View Full Version : Leftfield recordings thread: that 'old' Leftfield show (begging for a copy)

ok, a few years ago - someone was able to get their hands on a soundboard recording of an actual Leftism -era show

I have never been able to find said recording, despite checking many torrent sites, blogs etc etc

and I have a feeling that at least one or two people here has it...

is there any chance someone could upload it onto like sendspace or megaupload???

If you've only got the show in FLAC... I wouldn't mind if it was in like a decent/high bitrate mp3.... I'm just in the need of a real "Leftfield Fix" and well... I've got most/all "Rhythm & Stealth" tour recordings and bsides (save for ...strangely enough, Swords*)

*I was able to get mp3's of that one, but the cd was scratched to hell, and it has gaps & pops throughout = unlistenable

ahhhhh i remember seeing leftfield during the leftism tour in '96. still got the original tour t-shirt........one of the top 5 concerts i've ever been to, worth the money just for the 10+ minute version of 'song of life' ....brings a shiver to my spine even thinking about it:D .......sadly i do not have any live reccording from that time.....

you guys should for ever be indebted to me and my contacts who used to work on soundboard desks in 1996. :D

i remember reading that at the london launch party of the leftism album where they played live there was a free punch which someone spiked with E. needless to say reports of said night/gig were overwhelming positive :D

i saw em on the R&S tour and they were loud, one of the loudest gigs i've been too save for My Bloody Valentine. Although two mates who saw em on the leftism tour said it was nowhere near as loud as back then. before doing their own version of the 4 yorkshiremen "loud, loud's when you can't hear for a week afterwards" "pardon, you'll have to speak up i'm still deaf in one ear after that gig" "ears, we used to dream of unperforated ear drums back then". At that stage i left them giggling by themselves to go to the bar.

personally i didn't think leftfield live were all that great, was kind of disappointed. although dave clarke afterwards was lots of fun

hey, seems the forums are a bit scattered these days... what'd you ever dig up?

sorry. I'm actually in San Diego at the moment, but I'll be back home on Wednesday. so - IF I still have the leftfield shows that I was given a while back, they'll be uploaded by Thursday morning at the latest

I thought that I'd be able to track everything down before I left, but I had a bunch of stuff randomly come up last minute (plus with dirty down for so long, I kinda forgot)

if I remember correctly, I had (all from the R+S tour and either broadcast or soundboard) Glasto, Brixton, Brighton (..maybe), and um.. I forget the actual name of the location - something like Tilburg - it was the same place as that one UW show where they played Brue Lee, and a version of Moaner with some wonky beats at the beginning -> I THINK it was in the Netherlands

oh yea - and I had a recording of a Paul Daley live set with Cheshire Cat MC-ing

and that Montreux video as well - but that might be too large to upload onto sendspace, etc

if I have lost all these shows... I'll at least upload some of the rare-er studio releases that I've got (like Phat Planet version 2, release the dubs, etc)

which reminds me - does ANYONE have that one promo of Rhythm & Stealth that came out quite a while before the album got released? Like, it didn't even have full-length tracks (everything was a minute-and-a-half max), but they were all alternate, early versions - some had different track titles, and some songs were NEVER released

I FOUND THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, here's what I've got on hand now -

Live At Brighton Centre, 31-10-00
Live At Cardiff University, 26-10-00
Live At Glastonbury, 21-07-00
Live At London Arena, 1-1-01
Live At Tilburg, 2000
Live In Paris, 29-03-00
Leftfield - Live At Montreux 2000 (VCD Video).mpg
Internet Chat, Oct 26 2000 (Cardiff).rm (video)

and two mp3 files (each 128kbps) from the Leftism live tour. One is one hour and twelve minutes in length and the other is about 20 min, it sounds a bit dry (as if directly from the mixing board)

none are audience recordings, but I think at least one is a webcast, another is off of a video tape (or a tv broadcast at least) and the others are all off the radio - I think (maybe one is soundboard, but I kinda doubt it)

I'll upload .... Tilburg up first... as I remember that being pretty damn good

Inspection 10:51
Afrika Shox 10:55
Song of Life 8:53
Phat Planet 10:26

not many tracks, yes - but each is pretty damn long!

