How does someone[me] get an idea for a short film i think is actually pretty decent to people wo may actually get it made etc. Doing it on a student budget is quite hard.

I've always thought that making a short about common events on empty/melancholic citizens, may result something interesting... but I do not think this way anymore. Nowadays, young film students have exploited this very simple idea so much that this simple plot is like a plague.

I bet you must have an idea. It could be simple. Less is more.

I went to film shool in downtown Chicago, and I cannot tell you how many student films have been made about bums/heartbreak & immature relationships/loneliness/annoying apartment sounds (waking up to an alarm clock/dripping water). There's very few truely creative films that I saw in my four years there, and even less with adult themes (as most students are 18-23).

what did David Lynch had in mind, when making his impressive very first short?

Interesting characters are what drive any story, be it a short or a feature length film. Come up with a great character, and you'll have a succesful film.
