Not seen anyone talking about this here.

Warners have now released an official trailer (click (http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/300/))

I think this is looking incredible, one of the most mouthwatering trailers I've seen in a long time. Kickassery galore. Just hope the movie 'works' and isn't all style over substance.

Lord of The Rings meets Gladiator meets Troy meets Sin City meets The Matrix meets....?

let's hope it can live up to any of those movies. Trailer looks cool but also shows potential of being really bad/silly/corny. :)

the graphic novel is great and the trailer looks just like the graphic novel and my friends who saw the ComiCon footage said it looks amazing. high hopes!

I never read 300 because the comic is oversized. Anyone who's read my Tomato ranting knows how I feel about needlessly oversized comics and books.. I boycott them. If it doesn't fit on my shelf, I don't buy it. ;) But it does look ridiculously awesome and I'll see the movie no doubt. That trailer is too hot.

Eh, I wouldn't say it's a comic. Missing out on a few special graphic novels with that attitude I'm sure ;)

I bought this from Amazon last week - it's very short, but it looks incredibly similar to the trailer. Can't fucking wait.

wowza. it's pretty much the graphic novel in motion. I'd say better done than Sin City, leaving it to your personal tastest between the two books to determine which movie you like more. People that hadn't read it did mention it was a bit like watching a World of Warcraft game but whatever.. so much hacking, so much slashing. it was awesome.

guys, I saw this film at a test-screening this summer (august i think it was) and it is, like KoS suggested Gladiator meets Sin City, in all the right ways. the action sequences often speed-up/slow-down to highlight key hits and slashes, the blood spurting effects look quite like the book, and the acting is pretty solid all around (save for the hunchback, who i found a little annoying). my only minor issue with it was you could tell it was shot on a minimal stage with mostly green screen around. then again, not all the effects were finished when i saw it. also, the music was all temp so i can't comment on that. i'll defeinitely being seeing it properly when it's released.

I know, and it's a shame.. I also boycott hardcovers when a trade paperback will do just fine. Why pay more for cardboard? I have alot of weird rules. ;)

did we see the same movie??!?!? I found it BORING

first of all, it was a bit disctracting when I realized that you could seamlessly add "FUCK YEA!" after every other sentence in the film
(edit) seriously, try it when you see the movie: "we're spartans" (Fuck yea!) "you are my queen" (Fuck YEA!) 'you won't like this (f-yea)

then it was so violent that it lost all of its meaning. Like - I got bored just watching beheading after beheading (how many were there in total? it felt like a lot)

also - it was just obnoxious how many times they had close-ups of bloody spears... not that you saw it going through a person, it was just montage after montage of - oh look! a spear with blood on it... what's that - oh a spear, with blood on it... guess what? more spears with blood!

and the voice of the 10-12 foot transvestite (the main bad guy) seemed improperly dubbed over... and fake sounding (ok - he wasn't in drag, and that might've been somewhat historically accurate, but I couldn't stop thinking of Dennis Rodman half the time)

and what was up with his Crab-Man? He's only in one scene, and had giant crab-claws for arms ...and he beheads someone... I thought this was supposed to not include mythology?

Not a horrible movie, visually (I really thought that the oracle sequence was great... even when you see the dude who bribes them & he fades to black), but you see the same images over and over again - and it looses value.

the script was horrible, but I wasn't expecting much to begin with.

Now - I saw it in a semi-big theater... I would not reccommend seeing it in any sort of smaller venue, even dvd. I actually vow that I won't watch it on dvd, b/c then it'd be the most boring, long-ass movie ever to include gratuitus close-ups of bloody spears

fuck yea

Glad to see I'm not the only one who wasn't swayed/brain washed by this film. Yes, the visuals are impressive, but man was this boring. I gotta agree with Joe on some of the spear montages.

The film could've been a solid 90 minutes. Ninety minutes of mindless, unadultered violence. I found no real point of connection with the story or even the visuals. There is a good film scattered in bits and pieces amongst this one. Granted I did find myself grinning at points throughout the film, but not enough to recommend the film to anyone.

I can admire what the film is technically, but that is about it. I found the extended cut of the trailer from the comicon footage to be far more enjoyable. Additionally, they should've just used that nine inch nails song throughout the entire film's battle sequences, or hired Trent to make an uber extended version of the track plus other music

Did anyone else notice how they lifted the choral theme from Julie Taymor's Titus and just added some vocals?

Did anyone else chuckle when the queen said, "Freedom isn't free...."? I wanted to yell out, "It costs a buck-oh-five!"