Hi there,

just a few additions:

The Leftism live recording surfaced on soulseek in two parts a few years ago from someone who said he recorded it thru the Mixing desc in Nottingham in 1994.
Although the mixing desc and Nottingham are correct, I heavily doubt the date as LEFTFIELD didn't play live in 1994 and the LIVISM tour took place in 1996...

The R&S promo was actually called "11edits".
It was sold at ebay in 2003 to a buyer who never bought anything else before and after and the CD was never seen again... :-(
Here's the track list:

Poor man chant
Twist & Burn
Dusted
El Cid
Phat Planet
Swords
Battle of broken phunk
Rino's prayer
Afrika Shox
6/8 war
Double Flash

I'd love to hear these versions!!!

Speaking of ebay, I bought the Montreux video from a Swizz seller a few years ago, transferred it from VHS to Video-CD and shared it with the members of the (long gone and sadly missed) LEFTFIELD forum!
Here's a link for you again:

http://rapidshare.com/files/102528119/LEFTFIELD_-_Montreux_2000.zip.001

http://rapidshare.com/files/102530997/LEFTFIELD_-_Montreux_2000.zip.002

Size: 141 MB
Password: Georg.

It's an avi-video (Xvid) in two parts (of one file)
46 minutes edit (swizz tv - there exists also a full show radio broadcast)
video: 310x220 pixels (to reduce size)
audio: 96kbps,44 kHZ, stereo

I hope you'll like it! :-)

Everything's correct, that's the way the split files are!
You need a file archiver to unpack them again.
For example use "7-zip" (www.7-zip.org (http://www.7-zip.org)) .
It's open source and freeware.
Just click on my first file (001), enter the password and the programm does the rest.

EDIT: Just a tag-on with regards to the loudness debate earlier in the thread, you're probably thinking about the infamous Brixton Academy gig in 1996*, which caused plaster to fall from the roof and a subsequent ban on the particular soundsystem being brought anywhere near the venue again :D

joethelion - your list of leftfield stuff looks awfully familiar....hehehe

regarding the tilburg one: it was recorded off the radio for me by a chap in the netherlands, we ended up doing a trade for it. similarly with the montreux video, i received it in a trade in 2002 as a svcd, so i ripped it (EDIT - yeah it was georg! hehehe, i miss the leftfield boards....i'll have to find out what darren's doing these days.....)
the nottingham and brighton ones, they came from a soundboard engineer that i had correspondence with on soulseek. he also included one of his own chill-out mixes on the second cd of the nottingham one. he labelled nottingham as 1994, but it's actually 1996-04-23, rock city, nottingham (EDIT #2, i think georg already said this!)
the cardiff one was corrupt, so that has to be reencoded by me, circa 2001ish.
thirdly, i now have lots more stuff, mainly dj sets by messers daley and barnes circa 1992 to 2000. the early ones are the best, they drop lots of their own remixes....and occasionally a choon like song of life.

to recap:
homelands, cardiff, glasto, london and tilburg are all fm radio recordings.
nottingham and brighton are from the soundboard dats.
and i'll be uploading new recordings soon when i've had time to sort them all out....there's a full video of the brixton academy '96 gig, by the way....

p.s. georg! i'll sort out my lucid rhythms stuff eventually! i've just been really busy with university work!

i'm back off into hibernation now....catch you guys later....

Georg.

At the very first Leftfield gig, in Amsterdam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amsterdam), the Dutch police were close to arresting the sound-man due to the sound system reaching illegal volumes. At the next concert, in Belgium (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium), thirty people were given refunds after complaining that the sound level was too high, leading to a newspaper headline reading "Leftfield Too Loud". In June 1996, while the group was playing at Brixton Academy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brixton_Academy), the sound system caused dust and plaster to fall from the roof; subsequently, the group was banned from ever returning to the venue. The ban however was taken by the band as a ban on the sound system and not themselveswhich was confirmed when Leftfield played Brixton on 20th May 2000

On 10/10/2007 after the Underworld gig at Norwich, Flywaver took a couple of Nurofen but it was well worth it!

this is interesting because ive been listening to Leftism again recently. I tried all the links through the thread but most of them seem broken or don't work. If someone could PM me the show in '96 I would appreciate it much. I remember getting the Underworld show in Germany in '96 and I wore the thing out thanks to you guys.

crank
01-15-2010, 09:52 AM
yes please, Caprice is seconded.
What's odd to me is how little there is out there. The Google doesn't turn up anything to speak of. I mean i dug 9 or 10 pages in... where'd these guys go?

