It'll be on Listen Again after the show, on the Radio 1 website as usual. I didn't get a rip of it cos I buffered out the first 30secs or so, but yeah. Massive.
Not entirely sure how I feel about the vocal effects at the moment. Very echoey, and not at all like the live performances. But having said that, I can remember feeling the same about JAL to Tokyo (or Bang the Pole, as we thought it was called) when I first heard that on Tongy, and it grew on me.
Anyway - good news. Nice to hear it out there, and in EYE-BEE-THA as well :D

Starts at 1.01, as stated it is on even though the track listing is wrong.
Im listening as i type this and in the first ten seconds it sounds fucking awesome. Nice bass line which sounds so different from what has been done live. There seems to be some cut up vocals before Karls slighly distorted main ones come in.
Only heard it once but it sounds pretty solid and i can see this doing quite well on the club and commercial circut.

i love this song, however, i've got to say.
What is the deal with all the reverb/delay on the vocals? it's a bit over done. the vocoder as done live is great, but the reverb/delay added to this version is really too much.
other than that, love it dearly already. one of my fav. lyrics of any UW song.
HOLY SHIT this is fucking beautiful! I'm so glad they put that part in where Karl sings those sweet words in that BEAUTIFUL melody. dunno how to explain. DAMN

it's a bit much yeah. They could have taken the whole vocal down a bit imo, although it's hard to judge from a hyper-compressed radio broadcast.
I kind of miss the melodic elements that the cocoon version started with (and that ran trough the track).

Firstly I shall add my thanks to TheBang - can you believe it but I had Tongey playing in the kitchen but was watching Dr Who, so mised it!!
I am asuming the slightly muffled/cotton wool audio is owing to the internet thingey of the file (Tongey sounds as if he has a cold) - otherwise methinks I shouldn't be too hastey to judge. If I am honest, the cocoon version is one of my fav u/w tracks - the bassey bassline, karl's deep voccoder-a-thon vocals, and the gentle snare/cymbal rythm in-fills ammount to a truly sublime track. This version, in comparison, seems a bit too busy. However, a) I will doubtless grow to love it on its own merits, and b) it maybe a single mix and therefore subtly different from the album version.
Ultimately, I trust karl, rick and darren to give us an utterly beautiful cd come October :)

well put crazysugarboy. i am not badmouthing it. just stating my initial opinion and thoughts. i've got it on repeat here and have pretty much gotten over my distaste for the extra vocal effects. that melody that comes in at 3:50 is incredible.

it's a wonderful groove and it makes me more excited for the new album than when i first heard two months off. the music is really impecable, like a mix between the push upstairs, dino adventure 3d, and skyscraper vibe...
but the vocals are really overtreated. i mean, it could be the bad quality, or that i should get used to it first like all new underworld songs, and that it's the right decision overall, but with AHDO, the recent riverruns, and now this, i just think it's a bad way overall and i want his voice to come out more.
then again i hated hated hated the JAL vocals and now i love them, so who knows, but i cant think of too many instances where that kind of magic can happen again and again.

I could swear I've heard Underworld play "Crocodile" live during one of their webcast-only video shows. Not the same as the album version, but close enough that I recognize the rhythm.
It's definitely living up to their reputation, however. Looking forward to the final album, which I'm buying unless I hear of terrible reviews.

why this is called 'Crocodile'
If you've ever heard a baby croc before, a similar sound starts to happen in the song around 46 seconds into it. *Chirp* *Chirp* (repeat)
maybe it is a baby croc.....probably it's just a sample of a guitar chord cut short.:)

It was a version of it featuring a slower beat, and a more "haunting" main synth part that, while cool, gave it an ackward vibe IMO. The vocals are only echoed/vocoded in the chorus, and the breakdown synth stuff is more in the background than on the studio version (and sounds a little different too).
It sounds a lot better now that it's faster, shorter, and has better effects and such. Still ain't diggin' the lyrics much however.

