i haven't ever listened for it before, but does underworld do this at all?
like recalling a similar chord or theme somewhere before in the album but not in the same song.

ie: genesis' (holden, stimpee ;) ) 1976 album, wind and wuthering, contains many repeated themes all throughout the album, ie:
-'wot gorilla?' contains a reprisal of the instrumental from 'one for the vine'
- the end of 'all in a mouse's night' contains a reprisal of 'eleventh earl of mar'
-right before the time signature change in ...in that quiet earth' contains a different reprisal of 'eleventh earl of mar'
-afterglow, at the very end fade out, there is a reprisal of 'all in a mouse's night'.

if you've heard it, or have this album, i suppose you can listen for it and see what i'm talking about, but if you don't, you'll just have to guess on my description.

has underworld done this before on the same album? i know that rez contains a reprisal of cowgirl, but it doesn't really work since it's on a single. :/
push downstairs is a reprisal of push upstairs, i think that's one.
can anyone else think of any others?

I dunno, I've always felt a kind of unity exists in each of their albums. The piano notes in both Push Upstairs and King of Snake, for example.

A Hundred Days Off also has a distinct sound carried through the first half of the album, particularly with the percussion. It's hard to pin point, but it's clear to me that a lot of thought goes into the arrangement in their albums to reward those who listen to the whole thing in one sitting.

Ansum and Little Speaker....but that's a single/album cross reprise as well.

There are lots of different elements that are 'the same'...

Spoon Deep and Surfboy
Big Mouth and Dark & Long
Rez and Cowgirl
Dark Hard and Juanita
Cherry Pie / Rowla
Confusion (End drum sequence) and Juanita (Start drum sequence)
Dobropet (intro) and 8 Ball
Ansum and Little Speaker

Oh yeah, and although the core elements are not the same, i think that You Do Scribble reminds me of Deep Arch :)

Any More?

Dark & Long also has elements of The Hump. The animal sound is the same.

It's true! Similar chords and synchopation!

As for running musical themes through a single given album, i think the closest UW came to this was on Beaucoup Fish with Push Upstairs and Push Downstairs. Maybe some of the sounds in Cups opening remind me of Winjer or Skym, but though Pete Tong once said Underworld is an "album" band that takes you on a journey, i think the musical elements are usually really diverse from song to song...no need to recall or reprise pieces of dance music!
