Not that I'm exactly au fait with contemporary writers, Pelevin the one who when on form is certainly a bona fide genius. Mysticism, zen, drugs, humour, emmmmmmmm........Russian gangsters, garden sheds- he has it all. First encounter was his "Clay Machine Gun" oor Buddha's Little Finger in the US I think. Other highlights "Insects", "The Blue Lanern" and the wonderfully titled "A Werewolf Problem in Central Russia".

I have two collections of his short stories and like them a lot, and re-read them from time to time. I love the one about the chickens!

The chicken one excellent, I really liked the two sentries in Russia 1917, and Lenin trying to get past.
