expect to see new underworld member "fritz the monkey" replace darren price on the upcoming eastern europe gigs.resident advisor says "the new line up of underworld is finally complete 5 years after the departure of darren emerson".emersons first replacement darren price has now been replaced himself by "fritz the monkey" who was last seen in a hot chip video.fritz is quoted as saying "hot chip was always a stop gap for me and my agent told me if i kept my performance level up one of the big teams would have to come in for me before the transfer deadline closed".

sure you meant "Unbelievable" and not "inevitable" or "typical" or "finally" or "unfortunately"?
this really is a beautiful soundtrack. obviously quite soundtracky with cinematic strings and slowly evolving ambient stretches. it's the Steve Reich moments that really stick with me though. In particular St. Pancras and the final cut.
Fans buy the albums and i'll surely be buying this when i see it. I'll probably even see it at the cinema, just to hear the tunes loud.

Is it me, or is that "11 Hundred Hz" at the end of "Counterpoint Hang Pulse"?
Or, rather, I'm thinking now that "11 Hundred Hz" just refers to the low bass note (at 1100 Hz?) at the end of I'm a Big Sister..., and the piano part was always taken from "Counterpoint Hang Pulse".

Actually, Mr. Smith may be refering to 1,100 Hz. (The frequency range in which these piano notes seem to reside and/or roll off.) The human voice is also somewhere in the ballpark of 1000Hz, and the piano rides in there too. Low bass would be like, 110Hz.
I freaked when I saw the name. "11 Hundred Hz? How cool is that?" ;)

I got this last night but haven't had a chance to fully digest it.
Later after work I intend to.
What are people's thoughts on listening to a soundtrack before the film comes out?
Depending on the filmmaker I will hold out on a soundtrack until I've seen the film. Most Michael Mann films will not get a listen from me until I've seen the film. Same goes for Paul Thomas Anderson and Wes Anderson and Scorsese. There are probably some others I'm forgetting.
But the instance of underworld and this new Anthony Mineghella film presents a bit of a problem and I cannot resist new underworld music along with Mr. Yared's work.

After a few listens, I'm really enjoying the new soundtrack. This evening I spent an hour or so walking around Portland listening to the soundtrack straight through, then I sat for a while, had a drink, continued walking and listening.
I must say it is a bit more ambient than I was expecting, and the signatures of Mr. Smith and Mr. Hyde are evident to the listeners who know their work.
yeah.. normally i'd wait to bother with soundtracks/scores until i've caught the film. but this for me was a special case seeing as this has been such an intriguing offshoot for uw that i couldn't resist when i stumbled on it. if anything it's really piqued my interest in seeing the film, whereas prior to hearing this i was pretty blase about catching it. i'm actually very interested now in experiencing, if at the very least, the soundtrack in it's intended form.
crank - this isn't elitism. it's a discussion. about stuff that, if you'd dig hard enough around for on the net, you'd be listening too right now as well.

yeah, as Lloyd says, it is coming out, and some people have, like always, managed to get hold of promos of this in advance and hence it shouldn't be made a rtsr type file to share, because eventually you should be able to buy this along with everyone else at the usual places, and perhaps leagally download it.
if someone who does happen to have it copies and sends it to you its their and your own doing and perhaps should not be discussed here...

okay, i have to clarify myself. i didn't wanted to give the impression that there are copies of b&e on RTSR, what i meant is that there's irc-channel to talk about stuff like this, because it doesn't belong on this board here. as bbs put it:

Also, a very good way to stop the spread of leaked albums is to withhold your review of it pre-release. Only about 3 of your here posted reviews of this album so far but it more then enough to send me on my merry way looking for the tracks. I probably wouldn't have even thought to do this had no one told me how they are listening to it right now and how great it is. How can my fanboy patience possibly compete with that?

I guess one could add spoiler tags, but fanboy patience for myself dwindles quickly when I know I can be hearing the music in 2-5 minutes tops. Additionally, a discussion thread could be started up that is for those who have listened to it and those who choose not to until they've seen the film or purchased a tangible copy of the soundtrack (or an intangible copy via I-tunes or another source.)

It's a soundtrack. It sounds like a sound track. I like it. I'll buy it, but it's not Great. I'll buy it because I downloaded the trax and I'm somewhat of a completist. It reminds me of Ryuiki Sacamoto (spelling?). Really. Fav part: is the ambient guitar and the use of silence throughout. Nice negative space.

Thats very strange for you to bring that up, I just started listening to Sakamoto for the first time AFTER I finished listening to this album! His new album "Chasm" rocks! Well, it doesn't really "rock"...but it's pretty great.

imagine how surprised i was when i saw it listed! imagine the anticipation i had waiting for it since it was mentioned many months ago. we heard about he soundtrack ages ago. that anticipation built until the album leaked. anticipation satisfied by hearing leak. conscience satisfied when album purchased.
it's 2006, the cat's out of the bag and there's no turning back. if you don't want it early, don't get it. if you're so driven by what other people have and what you don't have, then that's another issue altogether. i'm not saying you as in you-holden, that's the global you.

the moment it's leaked IS the actual release date :)
Why hold yourself to some record company's schedule if you can get the music right now? (as long as you buy an actual copy when it does come out of course).
Waiting for the "actual release date" doesn't make hearing the music more exciting for me really. Even buying the actual cd doesn't hold the same value as it used to. First thing I'll do is rip it to mp3 and then put the cd on the shelf. Convenience over quality, I know but in this case convenience wins out.

No worries! i appreciate your comments and i'm glad that everyone's anticipation is satisfied by the music, not a sense of "having it first".
i've thought about this a lot, actually, because in the past, i have done my share of "previewing" music that i didn't intend to replace with an actual purchased item, and i started feeling very guilty. Not just from the standpoint of effectively stealing music, but also that i'd robbed myself of a lot of the tangible qualities t hat i enjoy about music: the search for the actual record, the artwork, the building of a collection. Sometimes this leads to great discoveries and the decision to purchase much more than just the leaked album. And surely folks around here are UW fanatics that'll buy the OST anyway, and this is definitely not a mass-marketable record, so it's less of an issue to obtain a preview before the CD is released. But it pisses me off, the people who lead and share and feel entitled to freebies, no support for the artists whatsoever.
It was said that Cds killed the era of album art innovation that you got with the larger-format vinyl records. Now, downloading is ending the age of tangible sound recordings. Problem is, the electronic media is just as fragile as a record, tape or CD is, and it's becoming a problem as to how these tremendous collections of mp3s will be readable or even preserved in the future. Yes, it's convenience over quality in many cases. i just respectfully prefer quality.

Woah, this album has got awesome dynamic range unlike most albums from the last years.
I received my (amazon) cd few days ago... I think it's an awesome OST, beautiful sound production & very nice cover & booklet...
It's very interesting as a result of the collaboration between UW & Gabriel Yared which, knowing their previous works, was not really predictable. The use of Karl's voice just like an instrument is sooo nice, and Steve Reich's influences are always cool.
I definitely love St Pancras, Monkey Two, Will And Amira, Mending Things & Counterpoint Hang Pulse. Can't wait to see the film (unfortunately not before 14th march 2007 here )
Definitely a very cool way for waiting a new UW cd in 2007... :)
