It was a three hour set and they played the entire Oblivion With Bells album....and filmed it for an HD-DVD release on the same day as the album!!!

Or I could be lying.:)

give us a fucking chance you bastards...

set only finished at 3:15, its now 5:30 and i've only just got back... seeing as its a 1:45 mintue drive, i'm doing it right away...

what you want???

ok ok... well i'm a bit hazy on the order as i was taking 200 photos...but what i remember is this:

first track was

All These Things - or whatever its called these days...
Dark and Long

then they definitely played (in some order):

Beautiul Burnout
King of Snake
Kittens
Two Months Off

finished with:

Jumbo
Born Slippy

no encore, they just ended with BS...

a great banging set designed for the crowd really....especially after 4 hours of banging house and trance from Sasha & Digweed, of which Diggers was playing the better tracks

Geo, Janie or KOS might be better at remembering order and if i missed anything...

only the two new tracks though - of which we've heard both before....

a good set well performed and KH was absolutely loving it, "good to be home" he said.

(photo's to follow shortly)

Morning!

They ended with JUMBO, Matteus!
But props for posting as soon as you got in - I just crashed out completely, and you were the one driving. What a star! Still Number One fo' sho' :)

As far as I can remember it went:

Unknown/Overture
All These Things
Dark and Long (with a bit of Dark Train in it - lovely surprise)
Rez/Cowgirl
Unknown/Improv
Beautiful Burnout/Biro
King of Snake
Kittens
TMO
BS Nuxx
Jumbo

Geo, in true efficient Belgian fashion, has made a set list on his mobile phone, but seeing as how he and KoS are still dead to the world, it would be mean to go and wake them, no matter how much you want me to, you impatient buggers!

The weather was abso-fucking-lutely appalling. Torrential downpours interspered with light drizzle. Crocs 4tw though - I love the feeling of cold mud between my toes, reminds me of being 4 again.

Luckily the site was set up with three big marquees, the main tent prolly holding upwards of 6,000 or 7,000.

The atmoshere was good - very club-party-ish, which I guess is to be expected from Renaissance. Jam-packed solid by the last hour of Sash and Digs' set, and your usual number of off-their-face-drunk idiots insisting they could squeeze into the three square inches in front of you, but at least I didn't suffer any whiplash injuries this time. (Old age is a terrible thing!)

Matt managed to get right to the front of the pit, but we ended up about 10 rows back I guess - still a good place to be for pics "etc." ;)

4 hours of Sasha and Digweed was a bit too much imo, though. Maybe cos I was predominantly there to see Underworld, but by the time it got to 12.30am or so with still another hour to go, much as I love Sash and Digs, I was thinking "Come on, you've had your go now, get off and let UW on!"

1 1/2 hours of UW was really not enough for me either - maybe I am spoilt by the 3 hours shows in 05 and Cocoon last year. Hope the own shows later this year will be a good bit longer.

Karl looked happier and more full of energy than I have seen him in a long time! He was really really enjoying it to the max, and I love the way he sometimes just looks into the crowd and, it appears, suddenly realises he has got thousands of people there wired up and riding high on the music, and just giggles like a little boy. Rick was fine too - at least I assume he was. No bandages or visible "Tom and Jerry" bumps sticking out of his head. Thank God. Darren was his usual self too - he smiles a lot more these days - doesn't look so worried ;)

The Dirty Banner was a bit of a nightmare, however. I decided to wait til KoS and Geo arrived yesterday afternoon to get their artistic input... and the bloody paint wouldn't dry! We even tried the hair-dryer on it for ages. Then my beloved husband chimed in:
"Ah.. that's the paint I used on the front door."
"Yep"
"Oh, I should have told you about that - when I painted the door it took about 3 days to dry"
"¬¬"

So plan B was a naff spray-painted instant drying thingy. Sorry if any Dirts that wanted to meet up missed it. Had it up three times, but not for long cos it pisses off the people behind you. Apart from Andy - who reads the forums but isn't member. Hi Andy 0/ - thanks for being nice about the banner and good to chat with you! Another one there just for UW too :)

We did finally manage to meet up with Crazysugarboy at the end of the gig too, after a flurry of sms's "Well, we're here"... "Well I'm over here". Great to meet you too. Will arrange a proper Dirty Meet in a pub prior to the Roundhouse in October.

