely to be audible. if you absolutely must convert, choose a different algorithm to try to hide as much of the audible loss as possible.

TheBang
10-24-2007, 06:21 PM
AAC and MP3 are both lossy compressed formats.

1. lossy source -> lossy format = quality loss (ex. AAC -> MP3, 128 Kbps MP3 -> 192 Kbps MP3)
2. lossy source -> lossless format = same quality, huge file size increase (ex. MP3 -> FLAC)
3. lossless source -> lossy format = quality loss, huge file size decrease (ex. CD-DA -> MP3)
4. lossless source -> lossless format = same quality, up to 50% smaller or larger file (ex. WAV -> FLAC, FLAC -> AIFF)

I guess I'm confused then. If you knew everything from my last post, then the concern about a lossy re-encode in my original message would seem self-evident, would it not?

industri_studios

I think you misunderstood my question (giving me the overview answer).

I was asking about one particular format and was curious what the transition was for that format to MP3... cacophony answered that.

I made a CD comp of all the Phonestraps to date, and just used some crappy mp3 maker shareware to convert the mov to wav. Nice to hear these all back to back and sense the differences.

Phonestrap6 vs Autotrader is really my favorite thus far, with that slinky bassline and mechanical beat. Sounds like something from the AHDO era. And unlike the more chilled out new abum, it bangs!