I have some live stuff, not much. Anyone have any server space to host? We could set up a bit of a server for these shows?

01-15-2010, 08:57 PM
Kudos to Crank for reviving the thread and inspiring me to revisit my Leftfield albums. Both are banging and welll-produced, but "Leftism" is so much more the interesting journey for me. The live shows i've heard are just CRAZY LOUD and leverage the big-beat style that marked "Rhythm and Stealth", but fact is, this band had a "leftfield" musical sensibility beyond what was recorded.

crank
01-17-2010, 05:22 PM
Seriously, Just like Second Toughest, Leftism NEVER gets old to me. It's strange that both records still sound fresh even almost 20 years on.

joethelion
01-18-2010, 11:17 AM
yea ...

and I was thinking about "Rhythm and Stealth" not too long ago while I was listening to a dubstep compilation (specifically, "Five Years of Hyperdub")

there's really not that much of a leap between the stuff that Leftfield were doing late in their career, and what's considered 'dubstep' now

like Swords, Chant of a Poor Man, Rino's Prayer ... and some of their remixes/bsides

btw - has ANYONE ever gotten their hands on that one super rare Leftfield promo of "Rhythm and Stealth"? It only has 1-2min clips of the songs, but they are different mixes than what eventually came out, and there are some unreleased tracks as well on it

Caprice, look at the previous page. there are two sendspace links.

joetheliion- I have the promo copy but it's not the one you are referring to, or at least i don't think it is. My copy is just red no album artwork with full songs? don't know. don't think it's diff.

joethelion

I think this is the promo I was talking about...

http://www.discogs.com/Leftfield-Rhythm-Stealth/release/961637

but it's still different than from what I remember reading ...

I only heard about it on the old Leftfield "Not Forgotten" Forum. Someone found an ebay listing that claimed to have a promo copy of R+S. The album also had "Snake Blood" and "A Final Hit" included... and I want to say at least one or two completely new tracks. The ebay listing went for loads of cash (which I didn't have)

yea ... it's a shame

but it also makes sense

I mean, they did only release two albums
and even though they did do a lot of remixes, they all kinda stopped half way through the 90's

I just don't get how neither one of them (Leftfield) seem to be doing ANYTHING

and what little each of them have released... sounds nowhere near as good as anything they did as a duo

The Afro-Left EP (EP)

I didn't even know he had an album!!!

All I've got of his is a kinda-shitty-but-almost-interesting remix of "Anarchy in the UK"

oh - I've also got some stuff by ______ forget his name - he was like the "unofficial third member of Leftfield"... Nick something... anyways, it's pretty good dubby bleepy/minimal stuff

and a few EP's

There are still some remixes of theirs that I'm after... anyone want to do a mp3 swap?

Nick Rapaccioli. He released music on Verticle Form that was great. His Bushflange stuff is great too. Redokov is killer.

all should be at least in 320kbps

1992 Inner City - Hallelujah (Leftfield Mixes)
1992 Release The Dubs
1992 Song Of Life
1993 Open Up
1993 Open Up Remixes
1995 Original
1995 The Afro-Left EP
1996 Release The Pressure

Live At Glastonbury, 21-07-00
Live At London Arena, 1-1-01
Live At Tilburg, 2000
Live In Paris, 29-03-00

I also have two files labeled as "leftfield live disc 1" and "leftfield live disc 2" which are 128kbps files - although, they're recorded from the soundboard and it's from the Liveism tour

random files:
[vform 001] Nick Rapaciolli - Rapaccioli EP 1
[vform 001CD] Pub - Summer
[vform 002] Split Project
[vform 021] Nick Rapaccioli - Compare
Radiohead vs Leftfield - Idioteque (Ndark's Phat Planet Fusion Mix)

hmmm... but that totally can't be everything
I might have to do some digging - b/c I know I've got at least one 12" that's not in that list (I think it's "Release the Pressure" but not the one listed above) and I have a full-length concert video, some music videos and other stuff SOMEWHERE

damn

talk about coincidences, eh?

