in the 50 heroes of dance music special this month
Underworld frontman Karl Hyde chooses....
John Peel
"I was ten years old when i heard John Peel on the radio at night. It was so different from daytime radio; he turned us on to so much, from Krautrock and German Eelctronica to dub reggae, Faust, Neu, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream - all the people who had a huge influence on Rick and I, and without John we wouldn't have been touched by these things. His show was exotic, a foriegn land. The Anglo-American music that was prevelant atthe time was so bland, and he introduced us to all this mad German and dub music. He opened up windows into strange places. Without John, i'd be stacking shelves."
Where to start: "He did a great 'Fabric Live' mix, but for the real Peel experience, get Faust's 'Wumme Years' box set. There's a disc of John Peel sessions on there too."
thats the whole piece KH did...
saves you buying it...
although there are several others worth reading (49 in fact naming their favourite dance music heroes), including New Order on Kraftwerk, The Chemical Brothers on New Order, Altern 8 on Derrick May
....
strangly no one chooses Underworld, although The Prodge and Orbital get mentions...
