Welcome to the Dirty Movie Club!

Here are the ground rules. Feel free to suggest others / changes you think might be a good idea. This thread will act as the base of operations for the club.

Every 1 to 2 weeks, one member of the club will post a thread titled "Dirty Movie Club: Name of movie. In the first post they should include a brief synopsis, a small bit on why they chose that movie, and any links to external sites of interest (IMDB, Amazon, etc).

Any movie is allowed to be submitted. Feature length animations are also eligible. TV shows, live music recordings and pornography are not eligible. The movie should be readily available for purchase / rent / (legal) download.

No links to pirate copies of any movie will be tolerated.

You do not have to participate in discussion every week. However, if you fail to participate for more than, say, 3 movies, your turn to submit a movie may be forfeit and given to someone more active.

New members can join the club at any time, but they will be added to the bottom of the list. Join by replying to this thread.

The first batch of members will be randomised.

And with that, here's the member list, in order of who posts when.

suggestion: since we're so close, how about one of the films nominated for the best picture (or best foregin film) oscar?

Awesome! I promise not to quit like the dirty writing club :)

Tom

how about one of the films nominated for the best picture (or best foregin film) oscar?

If they're available on DVD, they're fair game. I think including movies that are still showing at the theatres would be a bad idea - they cost a lot more, and don't show everywhere at the same time. What do you guys think?

chuck
02-05-2007, 03:33 AM
I'm with Tom - if we can keep it to DVD available movies - that would be handy. Being down here in the backwater south pacific - we don't often get releases the same time as you lot up there in the NH.

unless it's a movie about a hobbit and/or large gorillas.

Does imdb include release schedules?

I was going to pick "Back to School" with Dangerfield, BUT being #8 on the list, feelings WILL change when my turn comes.

It's all of you guyses loss. :D

It's a nice idea (the watch an Oscar movie before the Oscars thing), but watching one of them might be a problem for me. I'll be able to participate better if it's available on Netflix.

A question: are we allowing full-length documentaries to count as movies? I don't have any one documentary in mind, but I'm asking just so we know our boundaries.

Tom
02-05-2007, 01:07 PM
Yeah, I see no reason to exclude them.

without cheese there would be no Inland Empire

cheese comes from milk

do you understand?

grady

yes, cheese is essential to the enjoyment of film and especially inland empire.

I PM'd chino when I made the post.

How about we bump him/her for the next person down - Strangelet. Chino will get the next go, if he/she is around.

edit: PM sent to Strangelet

yay for Joe vs. the volcano. It raises a question for me though.

I guess the answer to this should be somewhat loose in order to keep as few rules as possible here, but what's the general idea on re-watching something you've already seen? I'll probably try to watch everything even if I know it well just to make sure I remember everything.

and also what kind of timeframe should we all aim for...2 weeks? a month? give time for netflix to work?

Tom
02-08-2007, 04:23 PM
Well, I think we should try to keep it under a month, definitely. What's the turn around on Netflix?

Also, regarding rewatching movies you've already seen, I think it's probably best that we do, so everything is fresh in our heads, but it is of course up to each individual.

I'll update the first post in this thread with everyone's movie choice and a link to the thread, to try to keep things a bit more organised. I'm also closing the old thread, so all movie club stuff should be posted in here.

For myself it generally goes like this: I send a movie back let's say on Monday, I get an email saying they've received it on Wednesday and another email saying they're sending a new one out, and I get it on Friday. Sometimes there is a lag in delivery, but generally that's the turnaround time (I'm quite a ways from the nearest Netflix center in Denver, so if you actually lived in Denver, you'd probably get a new movie in half the time).

I'd say 2-3 weeks would be the best time frame. I'd shoot for 2 weeks, personally.

Tom
02-09-2007, 02:29 AM
OK, so if we said people should try to aim at getting a response posted within 2 weeks, that should be ok?

Let's trial that, and if it proves difficult, we'll extend the window.

(At 2 weeks, we've almost got enough people for a full year of this, hah!)

djeddy
02-16-2007, 12:02 AM
man i hope i get a chance to add my pick in. i think i'd tune you on to some pretty cool..albeit old..movies.

Tom
02-16-2007, 03:51 PM
So I was thinking maybe we should drop our suggestions weekly. Maybe it'll cause a bit of overlap, but it will help offset some of the netflix queue wait that some of you are probably having to deal with. Thoughts?

If we're in agreement, mr. miller can go ahead and post his this weekend :)

GreenPea
02-18-2007, 05:46 PM
I like this idea, I don't want to wait a year to submit my pick.

gambit
02-18-2007, 06:43 PM
I can go for that.

b.miller
02-18-2007, 07:44 PM
sweet. so chino's still MIA, huh?

hello-o-o-o?

Well mine is old (but readily available on DVD) so it might take people a while to track it down. therefore, i'm in agreement with the every-week thing. It might make for some picks falling through the cracks because movies will be announced before you have a chance to see the previous, but what the hell.. it's all about recomending movies anyway... as long as you see them at some point.

(i might also lax my own personal code for seeing movies i clearly remember based on how long it's taken for Joe vs. the volcano)

so... this upcoming weekend or should i lay my pick on y'all now?

Tom
02-18-2007, 11:39 PM
Go for it now, it's been a week since Strangelet's post.

Woop woop!

So I'm still waiting on Sweet Smell of Success to arrive, but at this point is it safe to make my own post?

(granted I still need to put up my thoughts on Joe vs. the Volcano. Damn dueling work schedules have sucked away my time.)

Tom
02-27-2007, 01:26 PM
Go fer it :)

Tom
03-01-2007, 12:57 AM
I really like the way b.miller and grady have formatted their posts, so maybe we can all kinda follow that format.

I should have all three movies this weekend, woop woop!

chuck
03-02-2007, 08:10 PM
Hmm - I guess I'm next then?

Still haven't had a chance to get the first two in, but will scratch my head and drop a suggestion on the rest of you.

Tom
03-20-2007, 07:36 PM
Sorry, I've been pretty busy the last few weeks.

I finally saw the first three movies, and I'll get my impressions up tonight :)

I'll chase chucker up on skype tonight aswell, and if he's too busy we'll bump him.

Woop!

I will admit I've been a complete flake, no part of mine, due to not one of the title being on hand at the 3 video stores closest to me.

I'm shocked about Joe vs. Volcano not being on hand a BlockBuster. That's almost blasphomy in the film world one would think.

Still waiting Smell Success to come in, I think it's should be arriving in the next few days.

I am having a hard time following up on this as well as my local Blockbuster sucks. I know that Blockbuster now has a NetFlix kind of service if I don't have to pay more for that I'll get on the ball with this (but prolly I have to subscribe heh)

Two weeks left until finals and I'm paying for procrastination, the story of my life.

Other than the sheer surprise of how great an artist, on every level of the term, Pryor is after watching this film (about 14 or 15 years of age & the world was still very new to me) this review pretty much sums it up. Apologies for flakiness, but children's nutrition classes SUCK!!!