but - I'm thinking that the odds of them making it to the US is pretty damn slim :(

although.... my g/f has been talking about making a trip to the EU this summer, here's hoping that Leftfield just happen to be in the same country....

oh - and I seem to be missing some tracks (that I KNOW I used to have)
hopefully, they're just on an old external HD (in a poorly labeled folder) but just in case... could someone hook me up with these tracks?

it's just incredibly frustrating, as I HAD ALL OF THESE at one point (and not just as mp3 files, I also had many of the actual releases)

• Dusted (Radio Edit)
• Snakeblood
• Swords ("Go" soundtrack version... it's a bit longer, and has a bit more bass - if memory serves me)
• Space Shanty (Tribal Mix)
• Space March
• Double Flash (Brown & Nasty Remix)
• A Final Hit (Full Length Version -> this one was on the "Trainspotting Soundtrack #2"... I seem to recall a pretty decent mix of Iggy Pop's "Nightclubbing" too if anyone happens to have that....)
• Praise
•.Half Past Dub
• Open Up (the longer version from the 12" edition of Leftism)
• Neil Barnes - Playing With Fire
• ...the "Song of Life" remixes & Dub of Life
• Massive Attack - Butterfly Caught (Paul Daley Beatless Mix) <- not the "Dub Mix"
• I also had this pretty cool breaks mix of Phat Planet (and it wasn't the Fatboy Slim mash-up)

oh - and I've never been able to get my hands on a copy of the "Leftfield Instrumental" Mix of David Bowie's "Jump (They Say)". I just have the Vocal, Hard Hands Vocal, and the Dub Oddity mixes

Hey - I actually found most / all of those files I was missing...

...yea - they were in a stupidly labeled folder on an old external hd ("new music")

so I've found:
* Space March
* Swords (Original Version)
* Snakeblood
* Praise
* Half Past Dub
* Open Up (Extended Version f/ the 3x12")
* I'm not sure if I listed it before, but I also found the "Original" single, and Original (Drift)

...but if anyone has 320 kbps copies of Praise or Half Past Dub....

but I still need:
• Dusted (Radio Edit)
• A Final Hit (Full Length Version)
•.Phat Planet (Breaks Mix) <- I do have, however this mix as a part of a dj set
• Space Shanty (Tribal Mix) <- I only ever had that as an mp3, and it's in 128kbps :(
•.David Bowie - Jump they Say (Leftfield Instrumental Mix)
•.The Song of Life Remixes (by Rick & Darren)

...and during my search through old files, I also found -

Leftfield - Live At Montreux 2000 (VCD Video).mpg
Afrika Shox (Video) (feat. Afrika Bambaataa).mpg
Afro-Left (SVCD Video).avi
Dusted (Video) (feat. Roots Manuva).mpg
Internet Chat, Oct 26 2000 (Cardiff).rm
Open Up (SVCD Video).mpg
Original (SVCD Video).mpg
Planet of the Phatbird (Video).mpg
Release The Pressure (Video).mpg
Swords (Video) (feat. Nicole Willis).mpg

For Leftfield, anyone who already has a dropbox, be aware that the 2GB sharing is for your whole account. i have over 10GB in my dropbox though, so I'll need to set it up so that other people can put stuff in my public dropbox rather that read-only. Not sure how i do that atm.

I've set up an aDrive at adrive.com.

Pros:
This gives a massive 50GB of sharing.
Files can be publicly shared
Can upload whole folders of stuff

Cons
no desktop client (for free accounts)
only one person can login to upload files at a time
file browsing requires logging in
publicly shared link URLs expire in 14 days and have to be re-shared
only 5 people can download the same file at a time
1TB bandwidth usage per month?

Also setup an accounts at OpenDrive which gives 5GB with a 1GB bandwidth limit per day, and an eSnips account also 5GB, and Humyo which is giving 10GB and i'm doing more testing with that at the moment. I'd sooner settle for 10GB and more convenience than 50GB and having to jump thru hoops like that.

MS Skydrive has filesize limitations of 100mb or 50mb anyway too small. Dropbox is still looking the best but Humyo also looks good so far, and you can stream/play mp3s directly from the site. Need to find out how to do public sharing...