To each his own I suppose. It's not an oscar film so don't think I'm claiming it to be like "movie of the year" material. It's just a good time at the movies for people who enjoy bloody fight scenes, and it's certainly not a thinker's film. I love some of the twists and surprises and believe that the story was entertaining and served the on-screen action well. The arrows in this clip alone warrant a ticket purchase if you ask me.........Click (http://youtube.com/watch?v=IRpbxrivNM4);)

I saw this yesterday with my company. I'd give it a C.

Good:

Art direction
No surprises here, it's a pretty thing to look at
Gerard Butler and Rodrigo Santoro
Good casting here
Gerard broadcasts presence and weight just by appearing on the screen
Rodrigo comes off truly despicable and you want him dead from the moment he first appears on the screenBad:

One dimensional characters
Which means I don't really care when they die
Don't give me the "It's just an action movie" bit - good action movies have good characters with development, which makes the action mean something:
Compare the head choppin' moment of this film with say that of Aargon's final slice in 'Fellowship of the Ring'
Silly script
In any movie less stylized the whole affair would devolve into unintentionally funny camp
This is probably more of a problem with the faithfulness to the source material but the whole mysticism vs. logic contrast in the two cultures is delivered in pretty clunky fashion
Particularly the last line of the movie - yuk
Highly played out film editing techniques
While I like the idea of slowing down the motion on frames taken straight from the graphic novel...
... I am sick and tired of the slow down, speed up bullshit I've seen in about five million car commericals up to this point
And really this technique hides the fact that few of the action moments are truly unique or memorable (the wall of dead dudes attack excluded) - there's just a whole lot of severing and poking going on
Contrast this with Kill Bill where I'm sure each of you could rattle off about at least a dozen memorable scenes from the movieSo yeah. It was okay.

adam
03-16-2007, 08:14 AM
Yeah, that was one of the things that really bugged me about the metafilter discussion - lots of folks were saying to those of us who didn't like it that we "just didn't get it." No, I got it. I can appreciate all these things when they're done properly - but when I'm laughing at things that aren't supposed to be funny and groaning at things that are supposed to be dramatic, something has gone wrong. I mean, I am perfectly happy to turn off all intelligent parts of my brain and enjoy some visceral entertainment - I liked XXX, for fuck's sake.

No criticism implied of those of you who liked it, I'm just objecting to the "you just don't get it" line.

amen to that brother. as a lover of the genre, it's not to be borne all the excuses by both fans and filmmakers to make actionfilms with boxes full of stupid. its like girl movies. do they have to have aretha franklin blasting while three generations of women sing in to hair curlers and plastic spoons? no.

I concur. (I just looked up the def. for this word and it means NOTHING that I thought it did.) Let me say, I disagree.

The film simply had the Jesus complex removed and chose to display solidarity in a common belief. That belief being freedom.

The creaters of this film achieved what they chose to accomplish I'm most certain of as well. ;)

special.

did it have anything interesting to say about freedom, other than its a kick butt excuse to spear people? i'm not saying action movies have to double as philosophical treaties, but "freedom" like "life" or "Love" mean so much they mean absolutely nothing in a general sense. Which means characters whose 1 dimensional existence was designed to scream "freedom!" and spear people means absolutely nothing. Whose freedom? freedom from what? can mel gibson even express freedom without blue face paint?

I had thought I was doomed to wait until this came out on DVD to see because here they over dub every English movie in French, which I happen to hate. Are people that pathetic that they can't read subtitles!!! I asked why they over dub, and was told that if they didn't people wouldn't go to the movies. Sad.

Anyway, I forgot that I was in Marrakech and for some reason the DVD of a movie comes out the week after the movie is released in the theater.;) So, I was really happy when one of my students called me up and said that he got a copy of it for me.:D

I thought that the action of this movie kicked ass. I didn't get tired or bored of seeing people speared or beheaded or anything. The parts I didn't like were the parts when they switched back to what was going on in the city. I think that if they just cut those parts out and made it all actions, fighting, killing, blood and more blood, and nude Persian women dancing, the movie would be the greatest!

I do agree with Scott too, about the ending line. It was crap.

All in all, I liked it but it is not one that has super repeat value.

The only parts that sucked in this movie were the parts not in the graphic novel - i.e. all the political shit with his wife. The last time you're suppose to see her is the goodbye. And she cries.

I think you should be able to just enjoy a flick without having to really care about the characters - the action was more than enough. And it's not like most people didn't know the story (I guarentee 80% of people looked it up before they went at saw it).

The only thing they needed was more tits. Like God of War.
