View Full Version : What UW track "gets to you"?

...and by that i mean, makes you just a lil bit melancholy? So many of their tracks are uplifting, life-affirming, and it's easy to say, "oh, King of Snake always makes me dance", or "when i hear Cowgirl, i go mental!"
Any that hit you a lil deeper?
Reason i ask is, i just played "Most 'Ospitable" and i'm about ready to lose it into a sobbing mess.:o It's so lovely and sounds like yearning.
Others? Your deep thoughts included?

Skym. I was, in fact, just listening to it right before I read this. I used to skip it back when BF first came out but now... I like revel in its sadness. I don't know if I get exactly what Karl's saying but for me its a song about having known how you're going to fuck up and doing it anyway.
Of course there's Dirty Epic too. Gives me sad chills everytime I hear it. So I was having a conundrum when I heard it live at my last UW show. Joyous day to hear it, but it gets to me.
Please Help Me from the Blue Mountain gig is my favourite. Karl's lyrics are wonderful here. Always reminds me of... umm, a sunrise? Or holidays... :)
Twist always puts me in this special mood, too.

It has to be Jumbo. Altho Steve Lamacq was playing King of Snake prior to the release of BF, which got me programmed into u/w, it was hearing Jumbo on the hmv pa in oxford which made me check out the whole album - the evening after work when I listened to Jumbo on the Virgin Records listening post was recorded in my diary Monday 1st March 1999. At that point my life changed forever - thank you rick, karl, and the 2 darrens

yes, this song does both for me. it's uplifting and sad, at the same time. i find the world the narrator/vocalist is commenting on is cold, harsh and unforgiving yet even though the deck is stacked and the outcome determined, these misfortunes and daily struggles are what truly make us feel alive and that feeling of being alive, being in touch with your emotions through hardships is the elation the narrator/vocalist is expressing...at least that's how i interpret the song. i love 8 Ball but it's not one i'll put on to get hyped to go out.

totally agree with your sentiments. in fact, a while back, i did a lil remix of 8 Ball called "AViD's dark and happy mix". You can be both.;)
i get really affected around the end when Karl's singing "today! Today!" and the melody is rising. "That bright stuff makes me feel feeeel HAPPY!"
i get so happy there i can't stop crying. Like Holden Caulfield did.:p

It's Skym for me too.
Me too. I just listened to it while out on a walk and yeah, it gets to me. 8 Ball is another fav of mine, but it definitely doesn't seem all that dark or sad to me... slightly disjointed, yes. In this case that's not a bad thing at all.
Tongue makes me melancholy in a good way. :o
To Dream To Love (i hear your voice on the other side of this glass...silence is preserved in a void)
I always thought it was "silence is preserving a voice".

good topic Holden- the one that always gets me is "Like a Swimmer". the mood of it inspired me to write my own song "Weekend Cute"

For me, it absolutely, positively has to be "Ansum".
Several songs make me melancholic, first one that comes to mind is Born Slippy Nuxx, when they play it live and every one is jumping and yelling, i always find myself wondering how many people around me really know what the song is about?
Then there's Rubber Ball, Karl sounds so sad and lostand drunk and i don't know, it really gets to me.
But the one that really touches my heart and makes me cry almost everytime, especially live, is Moaner.. "you left me alone".. (now you are looking into one of the dark corner of my soul ;))ooowwwwwwww makes me wanna howl :D
And Rez, it is so beautiful again and again, and last time they played it during the broadcast, it was for all of us, tears in my eyes :), but that's not down, just very emotional :)

i started to really resent it, because i thought the 110501 version was so much better, but eventually i let it in and it was beautiful

off the top of my baldy head:
there is a sound on the other side of this wall a bird is singing on the other side of this glass. footsteps. concealed. silence is returning a voiiiiiiiice.
not that interpretation of the words is supposed to be the subject of this thread (sorry!). this is a great tune and makes me smile but i guess the words are not so chirpy. esp on the live stuff where it goes into "you shouldn't've walked away when you walked away" etc
tunes that get to me? sola sistim i love it but it's a bit scary and sad.
Like A Swimmer

Oich Oich gets to me like no other UW song. The vocals really do it for me I think. It used to be Dirty Epic, and although that tune still gives me that "sitting on the edge of the world" type feeling, Oich Oich cuts me deep in a "looking back at the past" kind of way...if any of that makes any sense.
A lot of the tracks on Pearl's girl have that melancholy edge IMO...
And I think it's "Silence is preserving a voice."

I picked up Beaucoup Fish in LA the day it came out and then drove across the USA listening to it. I love cups and a result and it always reminds me of that trip when I hear it.
The Rez version from Reading 96 also gets me because it was the first night after our nipper was born that me and the missus got out to a gig.
At the moment I'm barely able to stop listening to I'm a Big Sister - those opening chords and timestretched voice sound wonderful.
I love the way Rick plays with chords - from Cups to King Of Snake, Biro The Leggy, the chorus of Like a Swimmer, Jumbo, Twist, Deep Arch, Small conker and a Twix, Rod Stewart and the Architecture For The Blind Mix from Lemonworld 15/12/05 all make the hairs stand up for me....

just about every uw song affects me one way or the other. amdist karls unique way of expressing himself, there's always something to either smile, laugh, scream, jump, and even cry over.
of any uw song that hits me the deepest everytime, i would have to choose sola sistim:
my favourite line -
"my insecurities, my devious nature, make it go away" :(
"beautiful, broken, my crystal fingers, beautiful, broken, my crystal fingers"
another is dirty epic:
"and i feel so shaken in my faith":(
"and the light it blinds my eyes"
"well i got phone sex to see me through the emptiness in my 501's"
... how could one not have bittersweet feelings while listening to this track... i think I'm going to listen to it now after I listen to pray and sola sistim.
also pray:
"pray for me... as you do for peace... in a world of aggression..."
"millions cry around the world, but I cry in your back garden":(
"please pray for me and i'll pray for yoouuuuuu, well it's not revolutioooon, but it's something, something we can dooooooooo.... pray, aaaaaallllllll daaaaaaaayyyyyy"
great stuff. there's quite a few songs that get to me too:
skym
please help me
born slippy .NUXX (if played at the right moment)
most o'spitable
to dream of love
simple distinctive (floating world)
two months off (it gets me behind the ears)
deep arch
puppies... and the list could go on forever...

Yes, it could... I forgot Stagger. I think it makes me sad becuase it's the end of the album, but it's pretty dark with a nice groove.
And that's a good combo. :)

firstly, hi again all! I've not been on in a few.
secondly; the UW song that always gets to me a bit is def. dirty epic, the lyrics and the feel of the song just get me everytime...
also "cherry pie" - something about that song, it's rising bass line, the overall feel of it, it just really makes me think about life, everything going on around me.
love those songs...