A great idea is to talk about this on IM. You can find me at stimpee007 on skype. I'm messing with Humyo which is giving 5GB for free so contact me on skype or email me on gmail -> stimpee001

So far created an account for Darktrain and added myself to the friend list. Seems that this way you can add files and folders to be shared. Works in the same way as dropbox i think so you although someone else shares 1GB with you, it comes out of both your share totals.

and honestly ... as far as live gigs

they really didn't have much variation in set-lists - so it's like... if you find two or three different recordings from the R+S Tour - then you pretty much know what every show on that tour was like

And I don't think I ever found a Liveism Tour recording that was decent... like - there are at least one or two soundboard recordings, but (if memory serves me - I haven't listened to them in a long time) there's bad distortion throughout many of the songs

there were however, some really great b-sides and whatnot
and I still haven't tracked them all down

Are there really other bootlegs out there from the Liveism tour other than Nottingham? And does anyone really have anything better than a 192kbps MP3 of it?

Reason for asking is that about 18 months ago I made contact with one of the guys who did the lightshow on the tour. If I remember our chat rightly the Nottingham recording only came about by chance with one of the sound crew sticking a DAT in to record the gig. The DAT itself went missing shortly afterwards and I remember the guy being surprised any kind of copy had surfaced.

I do know that MTV filmed the Manchester gig on the tour, including band interviews, but whether it was ever screened I have no idea. I would LOVE to get my hands on that tape!

Doing some more research on this a few years ago it also looked as if one of the 1995 UK festival appearances had been recorded (and broadcast?) on radio.

Does anyone know any more about either of these?

i'm profoundly late to the party as usual...

Just in case there is someone out there who hasn't got it yet, here's the 2 part live recording of the Liveism tour:

http://rapidshare.com/files/351428685/LF_-_Nottingham_Liveism_1996.rar
this link's still live, downloading now - cheers georg!

what's the best r&s tour recording(s) to look out for? any help/links appreciated
also if any new recordings turn up from the current shows, that'd obviously be awesome.

i was lucky enough to catch them live at homelands in 2000 - being a festival set it wasn't anything like as loud as they were famous for, and i was having a slightly frustrating drug experience (or lack thereof), but still enjoyed the show :)

the brixton 96 gig was filmed too.
also:
the nottingham recording is from rock city, 1996.
the recording comes from some cdrs that were made by the sounddesk guys. the end of cd2 has a chill-out mix for some reason on it.

best r&s recording is homelands.

Damn, you're right - 96, not 95. Stupid mistake - I should have spotted it as I saw them at Southampton at the end of May that year.

Do you mean this footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFH8zeQDc04 for Brixton '96? If so, they didn't film the whole thing unforuntunately, just a few bits and pieces.

Do we know of any copies of the CDRs at higher bitrate, or even FLAC? I'd kill for that ;)

Many thanks for this thread which I stumbled on by chance. As an old Leftfield fan (saw them plenty of times back in the day, think my favourite was Brixton Academy in 98 or 99 I think, so very loud!, my girl-friend at the time freaked out and had to leave as she felt the bass was stopping her breathe!)

With thanks I have just downloaded the Nottingham 1996 gig, Ive always wanted a Liveism recording - wicked and appreciated.

The Electric Picnic Irish download is nice and clear, but without the bass of the Homelands 2000 download.

Looking forward to Leftfield this Friday back at Brixton Academy after all these years, they were great in Hackney LED festival this summer, but as some else says in this thread you get the best volume and bass from them indoors. maybe some of you guys will be there?

Many thanks again and remember You Are Original:)

Cheers - that's a fantastic find, and really good quality too considering the age. In terms of content, I was surprised how different Afro Left sounded from the version on the Nottingham boot.

I'm presuming the footage originates from the MTV shoot so wonder if any more of it survives and might leak? Looking at the list again, there were around a dozen tapes of Leftfield stuff back in the day, but given it's 15 years ago now (god, that makes me feel old) and the changes at MTV since, the chances probably aren't great of it surviving :(

Actually, 128 Kbps is the bitrate of the stream that you listen to on SoundCloud (everything gets downconverted to 128 Kbps for the streaming). It could very well have been uploaded in higher quality, but that higher quality is not accessible unless the uploader activates the download link. Offliberty can only download the stream.

well - honestly - ANY of them...