Well... I am amazed my fingers have the energy to type this at all as I have had about 4 1/2 hours sleep. But it was a fab night.

YES!! Three of them, to the left of the stage, plus a little video bit of Karl, Rick and the Spotty Dog as they were inflating them in the field. That was fun.

Nice new visuals actually... had a standard "words" sequence, prolly the same as at Cocoon. Also had a visual sequence of a different women sticking their tongues out with words stuck to their tongues.

WOW:) What a night. My washing machine is currently whirring away and hopefully coping with the mud - however, I reckon my trainers have died an unpleasant death. The thing that struck me more than most was that Karl was jumping about more like the two 7 yr old kids who are currently playing footie in the communal gardens where I live than a guy who's recently turned 50. The energy and simple happiness that he was emanating was truly wondrous - and from Rick and Darren also, partic at the end "curtain call". And what an end! - the truly beautiful "Jumbo", which always has me nearly in tears.

It was great to meet up with you 4 - Beautiful Burnout, Geo, KoS, and Big Screen Sat, albeit briefly - see you in Oct at the Roundhouse - a pre-gig pub thingey sounds gr8:)

Btw, excellent pics big screen:)

I got some cool laser photos during sasha and digweeds set

Finally, thank you Underworld for everything underworld

warning: crappy soundquality ahead!

These Things:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8tAuhj5Q5E

this sounded quite a bit different from the version we heard at Cocoon. It now seems to be a bit more stripped down but also has a more solid chugging techno beat.

Dark & Long/Shake That Higher:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a9BHHcwnUU

Beautiful Burnout:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSVhLe4K_rM

this is the intro to BB. This also sounded very different from earlier versions. The intro was very long (as you can hear) and very atmospheric. What you can't hear here is the new electro breakbeat that kicks in just seconds after this video stops (sorry, my arm was getting tired from holding up the cam!). Again it sounds much more solid this time. This is gonna be one of the highlights of the album I think.

UNDERWORLD (live): By far the highlight of the festival the British duo opened with material from their new album, Oblivion with Bells.

They were welcomed with roars of approval by the rammed Renaissance arena which showed no signs of the Ejekt Festival in Greece where anarchists, armed with CS gas, iron bars and baseball bats stormed the event leaving Rick Smith injured.
Karl Hyde was magically dressed in a sparkly gold bingo style suit jacket and his live vocals had the crowd loving every minute.

They played Cowgirl and Rez fairly early and ended with Jumbo. This was a truly special performance which made Wild in the Country memorable.

Killer tune: Born Slippy (of course)
Rating: 9/10

Ten years on from my last pure dance festival (Tribal Gathering '97) and apart from Underworld I was pretty disappointed.

This is probably more me not moving with how the dance scene has changed.

I loved the Underworld set, but as others have said it seemed short after four hours of Sascha & John Digweed.

Slightly disappointed there was no 'River Run' material, but it was a short set, and they did a lot of crowd pleasers. 'Kittens' was my highlight, such a hard and blasting pure techno track.

As for the festival, I know it was not such a big event as the Tribal Gathering was, but there just were not enough live bands, nor enough variation in the DJs. No 'Chill Out' tent, so you could relax a bit before going back for the next dance session. I know the weather didn't help with this, no lying on the grass just letting music wash over you from the nearest tent.

At the Tribal Gathering I had to leave a couple of bands early to get into the tent for the next band I wanted to see, at 'Wild in the Country' there just came a couple of hours of waiting for Underworld, with no variation in the acts to pass the time.

I thought Sascha & John Digweed were great for the first hour, but then the set seemed to be padded to fill a too longer time.

As I said this might just be me not moving with how dance has become far more DJ oriented than live bands, but I don't think I would bother going to another pure dance festival unless more live acts were playing. I prefer seeing DJ in a club, and can move on when I have had enough.

Really looking forward to the tour, no waiting hours for Underworld, hopefully longer and more experimental sets, a new album of material to hear, roll on November.

Jamie