If Tong has it that could mean that others do too. It's only a question of time before a leak is sprung....I hope.
To base this on past events after the debut of the new track on Tong's show it took a matter of two weeks or so before AHDO appeared online.

cum between my lips
you had to gook
you're fingers pushed
and you scratch my back for real though
slow d00d, slow fast
ask for a knight to rap around us
I think the Wii will get some sweet stuff
Oh......Bee Stings, End Me! (kill me)
Oh.......Bee Stings, End Me! (kill me)
is that you
is that, is that really you
to 'ho' beneath my seat
two numb birds click
between worm touch
when you bum me down lets shoot em
rice isn't rising
remember the inside of every outside beating
ballin',
me in there
gettin' dat sweet stuff
Oh.......Bee Stings, End Me (kill me)
Oh.......Bee Stings, End Me (kill me)
*the vocoder part:
"you....don't....know....what....this....says"

After a day of reflection (or close to it) I have come to the conclusion that this is so heavily influenced by Talk Talk (spirit of eden/laughing stock era). I am mostly talking about stucture, though those who are really perceptive will see the sound influence.
I think I'd give large amounts ($,£) for UW to cover a Talk Talk track... though I know they have historically stayed away covers

This version is quite decent...it's a step above the Cocoon version, I think. The delay might be a tad over-done in the verses, but it makes Karl's "Allll theeesse thiiinnngsss" simply beautiful. Also, the synth solo after the first or second chorus is amazing! If Underworld follows the pattern of some of their previous singles, they might release an "ambient" version that is a bit more like the Cocoon version. Or, they might not.
I want this album.

Some minor complaints:
-It feels like a summer song and it's almost over....:p
-the lyrics are kinda blah
-Food A Ready and Back in the Fears whoops the shit out of this. If songs like those and Scribble are passed over for a album of stuff that sounds like this I'll be a little let down. But Cups doesn't sound like Moaner so I'm sure the first track is no indicator of how the rest of the album will flow. :)

i get the idea that this one is going to be more like their art-rock album more than their straightforward prog house they've been doing the last few years. what i mean is that i think this one is going to be more arty or proggy than dancey. which i think is a good thing. you can't dance to a lot of dubnobasswithmyheadman cos of the odd beats (wasn't dark & long in some weird thing like 15/8?) and ambient tracks like tongue (when i say ambient, i mean in the true sense of the word, not the garbage music, that it conveys nature or environment).

Sounds great even for terrible audio quality. Yeah, the vocals sound overtreated, but a better quality will probably yield better results with that. The lyrics almost sound fairly straightforward (if that's possible for Karl) in structure if not content, so I don't know what to make of that. I can't wait to hear the entire album though. It needs to be out sooner than October.
(So You Do Scribble isn't on the album either?)

Complex, rich, lots of texture, rolling groove, deep, beautiful layered vocals ... with a lingering aural taste on the sonic palette. To be enjoyed now, but will also age well

well, apart from Tongue and River of Bass, all of Dubno is pretty much straight 4/4 rhythms, nothing too complex there really. I don't really get the art-rock angle you're describing here. Underworld's output of the past few years has been mostly quite ambient or industrial even (Riverrun series, Breaking and Entering soundtrack), while Crocodile sounds decidedly more dancey than any of that stuff.
Food A Ready and Back in the Fears whoops the shit out of this. If songs like those and Scribble are passed over for a album of stuff that sounds like this I'll be a little let down. Food A Ready and Back in the Fears are part of the Riverrun series so I don't see how those tracks would ever have been contenders to be on the album.

i never understood the fuss about Scribble. it's like the most stressful live acrobatics that more than not falls on its face because it hiccups too much and never becomes coherent. when it works it's beautiful, but i've only heard that once or twice. i can't imagine a studio version being release-worthy at all.

I am absolutely in love with the way it sounded in Tokyo, but for some reason I can't imagine it ever working on a CD :(

I was already excited for Oblivion With Bells...now that the lead single is almost here, i'm getting jumpy!
The beginning percussion is very reminiscent of TMO and much of AHDO, the shaker sound...the compression kills the details, though, so i'm not worried...this will undoubtedly rock in the clubs!
Love the growly bassline...classic UW!
The reverb doesn't bother me...gives it a LOT of atmosphere, and Karl's singling is lovely! The vocoded bit ~4:30 is indecipherable, but what else is new? :p JAL to Tokyo was a lot more difficult to understand throughout.
Personally, i like this better on first blush than TMO...there's just a lot more going on in Crocodile. And, i like that it apparently mixes into Beautiful Burnout...maybe the album will feature more continuous mixes (think the first half of the Chems' "Dig Your Own Hole" or "Puppy" by Fluke).
i agree with what was written above: bring on those bells!

man, listening to this song reminds me so much of the fall when TMO came out - and that was just such a happy time for me. i think with this record this fall, it's gonna be a most excellent year. i can hear it in the wind.
also, i just wanted to let everyone know that i'm gonna listen to crocodile on infinite repeat all day at work today.
that is all.
the fall seems so far away...

there's a pretty good quality recording of Tong's show over here (http://www.newmixes.com/pete_tong-the_essential_selection_in_ibiza-sat-08-03-2007.html)
I extracted Crocodile using cue splitter. Download here (http://www.sputnikkproductions.com/Underworld-Crocodile.mp3)
This version is still pretty compressed, but better than the one posted before.