I seem to remember the Nottingham show from the Leftism Tour was pretty good (both in terms of sound & performance)

Just going back through this thread - I know I posted most (if not all) of these

Live At Brighton Centre, 31-10-00
Live At Cardiff University, 26-10-00
Live At Glastonbury, 21-07-00
Live At London Arena, 1-1-01
Live At Tilburg, 2000
Live In Paris, 29-03-00
Live At Montreux 2000
Homelands 2000

...But I really wouldn't need all of those R+S Tour Shows, as the set list was basically identical...

(so only one or two would be nice)

although I seem to remember one of those listed above included "Dub Gusset" as an opener, while the others didn't (but I can't remember which)

and w/ the London show they actually had Afrika Bambaataa come on stage...

...and either Tilburg or Glastonbury was really good...

Also - Did anyone know that they just released a live album from the most recent tour?!??! I'm really surprised there seems to have been absolutely zero promotion for it (or is it just b/c I haven't bought any music magazines for a while???) I only found out about it via google searching for those older shows!

In terms of available pre-R&S live recordings all I can think of are:

- Nottingham '96 soundboard in 128kbps only

- Some of Brixton video on YouTube
- Song of Life live session on YouTube

Am I missing anything?

joethelion

you know... I actually was never able to replace the recordings that I lost.

I did manage to find:

"Live 1996" recording ...this is the one that was mentioned earlier as being on Soundcloud (it's a soundboard recording, 256 kbps mp3)

- and -

"Glastonbury Festival, UK, 24-06-2000" ...as 160 kbps mp3's

Of course, I still have that "Liveism" official release.

It's too bad, as I remember the Montreux 2000 concert being good, as was the show that included "Dub Gusset"

If you want - I can upload "Live 1996" and "Glastonbury" - but it probably won't be until tomorrow at the very earliest...

Ok, I am horribly late to this thread... but would anyone be kind enough to help me in getting my hands on some early Leftfield live soundboard recordings? Perhaps I could help you out with something you may be looking for. Of course, I got Tourism and I have Exit 2015. Looking for shows back in 2000-ish or earlier. Appreciate anyone that can help a brother out.

Also, anyone have the Rhythm And Stealth with different track lengths?

I recently discovered a Leftfield track I never heard before. It's a track called "Praise" from 1995 that was featured on a radio station compilation. I bought the CD to rip it in lossless. I also finally found a lossless CD rip of "Half Past Dub," which was only available on the Leftism vinyl. I found it on another compilation under a different name. I am still looking for a lossless rip of "Original (Drift)" though and a particular version of "Open Up (Remixes)". I got a bunch of Leftfield releases ripped, including remixes, mostly in lossless, if anyone could help me out.

Cheers!

So Nottingham 1994 was in fact recorded April 23rd, 1996 at the Rock City in Nottingham...

Well I appreciate the help. I had no clue when Leftfield's first performance was. All I knew was that they've been releasing music since 1990, so seeing a show labeled 1994 would make one believe it is a show from 1994. So it's not that farfetched to think they have played back then. So this is actually the 1996 show? Even after so many years people are still labeling it 1994 lol. Think people would have caught up by now as I've seen this 1994 show elsewhere and didn't know it was the one I was looking for.

Does anyone have recordings from Leftfield's tours in either 2015 or 2016?

I stumbled across their performance of "Swords" from '16 - and it caught me by surprise. I didn't think they played anything from R&S other than "Phat Planet" and "Afrika Shox". I just did a quick skim through setlist.fm.... and it looks like they only played non-Leftism songs during the 2015/16 tours

Ok, not a recording, but I thought this was a great photo shared by the band over on Twitter:

It's Georgia (Neil's daughter, now a musician in her own right) on the shoulders of Nick Rapaccioli at their T in the Park set in 1996.

Dude! Would it be possible to get a download? Hate to rip it off Soundcloud and get double compression. I have a live recording from Cardiff 2000 that I can upload as a thank you. Cheers man!

I love live recordings, but hate Soundcloud. I like to put on my SD card and listen to live shows on long drives.