Many thanks also King of Snake:) And what a romantic tableux Flywaver has created - getting married the very same w/e that the utterly beautiful crocodile is premiered.
Notice how the tracklist shows the record label as JBO? I thought they were using their own label now??

Very Enoesque.
Some of the effects remind me of "Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)" from Remain in Light by The Talking Heads.

I have to give that a listen.
I still hear Eno by a long shot.
Oh, I get it, you are being manipulated and don't even know it. When the realization comes around, keep in mind you are not alone. ;)

Food A Ready and Back in the Fears are part of the Riverrun series so I don't see how those tracks would ever have been contenders to be on the album.
Biro the Leggy (B. Burnout) came before RiverRun as well but it's reworked to be on the album. Quality songs like 8 ball and Back in the Fears seem to usually get the backburner to the Ibiza "famous djs will play this!!!!" stuff (2 month off, crocodile) when it comes time to pick album tracks and most importantly singles.
Guess what I'm trying to say is, some of the better production work I've heard from these guys will only see the light of day as a crappy 192kbps mp3 and you can almost listen to those songs and tell they took longer to make than Crocodile would have. Why waste more energy on something that will be b-sided than the actual album tracks?
I think that the rest of the album will no doubt have songs that are in the same vein as the trippy RiverRun stuff and maybe after hearing those, I'll go, "now I see why these were picked over Fears, etc" but right now I'm thinking....
"why didn't they just rework Fears into an eight minute epic instead of making a direct to video sequel to Two Months Off's shaker drums.":p
btw....I hated all four albums when I first heard them. Ha.

Crocodile sounds decidedly more dancey than any of that stuff.

Biro was never released as such, unlike the Riverrun tracks which were proper releases (albeit in mp3 only)

Well, what's the point of releasing a single if not for DJ's to play it? It seems obvious that the most DJ-friendly tracks would be picked to be singles. Don't get me wrong though, I love 8-Ball and Back in the Fears is one of my favourite Riverrun tracks, and would definitely not have misstood on a proper Underworld album. It's just not single material.

well you're entitled to that opinion of course, but I respectfully disagree.
There's no way for you to tell how much time they spent on something, but obviously Crocodile has been worked on for a long time as well, since we heard it first in october last year.

Well, uw's albums have always been a mix between dancefloor singles and more ambient and experimental work so I'd say it's a very safe bet that it's gonna be like that again.
Still can't see why you would want another version of Back in the Fears on the album though...

Hello! Mrs Pedant here. We actually first heard this track as the opening to the Zurich gig in 2005.
So, yes, it has been in the works for a long time. :)

I wonder how long before the verison from the Zurich show will be added to the archive at underworldlive now that the song is somewhat official out there.
I hope soon, or at least with the next update. It will be nice to eventually replace that audience recording I have.

i think peter gabriel, when he was introducing 'sky blue' on his most recent concert DVD, he was talking about some songs just seem to fall into your lap and they seem like the best thing you've ever written, and then other songs, you'll get a whim one day and record a little bit, and you end up tweaking it for years, and then it's finally finished. i would guess that's the story behind 'crocodile' and 'beautiful burnout'. the first version i heard of biro the leggy was very rough, not even B side material, although i could hear the idea there.
this album version will probably be completely different from what we originally heard 5 years ago- and it will be loads better. i have confidence in what they've put on the album and what they've left off. i know this new album will be great and we'll all appreciate it more once it comes out.

I listened 3 times last night, took a nice (LONG) sleep, and listened again. I'm absolutely in love with the beat now -- the beginning is catchy, groovy.
I'm still getting used to the vocals, which will probably sound better uncompressed on a CD. Underworld is not meant to be heard at this quality! So much fine detail is completely inaudible in this low-bitrate version.
This sounds different from previous Underworld sounds, which is exciting. Their albums are all distinct and I'm confident Oblivion will be, too.
so excited :D

I think my liking of the zurich comes from a longer exposure time to the track in that form. After a couple months I'm sure this new version will begin to grow on me.

That is SOOO spooky flywaver. I will never forget 10 years ago when I asked out a random guy from my local waitrose. The same day, I bought a random cd by Bjork - on the initial listen, the track that really stood out was track 09 - gr8 rythm, bass, and melody. A few days later, the guy still hadn't got back to me and I was totally devasted. At this point, to cheer myself up, I read the lyrics of track 09 from the cd insert - "I miss you, but I haven't met you yet"
